Entrance tickets to Vatican Museu Ms is a typo for what most people want: entrance tickets to the Vatican Museums, the gallery complex that holds the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms. I’ll treat it that way in this guide. The official full ticket costs EUR 20.00 without online booking, and the ticket is valid only on the day it is issued.

The tricky part is not the price. It is picking the right way to buy, the right day and the right entrance. My job here is to take those three decisions off your plate, so you arrive with the correct ticket and a realistic plan.

Vatican Museums Entrance Tickets Explained

Vatican Museums entrance tickets let you walk through the museum halls and into the Sistine Chapel. According to the official prices page, it entitles you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel solely on the day the ticket is issued. It does not cover St. Peter’s Basilica, which has its own entrance and its own rules.

Think of your options as three layers. The base layer is the official ticket. The second layer is a reseller’s skip-the-line ticket, which adds a timed slot and sometimes a host or audio guide. The third layer is a guided tour, where a person leads you through the highlights and the ticket is bundled in.

If you want a quick side-by-side of all of them, I’d start with where to buy Vatican tickets? and then come back here for the Museums-specific details. For the full picture of this exact attraction, my Vatican Museum tickets guide is the main reference, and the tickets hub lists every ticket question I cover.

What Are the Official Prices for Each Ticket Type?

Official Vatican Museums ticket prices are EUR 20.00 for the full ticket and EUR 10.00 for the reduced one, both quoted by the Museums for visits without online booking. At the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (1 euro = 1.1165 US dollars, from the European Central Bank), that is about $22.33 and $11.17.

The official page also lists the skip-the-line booking for reduced tickets: EUR 10.00 plus EUR 5.00 when you reserve on the official Vatican Museums website. That extra EUR 5.00 is about $5.58. The excerpt I have does not state the online price for the full ticket, so I won’t guess it. Open the official prices page for the current number before you pay.

Ticket Official price About in USD
Full entry (no online booking) EUR 20.00 $22.33
Reduced entry (no online booking) EUR 10.00 $11.17
Reduced with official skip-the-line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 $11.17 + $5.58
Students (no online booking) EUR 10.00 $11.17
Schools (no online booking) EUR 5.00 $5.58
Castel Gandolfo Papal Palace and Secret Garden EUR 12.00 $13.40

Prices and conditions change, so use this table as a planning guide and confirm on the official site. Tickets cannot be refunded, which is the rule I would remember most before clicking pay.

When you see entrance tickets to Vatican Museu Ms listed at a much higher price, you are almost always looking at a reseller bundle. Those can be fair value when they add a host, an audio guide or a guide, but compare what is included first. If you want the cost breakdown on its own, my page on what Vatican entrance tickets cost goes through it line by line.

Where Do You Buy Entrance Tickets Safely?

Buying entrance tickets safely means using the official portal, tickets.museivaticani.va, or a reseller whose ticket clearly names the Vatican Museums. The Museums themselves say that portal is the only official site for buying tickets online and warn about sites with similar domains that may charge significantly higher prices.

That warning matters. Lookalike websites are the main way visitors overpay for entrance tickets to Vatican Museu Ms, because the typo and near-miss domains pull people to the wrong page. My rule is simple: if the page does not say “museivaticani.va” in the address bar, treat it as a reseller and read the inclusions before paying.

A reseller is not the same as a scam. Marketplaces sell timed entry with a booking fee, and the tour listings below show exactly what is bundled. Just never think of a reseller as the official ticket office, and never pay a stranger on the street who says he can “get you in.”

Official ticket or reseller ticket?

The official ticket is my pick when the slot you want is available and you only need the Museums. I’d pick a reseller when the official slots are gone, or when you want a host who walks you to the entrance, or an audio guide ready at a dedicated desk. For a plain comparison of the two routes, see my page on official Vatican entrance tickets.

What Is Included in a Vatican Museums Ticket?

A Vatican Museums ticket includes the galleries and the Sistine Chapel on the day of issue, nothing more. It does not include a guided tour, and it does not include St. Peter’s Basilica or its dome, which is why some visitors are surprised at the end of the day.

The tour data in my research shows how resellers differ. One entrance ticket lists skip-the-ticket-line entry, an optional audio guide and a booking fee, while excluding a guided tour and the Basilica dome. Another includes a host at the meeting point and the reservation fee, but notes that the guided tour is only added if you select it.

Here is how I read the difference between the common formats:

  • Entry only: you walk in at your slot and explore alone. Cheapest, most flexible.
  • Entry plus host: a person meets you near the entrance and helps you through check-in, then leaves you on your own.
  • Entry plus audio guide: same as entry only, with a device to explain the art.
  • Guided tour: an expert guide leads a small group, and the Basilica is sometimes included.

Read the exclusions line on every listing. It tells you more than the headline does.

If you want a plain timed ticket, the first two tours above are the formats I’d compare. Both are entry tickets rather than guided tours, and both are rated by thousands of travelers. For a wider look at the whole topic, I keep a page on entrance tickets to the Vatican Museums covering the same ground from the single-ticket angle.

Which Entrance Do You Use and Where Do You Go?

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, and the Maps listing gives the address as Viale Vaticano, 100, 00192 Roma. Reseller tickets also point you to a dedicated entrance there, then to a ticket scan point called CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after the security check.

You can see both places on the map below. One reviewer on Google Maps said their advice was to arrive 30 minutes before opening to avoid big queues. I’d treat that as one traveler’s tip, not a promise, but arriving early is sensible any day.

Do not mix up the Museums entrance with the St. Peter’s Square entrance. They are on opposite sides of the walls, and walking between them takes real time. Plan your slot with that walk in mind, and keep the voucher or mobile ticket ready before you reach security.

If a reseller tells you to meet at an office first, believe the voucher. One listing meets at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, another at a flower stand on Via Giulio Cesare and Via Leone IV, and a third at an office on Via Santamaura 14B. Those are provider-specific, and being late can void the booking.

When Are the Vatican Museums Open, and When Is Entry Free?

The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., according to the official opening hours page. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time, so the real visiting window ends around 7:30 p.m.

Entry is free on the last Sunday of each month, when the Museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. That free day does not apply when it coincides with Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December. The prices page also lists free entry for children under 7 and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent.

My advice: the free Sunday looks like a bargain, but you trade money for crowds and a short five-hour window. If your trip allows it, I’d pay for a weekday slot and enjoy the Sistine Chapel with more space.

Closure dates to write down

Vatican Museums closure dates include every Sunday except the last of the month, plus these days: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. There are also short temporary closures; for example, the Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 p.m. on 4 December and 18 December, and all sectors close from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November. Always confirm on the official calendar, since it changes.

Are Skip-the-Line Entrance Tickets Worth It?

Skip-the-line entrance tickets are worth it if you value your time and are visiting in a busy season, because a timed slot replaces the open-ended ticket queue. One traveler reviewing a reseller ticket wrote that they skipped the line “like we were in the club when we were 20,” which tells you how many people felt the benefit.

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”
Keri, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket

The caveat is that skip-the-line applies to the ticket purchase queue and entry, not to the security check or to crowds inside the galleries. Some travelers in the review summaries say clearer information on actual entry times and remaining queues would help, so I’d treat a booked slot as a way to shorten the wait, not erase it. One Maps reviewer who bought a ticket on the spot at about 5:00 p.m. waited 30 to 40 minutes and then rushed the galleries before closing, which is exactly the scenario a booked slot avoids.

My recommendation is to book a timed slot a few days ahead when you can, since slots fill up. If you are comparing early options, my page on early entrance tickets explains what the earliest entry gets you and how it differs from a normal slot.

Which Ticket or Tour Should You Pick?

Choosing a ticket or tour comes down to style: a plain entry ticket if you want to explore alone, an entry ticket with a host if you want help at the door, and a small-group tour if you want the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s explained by an expert. The tours below show the range, from entry-only to guided early access.

Here is how I’d choose between them, using only what the listings state:

  1. Entry-only ticket, around $36 to $53 in the data: best for people who like to wander at their own pace and don’t mind reading wall labels.
  2. Early-entry small group, around $121: a guided visit with earliest available entrance and direct access from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter’s Basilica without waiting in line, according to its listing.
  3. Small-group guided tour, around $128: a three-hour tour with a guide, with skip-the-line entry to the Basilica noted as not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours ahead.

I would not book a guided tour just for the ticket. I’d book it for the context, because the Museums are enormous and a guide decides which rooms matter. Whichever format you pick, read the meeting-point instructions twice, since late arrivals are often non-refundable.

If this still feels like a lot of options, the Vatican ticket types side by side page on the homepage is where I’d go to compare them in one place.

What About the Excavations Ticket?

The Excavations ticket covers the Scavi, the underground excavations beneath St. Peter’s, and comes with a separate office. The Excavations Office page lists the individual ticket at EUR 13.00, about $14.51 at the ECB rate, including the contribution for the guide, and it says no reductions are given for any reason.

The Scavi office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is not part of the Vatican Museums ticket, so don’t assume your Museums booking covers it. Reservations go through the Scavi website, not the Museums portal.

Related searches often mix the two together, so remember the rule: Museums tickets are for the galleries and the Sistine Chapel, and Scavi tickets are for the excavations only.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City’s key figures help explain why entrance tickets matter here. All of them come from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The state is tiny, so the Museums, the Basilica and the Square sit close together. That is why you can plan a single day around them.
  • Inception: 1929-02-11. The modern state dates from the Lateran Treaty, which fits the city’s long layering of papal history.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. Protection rules shape visitor flow and security.
  • Population: 949 (2024). The visitors vastly outnumber the residents on a busy day.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, which is why I quote EUR prices first.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope is the head of state, which explains the occasional closures for papal events.

The Wikipedia article on Vatican City adds that the state is a de facto member of the Schengen Area and that its sites include St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

Planning Your Visit With the Right Entrance Ticket

Planning your visit to the Museums comes down to a short piece of advice on entrance tickets to Vatican Museu Ms. Book a timed slot on the official portal or from a reseller whose listing you have read, confirm prices and closures on the Museums’ own pages, and arrive before your slot with your voucher open.

For a wider view of the options, the Vatican entrance tickets page covers the whole attraction rather than only the Museums, and the tickets hub links to the rest of my planning guides.

Checklist before you go:

  • Check the official calendar for your date, and avoid Sundays unless it is the free last Sunday.
  • Remember that tickets are not refundable, so choose your date carefully.
  • Keep your voucher or mobile ticket ready for security.
  • Decide in advance whether you want the Basilica, since the entry ticket does not include it.
  • Leave the halls before closing time, 30 minutes before the Museums shut.

If you want a ticket that is already bundled with entry and a clear meeting point, the tours above are where I’d start. I’m an independent guide, not the official ticket office, so always double-check the details on the Museums’ own website.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican Museums?

The official full entry ticket is EUR 20.00 without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. The reduced ticket is EUR 10.00, and the skip-the-line booking on the official site adds a fee for reduced tickets. Check the official prices page before you pay, because prices change.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays, because the Museums are closed except on the last Sunday of the month, and avoid the listed holiday closures such as 1 and 6 January, 1 May and 8, 25 and 26 December. The last Sunday is free, so it is also the busiest. Weekday mornings are the calmer choice.

Can you walk from Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

Some guided tours offer direct access from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica without waiting in line. A standard Museums-only ticket does not include the Basilica, so check what your ticket covers. St. Peter's Basilica is open daily on its own schedule.

What is included in a Vatican Museums ticket?

The official entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. Tickets cannot be refunded. Guided tours, audio guides and St. Peter's Basilica dome access are separate.

Is there a time I must leave the Vatican Museums?

Yes. The Museums close at 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, final entry is 6:00 p.m., and visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time.
