Official Vatican Tours

By Updated 12 min read

Official Vatican tours are the entry tickets and guided visits sold through the Vatican's own websites, while partner tours are run by licensed operators who sell through marketplaces. The Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for online tickets, so start there and compare guided options second.

Official Vatican tours means two different things, and mixing them up is the most common planning mistake I see. One is the entry ticket sold by the Vatican itself. The other is a guided visit sold by a licensed partner company that uses the same galleries. Both are legitimate, but only one of them is the Vatican’s own shop.

This page sorts out which is which, what the official tickets cost, and where a partner tour earns its price. If you want the full ticket picture first, my guide to Vatican Museum tickets covers every ticket type in detail.

What Are Official Vatican Tours?

Official Vatican tours are visits you book through websites that the Vatican itself operates. The Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as the sole official site for online tickets, and they warn that look-alike domains may charge far higher prices.

That one sentence is the key. When someone says “official,” they usually mean one of three things:

  • The Vatican Museums ticket portal, which sells entry to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
  • The St. Peter’s Basilica website, which sells guided tours, a digital audio guide, the Treasury Museum and the Necropolis.
  • A partner tour, which is run by a private operator with its own guides and its own meeting point, and is sold on a marketplace.

I treat the first two as official. The third is a separate product, and I explain it below so you can decide with clear eyes.

Official Vatican Tour Options at a Glance

Official Vatican tour options vary by site, because the Vatican runs more than one and each sells something different. The list below shows what each official source offers, as described on the pages themselves.

Visitors queuing at the entrance of the Vatican Museums for official Vatican toursBook aheadVatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica TourCheck availability · from $60
  • Vatican Museums portal: entry to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with optional skip-the-line booking. Best for self-guided visits at your own pace.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica site: guided tours of the Basilica, the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and a digital audio guide. Best for anyone focused on the church itself.
  • Partner tours (marketplace): guided group tours with a licensed guide and a set meeting point. Best for visitors who want a human guide and one booking.

If you only want to see the art and you are happy to read the labels or use an audio guide, the Museums portal is enough. If a story-driven visit matters more, the partner tours below are where most visitors end up.

Where Can You Book Official Vatican Tours Safely?

Official Vatican tours are safest to book on tickets.museivaticani.va for Museums entry and on basilicasanpietro.va for Basilica services. The Museums page cautions that look-alike domains can charge significantly higher prices, and it advises confirming you are on the official portal before paying.

Here is my simple safety routine:

  1. Start from the Vatican Museums prices and tickets page and follow its own ticket link.
  2. Read the address bar before entering card details.
  3. Keep your confirmation until you are through security.

If you prefer a guided visit from a partner company, buy from a marketplace you trust and read the meeting point carefully. Several partner tours start at their own office, not at the Vatican gate, and that detail trips people up. My page on booking through the official site walks through that decision step by step.

I am an independent guide, not the ticket office. Online Vatican Tickets helps you compare options, and the Vatican sells the official tickets.

How Much Do Official Vatican Tickets Cost?

Official Vatican tickets cost EUR 20 for a full Vatican Museums ticket without online booking, which is about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. A reduced ticket runs EUR 10 without online booking, or EUR 10 plus EUR 5 when you add the “Skip the Line” booking on the official site.

The official page lists these prices, and I have added dollar figures using the ECB reference rates (1 EUR = 1.1165 USD).

Ticket Price without online booking With “Skip the Line” booking
Full entry EUR 20.00 (about $22) Not listed on the page I used
Reduced entry EUR 10.00 (about $11) EUR 10.00 + 5.00 (about $17 in total)
Students EUR 10.00 (about $11) EUR 10.00 + 5.00 (about $17 in total)
Schools EUR 5.00 (about $6) EUR 5.00 + 2.00 (about $8 in total)
Castle Gandolfo papal palace EUR 12.00 (about $13) Not listed

Source: official Vatican Museums prices. Prices change, so confirm them on the official page before you book.

Three rules from the same page matter more than the prices:

  • The ticket is valid for the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day it is issued.
  • Tickets cannot be refunded.
  • Free entry exists for the last Sunday of the month (subject to the museums’ calendar), children under 7, and certain visitors with a certified disability of at least 67%.

Free entry on the last Sunday sounds great, but I would not plan a first visit around it. A free day draws the biggest crowds, so a timed ticket on a normal weekday is usually the calmer way to see the Sistine Chapel.

Are Partner Tours the Same as Official Vatican Tours?

Partner tours are not the same as official Vatican tours: each is a separate product from a private company, even when it uses the Vatican’s own entrances. The listings I reviewed mention things like a “Vatican Partner Entrance,” a licensed guide, headsets and a company meeting point, and none of those is the Vatican’s own service.

That is not a reason to avoid them. It just means you should read the listing for what is actually promised. Here are the differences I would check on any listing:

  • Who is the guide? Some listings say the guide is a licensed professional. One lists “an official Vatican guide” in its title, so read what that wording covers before you book.
  • Where do you meet? Some tours meet outside the Museums, one meets inside under a “VISITE GUIDATE” sign, and others meet at a company office nearby.
  • Is St. Peter’s Basilica included? Several tours say the Basilica is optional, or not accessible on Wednesday mornings. A tour can include it, exclude it, or sell it as an upgrade.

Those points decide whether the price you see is the full price of your day. I cover the overlap with other official-style listings in Vatican city tours official website.

This is where official Vatican tour tickets come in: they are the entry-only route, without a guide.

Official Vatican Guided Tours Versus Self-Guided Visits

Official Vatican guided tours hand you a story and a route, while a self-guided ticket hands you freedom and a lower price. Neither wins in the abstract, so I match each one to the visitor.

I would choose a guided tour if:

  • it is your first time and the Museums feel overwhelming;
  • you want the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel explained in context;
  • you would rather have one booking and a fixed meeting point.

I would choose a self-guided visit if:

  • you want to linger in a few galleries and skip the rest;
  • you already know what you want to see;
  • you are on a tight budget.

Reviewers say much the same. One traveler wrote that a guided tour was “the best way to see the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museums”:

“This was the best way to see the Sistine Chapel and Vatican museums. So you don’t meet your guide outside…. You meet your guide inside under the guided tour sign. The tickets help you to skip the line, but you do need to ask where that line is. And the time frame is flexible.”
Amber, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums Tour with Official Vatican Guide

Another reviewer, who could not take a guided route because of a family member’s wheelchair, still enjoyed the self-guided option with an audio guide:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

Both points are fair. Guides add depth, and an audio guide adds flexibility. Check each listing for accessibility details, because one of the tours I reviewed lists a wheelchair-accessible route as not included.

Which Official Vatican Tour Should You Pick?

The best official Vatican tour for most first-time visitors is a small-group guided visit to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, with the Basilica added only if you want it that day. I would compare the tours below first, and they differ mainly in price, group size and inclusions.

Here is how I read them:

  • The official-guide tour is the cheapest guided option in my set, at about $52. It includes the Museums ticket and a guided tour, and it does not include the Basilica.
  • The City Wonders tour offers a choice between an intimate 10-person group and a standard 20-person group. It includes the Sistine Chapel and, unless you pick a “No Basilica” option, St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • The Crown Tours option lets you upgrade to Basilica access and a dome visit with an elevator, with a licensed guide and audio headsets.

If you would rather skip a guide, these entry-only tours and combined options are worth a look:

The first of these is an entry ticket with a dedicated GetYourGuide entrance and an optional audio guide. The others are guided and bundle skip-the-line access with the Basilica. My advice is to book whichever one fits your date first, because the price gap between them matters less than losing your preferred time slot. If you want a wider choice, the Vatican city tour guide compares more formats.

Can You Get Into St. Peter’s Basilica With These Tours?

St. Peter’s Basilica access depends on the tour you pick: the Basilica is a separate site with its own official website, and some guided tours include it while others do not. Read each listing for the Basilica line before you pay.

On the Basilica’s official site you can book guided tours of the Basilica, the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis under the central nave, and a digital audio guide. The Necropolis description mentions ancient Roman and early Christian tombs and the path toward St. Peter’s tomb.

One reviewer’s tip stuck with me for planning. They arrived at the Basilica early, found a line, and still got in quickly:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That matches the opening hours in the Maps listing, which shows the Basilica open from 7 am to 7:10 pm every day. Always confirm times on the official site, because services and closures change.

Official Vatican Tours by the Numbers

Official Vatican tours take place inside a tiny city-state, and a few figures explain why a visit is so compact. The numbers below come from Wikidata.

  • Area: 0.44 km². That is why the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica sit within a short walk, though the Museums exit and the Basilica are not directly linked on foot.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, the date the modern city-state was established.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Almost everyone you meet inside is a visitor.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which helps explain the strict visit rules.
  • Currency: euro, so official prices are quoted in EUR.
  • Languages: Italian and Latin are official, so expect signs in Italian first.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV, listed as head of state.

Background reading on the city-state is on Wikipedia, which describes it as a landlocked sovereign city-state enclaved in Rome.

Where Do Official Vatican Tours Start?

Official Vatican tours start near the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano for most guided visits, but each operator sets its own meeting point. One tour I looked at gathers on the steps across from the entrance and places them right next to Caffè Vaticano, on the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.

Other operators meet in different places, so open your confirmation and read the instructions. One meets at an office on Via Mocenigo, about two minutes from the Museums. Another meets in Borgo Pio, near St. Peter’s Square, and asks you to arrive 20 minutes before the start.

The places below show where the main sights are.

Final Tips for Booking Official Vatican Tours

Booking official Vatican tours goes best when you first decide whether you want a guide, then reserve the matching option on a trusted site and hold on to your time slot. A few habits make the day smoother.

  1. Choose your date before you pay. Tickets are non-refundable on the official portal.
  2. Read the meeting point twice. It changes by operator.
  3. Check what is included. The Basilica, headsets and the dome often depend on the option you pick.
  4. Confirm prices on the official page. They can change.
  5. Plan the walk. If you visit both the Museums and the Basilica on one day, build in time to walk between them.

For the full range of ticket types, the Vatican tickets topic hub lists every guide on this site. When you are ready to compare options side by side, Online Vatican Tickets is where I keep them together. And if you are still deciding between a guide and a self-guided visit, remember that official Vatican tours work best when you match them to how you like to travel.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tour Vatican City on your own?

Yes. A standard Vatican Museums ticket lets you walk the Museums and the Sistine Chapel without a guide, on the day the ticket is issued. You can add an audio guide or choose a guided option if you want the stories behind the art.

Which Vatican tour should I pick?

Pick by what you want to see and how you like to learn. A guided Museums and Sistine Chapel tour suits first-time visitors, a Basilica add-on suits anyone who also wants St. Peter's, and a self-guided entry ticket suits people who prefer their own pace.

Is the Vatican free on the last Sunday of the month?

The Vatican Museums list free entry on the last Sunday of the month, subject to their calendar of openings and closures. Check that calendar before you plan around it, because the free day is also the busiest.

Are Vatican Museums tickets refundable?

No. The official ticket page states that tickets cannot be refunded, and that the ticket is valid for the day of issue only. Choose your date carefully before you pay.

Who gets reduced-price Vatican Museums tickets?

The official page lists reduced tickets for students, schools and pilgrimage groups. Pilgrimage groups need a letter from their parish, institute or diocese, and anyone who buys a reduced ticket without the right to it must buy a new full-price one.

Is there a different official site for St. Peter's Basilica?

Yes. St. Peter's Basilica runs its own official website, with a digital audio guide and bookable guided tours, the Treasury Museum and the Necropolis. It is separate from the Vatican Museums ticket portal.
