How much does it cost to visit the Vatican?

By Updated 12 min read

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican depends on what you enter: St. Peter's Basilica is free, the Scavi excavations tour is 13 euros, and skip-the-line Museums tickets on GetYourGuide start from about $32. A guided tour with the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica runs roughly $60 to $77 per person.

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican? The honest answer is anywhere from nothing to about $77 per person, depending on what you want to see. St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter, the Scavi excavations tour is a fixed 13 euros, and skip-the-line tickets for the Museums and Sistine Chapel start around $32 on GetYourGuide.

I’ll break the costs down by attraction so you can add up your own total. I’ll also flag the extras that catch people out, like the dome climb, audio guides and the closed Sundays.

What Does It Cost to Enter the Vatican? A Quick Price Map

Vatican entry costs are paid attraction by attraction, and the three big sites work very differently. The Basilica is free, the Museums and Sistine Chapel need a ticket, and the Scavi tour is a small-group visit with its own fee.

Here is the full picture in one place. Museum and tour prices are the “from” prices in the GetYourGuide data I use for this site. Always confirm current figures before you pay.

What you visit Typical cost Notes
St. Peter’s Basilica Free Security line applies; timed access can vary with crowds
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel (timed entry ticket) From about $32 to $54 Skip-the-line options; no guide
Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica with a guide About $60 to $77 Guide included; 2 to 4 hours
Scavi excavations tour 13 euros (about $14.50) No price reductions; booked through the Excavations Office
St. Peter’s Dome Paid, price not quoted here Ticket includes Basilica entry and a digital audio guide

The Vatican Museums publish their own current entry prices, and I’m not going to quote a figure I can’t source on this page. Check the official Vatican Museums site for today’s number. If you want to compare formats before choosing, Vatican tickets online are laid out side by side on my homepage.

Is St. Peter’s Basilica Free to Enter?

St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter, with no ticket needed, and one GetYourGuide listing states plainly that Basilica entry is free of charge, though access is not guaranteed and may vary because of crowd control. Google Maps lists it as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm.

You will still pass a security check, and that is where the time goes. As one visitor put it:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

My advice is to go early and plan for a line rather than a fee. If you only want the free visit, set aside a short block of time rather than half a day. Dress rules apply here as much as anywhere else in the Vatican, so cover your shoulders and knees.

How Much Do Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Tickets Cost?

Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel tickets with skip-the-line entry start at about $32 and rise to roughly $54 for a self-guided option. The Sistine Chapel has no separate ticket because you walk through it as part of the Museums route.

Here are the three self-guided options I would compare first:

  • Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket at about $36 includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and the booking fee, with an audio guide if you pick that option.
  • Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket at about $32 includes fast-track entry, and a host walks you to the Museum entrance.
  • Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket at about $53 adds a host who checks you in at an office and escorts you through security.

The cheapest option is not always the best one for you. The $32 ticket asks you to redeem at a set address and arrive 15 minutes early, and latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line entry. Read the meeting details before you buy. If you prefer a self-guided visit at a fair price, I’d start with the middle option.

One traveler summed up the value case simply:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

Remember that these tickets do not include St. Peter’s Basilica or its dome. The Basilica is free, and the dome is a separate paid experience.

How Much Does a Guided Vatican Tour Cost?

A guided Vatican tour costs about $60 to $77 per person in the GetYourGuide data, covering the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and usually St. Peter’s Basilica. The higher price pays for a licensed guide and a planned route, and many of these tours also cover Basilica entry.

The three tours I’d look at first:

  • Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Basilica Tour at about $60 runs 2 to 3 hours with a meeting point at the Tours About office.
  • Rome: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica Tour at about $71 runs 2 to 4 hours, with a licensed guide and audio headsets.
  • Vatican, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter’s Skip-the-Line Tour at about $77 runs 3 hours and includes the guide and guaranteed skip-the-line access.

Tips are listed as excluded on several of these tours, so budget a little extra if you want to thank your guide. If you are weighing guided against self-guided, my own rule is simple. Pick a guide if it is your first visit and you want the history explained, and pick a plain entry ticket if you want to wander at your own speed. For a wider look at what a tour costs, see how much a Vatican tour costs.

Travelers on the $71 tour praise the guides who bring the Museums and the Sistine Chapel to life, and reviewers describe it as worthwhile and informative. Some travelers mention that clearer audio equipment would help, so check the headset details when you book.

How Much Does the Vatican Scavi Tour Cost?

The Vatican Scavi tour costs 13 euros per person, roughly $14.50 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. The official Excavations Office states the price includes the contribution for the guide and that no reductions in price are given for any reason.

The Excavations Office reservations page explains how to ask for a visit. Requests go in writing or in person at the office, using the south (left) entrance just outside the Colonnade. You must give the number of participants, their names, the language you want and possible dates. The office assigns the time, and requests are filled based on the places left at the closest date.

The office lists its hours as Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 14:00. Because places are limited and the time is not yours to choose, I’d send the request as early as you can. This is the cheapest paid ticket in the Vatican, but it is also the one with the least flexibility.

To convert euros on your own, the ECB reference rate is 1.1165 dollars per euro as of the ECB reference rates on 2026-11-06. Your card will use its own rate, so the real cost can differ slightly.

What About the Dome Climb and Other Extras?

The dome climb is a paid add-on, and the ticket bought online includes entry to St. Peter’s Basilica plus a digital audio guide. The official dome FAQ says the Basilica visit should be done 90 minutes before your dome entry time. I don’t have a dome price in my data, so check the official St. Peter’s Dome FAQ for the current one.

Here are the practical points that affect what you spend and how you plan:

  • The visit lasts about 1 hour on average, according to the same FAQ.
  • The lift only goes up to the terrace level. From the inner ring you climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring.
  • You will receive QR codes by email after booking, and they are mandatory for entry.
  • Only small personal bags are allowed, and there is no luggage storage.
  • Shoulders and knees must be covered.

Some guided tours, such as the $71 tour, list pre-reserved dome access with the elevator as available with select options. Compare the option names closely, because the cheaper version of a tour often leaves the dome out.

There is also a family option worth knowing about. The Vatican Museums offered a guided tour called “Capturing Nature” for families with children aged 6 to 12 in the Vatican Gardens. It lasts two hours, runs in Italian and English, and ends with free independent access to the Museums. The official page does not list a price in the part I have, so check it directly.

Can You Buy Tickets at the Door, and Is It Cheaper?

Buying Vatican tickets at the door is possible, but I don’t recommend it for the Museums. One reviewer on Google Maps said getting tickets online was hard, so they turned up around 17:00 and waited 30 to 40 minutes. They then rushed through the galleries before closing.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That story shows the real cost of skipping a booking. You may save time on planning, but you risk a long wait and a short visit. A timed ticket removes that risk. The self-guided entry tickets above include a booking fee, so what you see is usually what you pay. If you want to see how the options stack up before committing, you can book Vatican tickets online from my homepage and compare them there.

Whichever ticket you choose, read the arrival instructions. The self-guided entry ticket asks you to go directly to the Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano and show the voucher to the guards. It also says not to arrive outside your assigned time slot.

When Are the Vatican Sites Open, and Which Day Should You Skip?

Vatican opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm for the Museums and Sistine Chapel, which are closed on Sunday. St. Peter’s Basilica is listed as open every day from 7 am to 7:10 pm. These hours come from Google Maps data, so confirm them on the official sites.

For cost planning, Sunday matters most. If you only have Sunday free, you can still enter the Basilica at no charge, but you won’t get the Museums or the Sistine Chapel. That means a Sunday visit costs less but shows you less.

Public holidays and special events can change hours, so I’d check the official calendar before you finalize a date. Paying for a skip-the-line ticket and then finding the Museums closed is a costly mistake you can avoid with one search. Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City facts help explain why a small country charges for some sites and not others. Every number below comes from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². That small footprint explains why everything is within walking distance, so you will not need transport inside the walls.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Visitors outnumber residents by a huge margin on a normal day.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, when the modern state was created.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which is why the art and buildings are protected and visits are controlled.
  • Currency: the euro. All Vatican prices are in euros, so convert as needed.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin, though ticket pages and tours run in English.

If you are curious about the state itself, Wikipedia’s Vatican City article covers its history from the Lateran Treaty onward. For planning how to move around the state once inside, how to visit Vatican City gives a route.

What Should You Budget Per Person?

A Vatican budget per person depends on the kind of day you want. A free-only day costs nothing in tickets. A single self-guided Museums ticket costs about $32 to $54. A guided Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica tour costs about $60 to $77. Add 13 euros (about $14.50) if you also secure a Scavi visit.

Here is how I’d think about it:

  • Tightest budget: the free Basilica, plus the lowest-priced Museums entry ticket.
  • Best balance: the $36 entry ticket with the audio guide option, then the free Basilica on foot.
  • Most hands-off: a guided tour, which covers the route and the guide in one price.

For a broader view of ticket types and pricing, my pillar guide to Vatican Museum tickets compares them in more detail, and the full Vatican tickets topic hub lists every guide. If you want a second angle on the same question, see what it costs to see the Vatican.

How Much Does It Cost to Visit the Vatican? My Final Advice

The cost of visiting the Vatican for most first-time travelers is about $32 to $77 for the Museums and Sistine Chapel, with the Basilica free and the dome or Scavi as optional extras. I’d book a timed ticket, pick a weekday, cover your shoulders and knees, and confirm every price on the official sites before you pay.

If you want one simple plan, buy a self-guided Museums ticket or a guided tour for the morning, then walk to St. Peter’s Basilica for the free visit. That gives you the main sights without paying for more than you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official website for buying tickets to the Vatican museums?

The Vatican Museums run their own site at museivaticani.va, and that is where official entry details and current prices are published. Check it before you book anything, because prices and slots change. Third-party sellers such as GetYourGuide offer timed skip-the-line options on top of that.

Can I wear jeans to Vatican?

The official St. Peter's Basilica guidance asks for clothing suited to a place of worship, with shoulders and knees covered. Jeans that cover your knees meet that part of the rule, and a top with sleeves or a scarf over bare shoulders finishes the job. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are the usual reasons people are turned away.

What day to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sunday if you want the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, because Google Maps lists both as closed that day. St. Peter's Basilica is listed as open every day, but always check the official calendar for special closures. Weekdays when many tour groups arrive can be busy, so booking a timed slot matters.

How much does it cost to visit the Sistine Chapel?

There is no separate Sistine Chapel ticket, because you reach it through the Vatican Museums route. Museums and Sistine Chapel entry tickets on GetYourGuide start from about $32. Guided tours that add St. Peter's Basilica cost more.
