Tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame

By Updated 14 min read

Tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame is a garbled search phrase, but the answer is simple: one Vatican Museums entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. The full ticket costs EUR 20 at the door, and booking a timed slot online avoids the longest lines.

Tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame is an odd phrase, and I read it as a typo for a very common question: which ticket gets you into the Sistine Chapel? The answer is the Vatican Museums entry ticket, which entitles you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. Nothing on the official ticket pages mentions anything else attached to it, so I will treat the “notre dame” tail as a slip and focus on what you can actually buy.

Vatican City itself has no entry fee. You pay for the museum complex, and the chapel is simply the last room on that route. Here is how I would sort out the ticket, the price, the day and the booking channel.

What Tickets to Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel Actually Include

Tickets to Vatican City and the Sistine Chapel cover the Vatican Museums and the chapel, and they are valid only on the day of issue. The official page says so plainly and adds that tickets cannot be refunded, so choose your date with care.

The Sistine Chapel is not a separate attraction with its own door for most visitors. The Museums list it as one of their sections, next to the Raphael’s Rooms, the Borgia Apartment and the Pinacoteca. You walk through the galleries first and reach the chapel at the end.

St. Peter’s Basilica is a different building with its own entrance. Several reseller listings state that the basilica is not included in the museum ticket, and one of them notes that basilica entry is free but not guaranteed because of crowd control. I cover that in the planning section below.

If you want a page that compares every entry type side by side, our main ticket comparison is where I start people.

Vatican Museums Entry Tickets Explained

Vatican Museums entry tickets come in three layers: the base ticket, the reduced ticket and the optional skip-the-line booking. The base ticket carries the official price, reductions apply to specific groups, and the skip-the-line slot is a fee added on top when you reserve through the official site.

The official ticket page lists these prices:

Ticket type Official price USD at ECB rate (2026-11-06)
Full entry, no online booking EUR 20.00 about $22.33
Reduced entry, no online booking EUR 10.00 about $11.17
Reduced entry with Skip the Line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $16.75
Reduced for schools, no online booking EUR 5.00 about $5.58
Reduced for schools with Skip the Line EUR 5.00 + 2.00 about $7.82
Students, no online booking EUR 10.00 about $11.17
Students with Skip the Line EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $16.75

Prices come from the official Prices and Tickets page. Dollar figures use the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro, published on 2026-11-06. Prices change, so check the official page before you pay.

The official page does not state the online booking fee for a full ticket, so I will not guess it. Open the booking portal and the final total is shown before you pay.

Who Gets a Reduced or Free Ticket?

Free Vatican tickets go to children under 7 and to everyone on the last Sunday of the month. Visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% also get in free, with a companion included when the visitor is not self-sufficient, according to the official ticket page.

Those disability tickets cannot be booked online. They are issued at the “Special Permits” or “Welcome Desk” in the entrance hall, on presentation of the certificate or the European Disability Card. The same page says these visitors get priority skip-the-line entry.

Students and school groups have their own reduced rates, shown in the table above. Bring proof of eligibility, because the discount is checked at the door.

Free Sundays sound like a bargain, but I would think twice. The free day runs on a shorter schedule, and free entry tends to draw bigger crowds. Plan a paid weekday slot if your time in Rome is short.

Where to Buy Tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame Without Scams

Tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame are safest to buy on the official portal or from a reseller that clearly describes what it sells. The Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for online ticket sales and warn that similar-looking domains can charge significantly more.

My rule is simple. If a site calls itself official but its address is not the one above, close it. If a site is an independent reseller, the listing should say so, state the price and describe what you receive. Those listings often add value, such as an escort to the entrance, an audio guide or a guide.

I run an independent guide and I am not the official ticket office. When I recommend a reseller option below, I am pointing you to a partner listing, and you pay the partner’s price, not the museum’s.

Wondering whether booking is better than turning up? One Google Maps reviewer wrote that getting tickets online felt like a nightmare, so they turned up at 17:00 and waited 30 to 40 minutes. They managed the galleries before closing, but it was a rush. That works only as a last resort.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

Skip-the-Line Entry Tickets Compared

Skip-the-line entry tickets give you a timed slot and a separate entrance, so you bypass the ticket queue. They do not remove security screening, and they do not empty the galleries. The tours I list below all follow this model.

Here is what the four options in my shortlist offer, taken from their listings:

  • Museums and Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket (about $36): a dedicated entrance and an optional audio guide, with a 4.48 rating from over 160,000 reviews.
  • Rome Skip-The-Line Ticket from Tours And Tours (about $32): entry at your own pace, with a host who walks you to the entrance, from a meeting point at Via Germanico 8.
  • Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket from Inside Out Italy (about $53): a host who meets you at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74 and escorts you through security.
  • Gray Line I Love Rome guided tour (about $110): a group of up to 20 with a professional guide, the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel.

None of the three entry tickets includes a guide, and the listings say so. Only the Gray Line option is a guided tour. If you want a guide and the Pinecone Courtyard-to-chapel story told properly, that is the one to pick, and the guided tour version of this topic goes into detail.

My soft recommendation: if you only want the entry and plan to wander, the first or second option is enough. If you want someone to explain the ceiling, spend more on a guide. The price gap is large, so decide before you browse.

One more point on timing. One reviewer of the Tours And Tours ticket wrote that you will spend around four hours in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, and without a skip-the-line ticket add two to three hours of waiting. That is one traveler’s account, not an official figure, but it matches why I book ahead.

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”

Opening Hours and the Days to Skip

Vatican Museums opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., per the official hours page. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time.

Sundays are closed, with one exception. On the last Sunday of each month, the Museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free. That exception does not apply on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

The closure dates listed by the Museums are:

  • 1 and 6 January
  • 11 February
  • 19 March
  • 6 April
  • 1 May
  • 29 June
  • 14 and 15 August
  • 1 November
  • 8, 25 and 26 December

There are also temporary closures. The Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 4 and 18 December, with last entrance at 5:30 p.m. A one-hour closure of all sectors is listed for 10 November, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. These notices change, so the Museums’ opening and closing calendar for 2026-2027 is the final word.

Because the chapel is the last stop, a late arrival is a real risk. If you enter at 5:30 p.m. you will be hurrying, and the chapel can close early on some days. I would aim for a morning slot.

Getting There and Finding the Right Entrance

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, outside the walls. Reseller meeting points sit nearby but differ, so read your voucher. One listing says to go straight to the Viale Vaticano entrance, use the dedicated entrance, and scan the ticket at the “CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI” desk after security.

Another meets at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74. A third meets at Via Germanico 8 and asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your start time. The Gray Line tour meets at Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono, and the City Wonders ticket meets at the steps near Caffè Vaticano on the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.

Latecomers are the most common complaint in these listings. Tours And Tours states that the ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that late visitors lose skip-the-line access. Treat your slot as a firm appointment.

If your trip mixes sights, buying from Rome usually means choosing a slot that fits your hotel location, and the map below shows how close the Museums, the chapel and the basilica are.

The Sistine Chapel by the Numbers

Sistine Chapel facts show a small room with an enormous reputation, and a few figures explain why it commands your whole attention.

  • Length, width and height: 40.9 m by 13.4 m, and 21 m high. That is a hall roughly the size of a large church nave, so expect to stand and look up.
  • Built between 1473 and 1481 for Pope Sixtus IV, to a design by Baccio Pontelli, according to Wikipedia. Its name comes from the pope.
  • Ceiling painted 1508 to 1512 by Michelangelo for Pope Julius II. The ceiling is about 40.9 m long and 13.4 m wide, in Wikidata’s record of 4,093 by 1,341 cm. It is fresco on plaster.
  • The Last Judgment, 1535 to 1541, Michelangelo’s second commission in the room.
  • Vatican City covers 0.44 km2 and became a state on 11 February 1929, per Wikidata. That is why a visit feels compact, but the Museums route inside it is long.
  • Population 949 in 2024, which shows how small the state is next to the number of visitors queuing at its door.

I add these because they change how I plan: the chapel is small, the route to it is long, and the ceiling rewards time. A short, well-timed visit beats a rushed one.

Michelangelo’s work is described this way on Wikipedia: “The Sistine Chapel ceiling, painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

“The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Italian: Soffitto della Cappella Sistina), painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

What to Expect Inside the Chapel and the Museums

The Vatican Museums route passes through the Pio Clementino collections, galleries and the Raphael Rooms before it reaches the Sistine Chapel. Listings describe over 20,000 works of art, with painters such as Michelangelo and Raphael, and the Gray Line tour covers the Raphael Rooms and the School of Athens.

Inside the chapel you will see the ceiling’s nine scenes from the Book of Genesis, including The Creation of Adam, according to Wikipedia. The walls carry earlier frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino, Ghirlandaio and Rosselli on the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ.

Michelangelo returned to paint The Last Judgment behind the altar after the Sack of Rome. Look at it last, as you leave.

The chapel is also where cardinals elect a new pope. That fact is why it is still a working room and not only a gallery, and why you should behave as the guards ask.

For a closer look at the chapel on its own, Sistine Chapel entry tickets covers the chapel-first view. If you are comparing combined options, what do tickets to the Sistine Chapel and Vatican include? is the sibling page I would read next.

Adding St. Peter’s Basilica to the Plan

St. Peter’s Basilica is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:10 p.m., according to its Google Maps listing. The basilica’s own site is basilicasanpietro.va, and that is where I would check conditions before you go.

The museum ticket does not include the basilica or its dome. One listing notes that basilica entry is free of charge but access may vary because of crowd control. Another reseller sells an upgrade that adds reserved access to St. Peter’s Basilica when you select that option.

My advice is to treat the two visits as separate plans. Do the Museums on a timed slot and give the basilica its own window, ideally another morning. Trying both in a single afternoon is how people end up rushing the chapel.

The upgrade route is worth a look if time is tight. The Touristation option below includes reserved basilica access, a Big Bus hop-on, hop-off tour and a Vatican Gardens minibus tour only when you select those options, so read the option names before you pay.

What Travelers Say About Skip-the-Line Entry

Skip-the-line entry reviews are mostly positive and consistent. The top-rated listing summarizes that travelers praise the collections and say timed entry makes access easier, with audio guides letting them move at their own pace. The most common complaint is unclear directions to the correct queue and arrival time.

One five-star reviewer of the Inside Out Italy ticket put it this way: “We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20.”

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”
Keri, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket

Another Google Maps reviewer of the Sistine Chapel suggests going after 3 p.m., when most cruise ship tours are over, and warns that the crowds are brutal.

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”
Kíke · Google Maps review about Sistine Chapel

That timing tip is one traveler’s view, and the official hours still apply, so a late slot leaves you less time. I would take it only with an entry no later than mid-afternoon.

Planning Your Final Booking

Your final booking should follow the shortlist I would use: pick a weekday, avoid the closure dates, book a morning timed slot, and decide whether you want a guide. Then confirm the price on the official ticket page, because EUR 20 at the door is the baseline everything else is measured against.

If you want the simplest route to tickets to Vatican City and Sistine Chapelnotre Dame, meaning the real Museums-plus-chapel entry, choose the plain skip-the-line ticket. If you want a guide, choose the group tour. If you want the cheapest compliant route, buy the official EUR 20 ticket and accept the queue risk.

Check three things on the day: your time slot, your meeting point and the closure calendar. Then arrive 15 minutes early, carry a phone voucher or print one, and keep the afternoon after the chapel free for the basilica.

For wider options, vatican sistine tickets compares more combinations, and Sistine tickets is the short version for the chapel alone.

The full entry ticket is EUR 20.00 without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Reduced tickets are EUR 10.00, and children under 7 enter free. Always confirm current prices on the official Vatican Museums page.

What is the official website of the Vatican Museums?

The only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va. The Vatican Museums warn that look-alike domains may charge much higher prices, so check the address before you pay.

What is the best way to buy Vatican tickets?

Buy a timed ticket in advance, either on the official portal or from a reseller that offers a dedicated entrance. Resellers charge more than the official EUR 20, but some add an audio guide, an escort to the door or a guide.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays, because the Museums are closed except on the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free and the halls are busy. Also avoid the listed closure dates such as 1 November, 8 December and 25-26 December.

Does the Sistine Chapel need a separate ticket?

No. The Vatican Museums entry ticket covers both the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. The chapel sits at the end of the Museums route.
