Vatican Houses

By Updated 11 min read

Vatican houses are not a property market: Vatican City covers only 0.44 km², and visitors cannot rent or buy a home inside it. If you want to sleep near the Vatican, book a hotel or guest house just outside the border in Rome.

Vatican houses are not something you can shop for. The Vatican is a sovereign city-state of just 0.44 km², and it has no open housing market for visitors or foreign buyers. If you searched for Vatican houses to rent, buy or tour, this guide sorts out what exists inside the walls and where you can sleep nearby.

I’ll cover who actually lives in the state, how its buildings are organized, and what to do instead. For most travelers the practical answer is a room in the streets around the Vatican, plus a timed ticket to the sights inside.

What Are Vatican Houses and Who Lives in Them?

Vatican houses means the residential and official buildings within Vatican City, an enclave inside Rome, and they exist for the state and the Catholic Church rather than for the public. Because the Vatican City State is governed by the Holy See and ruled by the pope, housing here follows the needs of the institution.

The numbers show how small this community is. Wikidata records a population of 949 in 2024, on a territory smaller than most city parks. A place of that size cannot have a neighborhood of private homes in the usual sense.

Many people confuse “Vatican houses” with the grand buildings tourists see. St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums are all part of the state, and Wikipedia lists them as the sites that make it a World Heritage Site. Those are working institutions and museums, not homes for rent.

Why does the state stay so small?

The state stays so small because of its origins: per Wikipedia, the modern state dates to 11 February 1929, when the Lateran Treaty ended the long dispute between the papacy and Italy. Before then, the pope had called himself a “prisoner in the Vatican” once Italian unification ended with the capture of Rome in 1870.

The treaty created a tiny territory around Vatican Hill rather than a large country. That history explains why the walls enclose so little space and why housing stays tied to church and state roles.

Can You Buy or Rent Vatican Houses?

Buying or renting Vatican houses is not something I would plan on, because no home inside Vatican City is open to that. The state is an absolute monarchy under the pope, and its land never reaches a public property market. A listing promising “Vatican houses for sale” almost certainly describes property in Rome, not in the sovereign state.

Vatican houses and residential buildings inside the walls of Vatican City beside St. Peter's BasilicaBook aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36

Be careful with those listings. A site that advertises a “Vatican apartment” usually means a flat in the neighborhoods near the border. That is a fair thing to rent as a traveler, but it is not a home within the city-state, and it does not come with any special access to its buildings.

Here is my rule of thumb. If a listing gives a Rome street address and a normal Italian postal code, it is a Rome rental. If it claims a Vatican City address and a purchase price, ask for proof before you send any money.

What about the Apostolic Palace?

The Apostolic Palace is one of the state’s major buildings, yet you cannot book it as a place to live. To see parts of it, my guide to Apostolic Palace tickets explains what a visitor can actually enter. The palace is covered on the Vatican City page too.

Vatican Houses by the Numbers

Vatican houses by the numbers come down to a handful of Wikidata figures that explain why the housing question has such a short answer. Every one of them comes from the Vatican City record.

  • Area: 0.44 km². There is simply no room for a residential market. You can cross the state on foot in a short time.
  • Population: 949 (2024). This is the count of people who live under the state’s authority, and it is far smaller than a single Rome district.
  • Inception: 11 February 1929. The modern city-state is less than a century old, and its borders have not grown.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. The buildings are protected cultural landmarks, which limits changes to the property.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope leads the state, which is why housing decisions belong to the church.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros here, the same as in Rome.

For a visitor, the takeaway is practical. Because the state is tiny, almost every hotel, apartment and guest house sits in Rome, and the border is a short walk away.

Where Can You Stay Near the Vatican Instead?

Staying near the Vatican works best in a hotel or guest house on the Rome side of the border. In my research, two options sit a short walk from the museum entrance, and travelers rate both on Google Maps.

The Spring House Hotel Rome Vatican, a Tapestry Collection by Hilton hotel, is on Via Mocenigo, and it holds a 4.4 rating from 1,582 reviews. The Vatican City Guest House is a bed and breakfast on Viale Giulio Cesare, with a 4.2 rating from 219 reviews.

One guest wrote that the rooms were clean and the location was fabulous, with a short walk to the Vatican and a metro stop about 30 seconds away.

“Paolo was great to work with. The rooms were clean and the location was fabulous. Short walk to the Vatican and literally 30 seconds away from a metro stop for exploring the rest of Rome. We would definitely stay there again!”
Keith · Google Maps review about Vatican City Guest House

That kind of location matters more than a fancy room. If you sleep within walking distance, you can reach the museum gate before the crowds build, and you avoid a taxi on your busiest day.

How to choose a base

  • Pick the walk first. A ten-minute walk to the entrance beats a cheaper room across the city.
  • Check the metro. A station close to your door gives you easy trips to the rest of Rome.
  • Read recent reviews. The rating alone does not tell you about noise or breakfast.
  • Confirm the address. Make sure the property is in Rome, not described loosely as “Vatican”.

What Is It Like Inside the Vatican Buildings?

The Vatican buildings most visitors enter are the museums and the basilica, and both keep a set schedule. Maps lists the Vatican Museums as open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, while St. Peter’s Basilica shows 7 am to 7:10 pm every day. Hours change, so I always send readers to the official opening hours page before they plan.

The museums are not one building but a chain of collections. The official site lists the Pio Clementino Museum, the Chiaramonti Museum, the Pinacoteca, the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s Rooms and the Borgia Apartment, among others, on the Vatican Museums website.

If you hoped to see “Vatican houses” in the sense of apartments, the Borgia Apartment is the closest thing the public can enter. It is an old papal suite now run as part of the museum route. Check the official page before you go, since some rooms close for work.

What can you see of the gardens?

The Vatican gardens are the green space inside the walls, and they help the state feel like a small town. If that appeals, read about the Vatican gardens before you book, since entry is by ticket and the rules differ from the museums.

How Do You Get Into the Vatican Houses and Museums?

Getting into the Vatican museums takes a timed ticket, which you can buy on the official site or through a booking partner. The tours below use a dedicated entrance, and I’d pick the one that fits how much guiding you want.

My advice is simple. If you like to explore alone, a skip-the-line entry ticket is enough. If you want the history of the papal buildings explained, book a guided tour instead.

Option Price (USD) Guide Best for
Museums & Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 No Independent visitors
Skip-the-line entry with host at check-in $53.48 No Easier arrival
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour $60.17 Yes History and context
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour with dome option $71.31 Yes A longer guided visit

Prices are the ones listed by the booking partner when I prepared this page, and they can change. Check the current price before you pay. If you aren’t sure which type of ticket fits, where to buy Vatican tickets? is a good place to compare every option side by side.

Do the cheaper tickets include a guide?

Cheaper Vatican tickets do not include a guide. The entrance ticket on the first row covers skip-the-line entry and an optional audio guide, but it excludes a guided tour and access to the dome. The Crown Tours option adds a licensed guide and headsets, and it lists a dome with an elevator among its select options.

Who gets a reduced price?

A reduced Vatican ticket is offered by the Vatican Museums to students up to and including 25 years of age who carry a document confirming enrollment for the current year. The official page warns that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without the right to it must buy a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is not refunded.

Can You Visit Vatican City If You Are Not Catholic?

Visiting Vatican City does not require you to be Catholic. The Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Square welcome visitors of any faith, and the same ticket rules apply to everyone. I’d treat it like any major landmark: book a time, dress for a place of worship and arrive early.

The basilica is a working church, so cover your shoulders and knees. One of the tours lists St. Peter’s Basilica as free of charge, but access is not guaranteed and may vary because of crowd control. That is worth remembering if the basilica is your main goal.

Vatican Houses and Where to Eat

Vatican houses and where to eat is a common pairing of questions, since the state has little choice of restaurants inside the walls and I can’t confirm what is sold there from the sources I use. My practical advice is to eat before you go in or plan a meal on the streets around the museum exit.

The tour meeting points help here. One provider sends you to Via Mocenigo, about two minutes from the museums, and another to Via Sebastiano Veniero, so those streets are a natural place to find a cafe before or after your time slot.

If you plan to book, here is how I’d handle a full day. Reserve a morning museum slot, break for lunch outside, and keep the afternoon for the basilica and the square.

What Do Travelers Say About Visiting?

Travelers visiting the Vatican who book a timed entry often say it saves effort. Reviews summarized by the booking partner praise the collections and say timed entry eases access, though some ask for clearer directions to the correct queue.

One visitor with a child in a wheelchair wrote that they did the tour on their own with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

That is useful for anyone with limited mobility. If you need step-free access, ask the official site about routes before you book, and choose a self-guided ticket if a group pace would not suit you.

Are Vatican Houses Worth Planning Around?

Vatican houses are worth understanding, but not worth chasing as a rental or a purchase. Honestly, the state is a small, working religious and political center, and its buildings serve that role. Your trip will gain far more from a good base in Rome and a well-timed ticket.

My advice is to book your bed and your entry slot early, since the weeks around major holidays fill up. Then use the tours below as a soft starting point, and compare them against the official ticket page.

For a broader introduction to the city-state, the Vatican guide and the About Vatican City hub cover the history and the main sights. If you want to know who leads the state today, my page on Pope Leo and the Holy See is a good next step, and the Swiss Guard page covers the uniformed guards you will see at the gates.

Final Tips Before You Book

Final tips before you book start with this: Vatican houses are a closed world, so build the trip around the sights, not the homes. Keep these points in mind as you finish planning.

  • Book your room outside the border. Choose a hotel or guest house in Rome with a short walk to the museum gate.
  • Reserve a timed ticket. The museums run on timed entry, and latecomers may lose their skip-the-line access.
  • Arrive early to your slot. One provider asks you to come 15 minutes before the start time.
  • Confirm the details. Check hours, prices and closures on the official site before you pay.
  • Dress respectfully. Plan for a place of worship when you enter the basilica.

When you are ready to pick a ticket, Online Vatican Tickets lays out the main options so you can match one to your day. We are an independent guide and not the official ticket office, so always confirm final details on the Vatican Museums site.

Frequently asked questions

How many residents live in Vatican?

Wikidata lists a population of 949 for Vatican City in 2024. The state covers only 0.44 km², so it is the smallest country by area and the least populous.

Can I stay at the Vatican overnight?

Not as a regular visitor. I'd book a hotel or guest house just outside the border in Rome, such as The Spring House Hotel Rome Vatican on Via Mocenigo or the Vatican City Guest House on Viale Giulio Cesare.

Can a Hindu visit Vatican City?

Yes. Visitors do not need to be Catholic to enter the Vatican Museums or St. Peter's Square. Any visitor can buy a museum ticket on the official site or book a skip-the-line entry through a tour provider.

Has a baby been born in Vatican City?

The brief I work from has no sourced answer on births inside the state, so I won't guess. What I can say is that the whole territory is only 0.44 km² and its population is counted in the hundreds.

Does the Vatican have a McDonald's?

I can't confirm that from official sources, so check the Vatican State website before you plan a meal. Rome has plenty of places to eat just outside the walls, and a museum visit takes a few hours.

Keep planning your visit
