The Vatican website you need depends on what you want to do, because the Vatican is not run from one web address. The museums publish their own site, St. Peter’s Basilica publishes another, and the city-state has its own official pages. Visitors who type “Vatican website” are usually trying to find the right one for hours, tickets or a booking. This page maps the official sites to the jobs they do and shows how to avoid copies that charge more.
I write this as an independent guide, not the official ticket office. Every fact is linked to the official page it comes from, and the figures were the latest published as of November 2026. If you would rather compare options than read each site, you can book Vatican tickets online through the choices on the homepage.
What Is the Vatican Website?
Vatican website pages are really a group of official sites, each built for its own purpose. The pillar page on the Vatican explains the state itself, and this page explains the sites that serve visitors.
Wikipedia describes Vatican City as a landlocked sovereign city-state and an enclave within Rome, ruled by the pope. It adds that the state includes St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums. Wikidata lists vaticanstate.va, in more than one language, as an official website of the state.
So the Vatican website for a traveler is really two sites: one for the museums and one for the basilica. The state’s own site covers government and administration, which most visitors do not need.
“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”
My hub on about Vatican City collects the background pages if you want to read more about the state itself.
Vatican Website Facts and Figures: The Numbers Behind the State
Vatican website facts and figures below are taken from Wikidata and show why the sites are separate and how the web address looks:
Book aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36
- Area: 0.44 km². The state is tiny, so each sight sits close to the next.
- Founded: 11 February 1929, the date of the Lateran Treaty. The state’s own site is about this government, not about visiting.
- Population: 949 in 2024. Very few people live there, which is why visitor services run through dedicated sites.
- Heritage status: World Heritage Site. Expect strict rules and security at every entrance.
- Currency: the euro. Official prices are in euros, so I convert them below.
- Official languages: Italian and Latin. English versions of the visitor sites exist, but the state uses these two.
- Internet domain: .va. A Vatican address ends in .va, which is a quick first check against look-alike sites.

Which Vatican Website Do You Need?
Which Vatican website you need comes down to a simple split: the museums’ site covers the museums and the chapel, and the basilica’s site covers the church, the dome and the tombs. The table sums up the split using what each official site lists.
| You want to | Official site | What it offers |
|---|---|---|
| Visit the museums and the Sistine Chapel | museivaticani.va | Hours, prices, collections, ticket portal |
| Buy museum tickets online | tickets.museivaticani.va | The only official online ticket site |
| Visit St. Peter’s Basilica | basilicasanpietro.va | Visit information, digital audio guide, bookings |
| Book the necropolis, Treasury Museum or a guided tour | The basilica’s booking pages | Reservations for each extra |
| Read about the state | vaticanstate.va | Official pages of Vatican City |
If you want the English version, my guides on the Vatican website in English and the official Vatican website explain how to find it and what you will see.
What Does the Vatican Museums Website Offer?
Vatican Museums website pages give you the opening hours, the prices and the collections, plus a link to the ticket portal. The homepage is titled “Welcome to the official site of the Vatican Museums” and is organized into the Pope’s Museums, Collections, Organise your visit, and Events and News.
It also shows whether the museums are open or closed at that moment, with a link to opening hours and temporary closures. The collections menu lists museums from the Gregorian Egyptian Museum to the Pinacoteca, plus the Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Rooms.
My pages on the Vatican Museum website and the Vatican museum official website go through that site in more depth, and the one on the Vatican City official website covers the wider set.

Hours on the museums’ site
Museums’ site hours appear on the hours page, which lists Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm with final entry at 6:00 pm. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time.
On the last Sunday of the month the museums open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm with final entry at 12:30 pm and free entry. Other Sundays are closed. Fixed closures include 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December.
Temporary closures appear there too. At the time of writing the Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on 4 and 18 December, so check the page for your date.

What Prices Does the Vatican Website List?
Vatican website prices show a full entry ticket at 20.00 euros (about $22.33) and a reduced ticket at 10.00 euros (about $11.17) without online booking, using the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. A “Skip the Line” booking on the official site adds a charge to the reduced categories, 5.00 euros (about $5.58) for the reduced and student tickets and 2.00 euros (about $2.23) for school tickets.
The prices page also lists a 12.00 euro (about $13.40) full ticket for the Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo. It does not list a fee for the full museum ticket, so check the portal for the total.
It states that the entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel solely on the day it is issued, and that tickets cannot be refunded. Free entry applies on the last Sunday of the month, to children below the age of 7, to certain heritage professionals and to visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent.
For ticket-buying steps, my guides on the Vatican tickets website and the Vatican City website tickets explain what to expect at checkout.
What Does the St. Peter’s Basilica Website Offer?
St. Peter’s Basilica website pages offer visit information and a booking section. The official basilica website invites you to book your visit with the digital audio guide and announces a new welcome area.
Its “Book your visit” section lists several official services:
- The Treasury Museum, with a renewed itinerary through sacred artworks and liturgical furnishings.
- The Necropolis, under the central nave, with ancient Roman and early Christian tombs and the path to Saint Peter’s tomb.
- Guided tours of St. Peter’s Basilica.
- A visit to the basilica with the digital audio guide.
The church itself does not need a booking. One reviewer on the basilica’s Maps listing calls the visit free, says you pass security and the main doors, and says you can see most of it in 40 minutes. The listing shows the basilica open from 7 am to 7:10 pm daily.
“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

How Do You Spot a Fake Vatican Website?
Spotting a fake Vatican website starts with comparing the address to the official portal and being wary of anything similar. The museums’ prices page warns of potential scams and websites that use domains similar to the official one, which may charge significantly higher prices.
It names https://tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for purchasing tickets online and advises always checking that you are using the official portal. A few habits help:
- Type the address yourself or use a link from the official site, not from an advertisement.
- Read the full web address before you enter card details.
- Compare the total with the official prices page.
- Remember that tickets cannot be refunded.
A third-party seller is not necessarily a fake. A reseller can be legitimate if it states what it sells, and many bundle the museum ticket with extras. The key is to know which kind of site you are on.

What Does the Vatican Website Tell You About the State?
Vatican website for the state pages cover government rather than tickets. Wikipedia says Vatican City is governed by the Holy See and is an absolute monarchy under the pope, who delegates authority to the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.
It gives an area of 0.49 square kilometres and a population of about 882, making it the smallest country by area and the least populous. The modern state was established by the Lateran Treaty, signed on 11 February 1929, and it uses the euro and issues its own euro coins.
None of that changes how you buy a ticket, but it explains why the sites are separate. Each body that runs a sight publishes its own hours and booking pages, so no one address covers the museums, the church and the state.
Which Parts of the Vatican Need No Booking?
Parts of the Vatican that need no booking include the ordinary basilica visit, which asks only for a security check. For everything else, the official sites ask you to plan ahead, and the museums’ ticket is valid only on the day it is issued.
The Maps data lists the basilica’s hours, and the reviewer quoted above suggests an early arrival. If you only want the church, you can skip the ticket sites and walk in, then use the museums’ site separately for a different day.

What Language and Format Should You Expect?
Vatican website language and format are easy to handle, since the official visitor pages come in English and both the museums’ site and the basilica’s site show English versions. Some pages are easier to read than others, because tables of closures and temporary closures are dense and dates change often.
When you use the Vatican website for a trip, read the page top to bottom for your date rather than relying on a summary. Look for the notice boxes, such as the warning about look-alike domains on the prices page, and for the status line that says whether the museums are open at that moment. Save the pages you rely on, in case you need them on the day.
Should You Buy From the Vatican Website or a Reseller?
Buying from the Vatican website suits you when you want the plain ticket, while a reseller fits better if you want a bundle, a guide or a host. The official site sells the entry ticket, while resellers add services.
One entry listing includes skip-the-ticket-line entry, a booking fee and an audio guide if that option is selected, and it excludes a guided tour, a basilica ticket and the dome. Another includes a host who meets you at an office and escorts you to the museum entrance, and its exclusion is a tour guide.

A traveler on the first listing wrote that it was value for money and really helpful. Another traveler who could not do a guided tour because their child uses a wheelchair used an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.
“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
If you want a guide and the basilica in one outing, the guided listings add them. One includes skip-the-line access to the museums and the chapel, with the basilica if that option is selected. Another includes a licensed guide and headsets, with pre-reserved dome access on select options, and a third offers optional direct entry to the basilica.

Is the Vatican Website Enough to Plan a Trip?
The Vatican website covers hours, prices and bookings, yet it does not compare your options or show how to combine them. A day plan needs more: where to meet, how long to allow and how to link the museums and the basilica.
The listings are practical on this. One warns that St. Peter’s Square is not its meeting point, another tells you to scan your ticket at the online and groups box office after security, and another asks you to redeem your ticket at a street address 15 minutes early. Read your voucher before you go.
The official sites also leave questions about queues and timing that reviews fill in. One reviewer of the basilica says there was already a line at 6:45 am but they got in quickly, which is a single data point and not a rule.
Planning With the Vatican Website
Planning with the Vatican website begins at the museums’ hours page for your date; then decide whether you want the basilica too, and then choose between the official portal and a reseller. Keep the basilica’s extras as a separate plan.
A short checklist:
- Check the museums’ hours and closures for your date.
- Decide whether you need the basilica’s necropolis or a guided tour.
- Buy only through the official portal or a seller whose inclusions you have read.
- Compare totals, including any booking fee.
- Keep your voucher and QR codes ready on your phone.
Whichever route you choose, treat the Vatican website as the final word on hours, prices and rules, and use the homepage to compare the options side by side.
