Problems Getting Tickets on Vatican Website

By Updated 14 min read

Problems getting tickets on Vatican website usually come down to three things: a checkout that errors out, a date that shows no availability, or a look-alike domain that is not the real shop. The only official online shop is tickets.museivaticani.va, and if it keeps failing you can retry at another time, buy at the door, or book a skip-the-line ticket from a reseller.

Problems getting tickets on Vatican website pages are frustrating because the stakes feel high: one failed payment and your whole Rome day seems to hang on it. I’m going to walk you through what usually goes wrong, how to tell the real shop from a copy, and which backup routes still get you inside the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

My short advice: do not keep hammering the same button. Check the address, change one thing at a time, and have a plan B ready before you retry.

Problems Getting Tickets on Vatican Website: What Usually Goes Wrong

Problems getting tickets on the Vatican website come in three kinds, and each kind needs its own fix. Work out which one you have and you skip an hour of random retrying.

The checkout fails or the page stops loading

A failed checkout is the most common trouble visitors hit: you pick a date, enter your details, and the process stops before any confirmation arrives. Sometimes the message mentions a session that expired, sometimes a payment error, sometimes nothing useful at all.

I can’t see inside the shop’s systems, so I won’t claim a single cause. What I can say is how I would work through it, step by step, in the order of effort. The troubleshooting section further down gives that order.

The calendar shows no tickets

The calendar showing no tickets means every day you want looks unavailable when you open the date picker. That is not a technical fault. It means the slots you can see are taken, or that the day is a closure. The section on missing availability explains how to read this and what to try next.

The site is not the real one

A fake ticket site catches a third group of readers, who never reach a failing checkout because they landed on a copy of the shop. The official Vatican Museums page is blunt about this: it warns about websites that use domains similar to the official one, which may charge significantly higher prices. Check this first, because it costs you nothing.

Are You on the Real Vatican Museums Ticket Site?

The real Vatican Museums ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va, the only official online shop, according to the Vatican Museums prices and tickets page. That page also tells visitors to always check that they are buying through the official portal.

Traveler checking problems getting tickets on the Vatican website on a phone outside the Vatican MuseumsBook aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36

Here is my quick routine. Open the Museums’ own site, museivaticani.va, and use the ticket button from there instead of clicking an advert or a link in a message. Then read the address bar before you type any card number. If the domain is not exactly the one above, close the tab.

If you want a longer breakdown of how to spot the right address, I cover it in which Vatican tickets official website is the real one. For a version aimed at people searching by city name, see the Vatican City tickets site explained.

Two more points help here:

  • The Wikidata record for Vatican City lists its official state websites on the vaticanstate.va domain, which is a separate site from the Museums’ shop (Wikidata). The state site is not where you buy Museums tickets.
  • The Basilica runs its own official website at basilicasanpietro.va for products such as the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and guided tours (St. Peter’s Basilica official site). If you want those, you are on a different shop from the Museums.

Mixing these up is a quiet cause of “my ticket isn’t there” moments. For a wider look at how the sites compare, my page on the Vatican tickets website and what it sells lines them up.

What Should You Do When the Page Errors Out or Payment Fails?

When the page errors out or payment fails, change one thing at a time in this order: refresh the session, change the browser, check the payment method, then try another time of day. Working in sequence shows you what fixed it and stops duplicate bookings.

Here is the order I would use:

  1. Start a fresh session. Close the tab, reopen the Museums’ site, and begin again from the ticket button. A stale session is the simplest explanation for a page that stops working halfway through.
  2. Switch the browser or device. If the phone fails, try a laptop, or the other way around. Turn off ad blockers for the shop while you pay.
  3. Check the card. Banks sometimes block a first payment to a foreign merchant. A short call or a confirmation in your banking app can clear it. Another card is a fast test.
  4. Look before you retry. If you got an error after paying, check your email and your bank before you buy again. You do not want two tickets for the same slot, because the Museums state that tickets cannot be refunded.
  5. Try a different time. Pick another day or another slot. If other dates go through, the original date was probably sold out.
  6. Contact the ticket office. Use the contact details on the official site if money left your account and no ticket arrived. Keep a screenshot of the error and the transaction.

That is advice, not a guarantee. If you’ve done all six and nothing works, stop. At that point the practical move is a backup route, covered below.

I also keep a separate walkthrough on how to approach getting tickets for the Vatican from the start, which is useful if you would rather rebuild your plan than debug the checkout.

Why Does the Vatican Website Show No Tickets Available?

The Vatican website showing no tickets available usually means the slots you can see are gone or the Museums are closed that day. Neither is a bug, and neither means you can’t get in.

Start by checking the calendar. The Museums publish a calendar of museum openings and closures, and the free-entry Sunday is “subject to” that calendar, per the official prices page. Sundays are a trap: Google Maps lists the Museums as closed on Sunday (Vatican Museums listing), with 8 am to 8 pm opening on the other six days. The official prices page says entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, again subject to the calendar. Always settle that with the official calendar, because it is the one that counts.

Then widen your search:

  • Look at weekdays you skipped. Many visitors fix on one date and never test the neighbors.
  • Check different times in the same day. Some slots can free up while others stay full.
  • Return later. The slots you see change as other people book or the calendar updates.

The official site shows what is on sale. A reseller may hold its own allocation, which is why a backup can work when the shop looks empty. I’d treat that as a legitimate option, but read the details carefully, because each product states its own meeting point and rules.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That Google Maps reviewer describes buying online as a nightmare and then waiting 30 to 40 minutes at the door at about 17:00. It’s one person’s experience, not a promise, but it shows why a door ticket is a real fallback if you are flexible.

What Do Official Prices Look Like Before You Retry?

Official Vatican Museums prices are worth knowing before you retry, because they let you spot a copy site at a glance. The official page lists the following, and I’ve added dollar figures at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 USD per EUR on 2026-11-06.

Ticket (official Vatican Museums page) Price in EUR About in USD
Full entry, without online booking EUR 20.00 about $22.33
Reduced entry, without online booking EUR 10.00 about $11.17
Reduced entry, with “Skip the Line” booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $16.75
Reduced for students, with “Skip the Line” booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $16.75
Schools, without online booking EUR 5.00 about $5.58
Schools, with “Skip the Line” booking EUR 5.00 + 2.00 about $7.81

Prices and rules change, so confirm them on the official prices page before you pay. If you want the full picture of every ticket type, my guide to Vatican Museum tickets goes through each category.

Two rules matter when a checkout fails. First, the ticket is valid for the day it is issued only. Second, the page says tickets cannot be refunded. So an overpriced copy site is not just annoying; it is money you do not get back.

Can You Just Buy at the Door Instead?

You can buy Vatican Museums tickets at the door, and if online checkouts keep failing, that is a real fallback. The official prices page lists a full ticket at EUR 20.00 (about $22.33) and a reduced one at EUR 10.00 (about $11.17) without online booking, so the door is a legal route in. What you give up is certainty and the skip-the-line option.

The cost of that choice is time. One GetYourGuide reviewer wrote that a visit takes about four hours if you want to enjoy it properly, and that without a skip-the-line ticket you should add at least two to three hours of waiting:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

That is a single traveler’s account and queues vary by day. Still, I would not plan a half-day around the door on a busy morning. If you can, go in a quieter slot, and keep a card and your ID ready.

Some visitors do not need to book online at all. According to the official page, free entry applies to children under 7 and, on the last Sunday of the month, to everyone, subject to the opening calendar. Disabled visitors with certified invalidity of at least 67% also enter free, and the accessibility page explains that these tickets cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, with priority skip-the-line entry for the visitor and a companion where needed.

If that describes you, a failed online booking is not your problem at all. Go to the desk with your documents.

Vatican Museums Entry Tickets Explained: Your Backup Options

Vatican Museums entry tickets from a reseller are the simplest fix when the official shop keeps failing. It gives you a confirmed time slot and skips the ticket queue, and you pay a bit more for the convenience. These are the Museums-and-Sistine-Chapel tickets I would look at first.

I’m not the official ticket office, and these are listings from independent operators on GetYourGuide. Read each page for its meeting point, because they differ. The first listing, for instance, sends you straight to the entrance on Viale Vaticano and then to the CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI desk after security. The one from Tours And Tours asks you to redeem the ticket at Via Germanico 8, arriving 15 minutes early. Latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access there.

Another asks you to check in at an office at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, where a host escorts you to the entrance. None of these include a guide, so they suit people who want to explore alone with an audio guide.

When I compare options, I ask three questions: how do I get the ticket, when must I arrive, and what is not included. If you want to see every option side by side, you can compare Vatican tickets online in one place.

Which Backup Ticket Should You Choose?

The right backup ticket depends on how much help you want: a self-paced ticket is cheaper, while a guided tour costs more but explains what you are seeing.

  • Entrance ticket, dedicated entrance: $36.21, rated 4.48 from 160,009 reviews. Skip-the-ticket-line entry with an optional audio guide; no guide or dome access.
  • Skip-the-line ticket, Tours And Tours: $32.31, rated 4.23 from 13,313 reviews. A host takes you to the entrance; no guide and no Basilica.
  • Entry ticket with host, Inside Out Italy: $53.48, rated 4.42 from 19,035 reviews. Skip-the-line tickets and a host on arrival; no guide.
  • Group tour, Gray Line I Love Rome: $109.87, rated 4.32 from 10,589 reviews. Guided, with official headsets.

The group tour is the one to book if you want the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel explained; it caps the group at 20 people and includes official headsets.

Prices on GetYourGuide are shown in US dollars and can change, so check the listing. One point from the listings that applies to all of them: St. Peter’s Basilica is not part of a basic Museums ticket. The first listing says access to the Basilica is free of charge but not guaranteed, because crowd control can change it.

If you are weighing the official shop against a reseller, my page on the best way to use a Vatican website to book tickets goes through the trade-offs in more detail.

Vatican Museums Ticket Facts at a Glance

Vatican Museums ticket facts about the place itself help explain why the booking system comes under strain. The figures below come from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The whole state is tiny, so the Museums, the Basilica and the Square share the same few streets and the same crowds.
  • Established: 1929-02-11. The modern state dates from the Lateran Treaty, which is why it runs its own ticket systems separately from Italy.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. A listed site is a draw for visitors worldwide, so demand is steady.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Fewer than a thousand residents, which means almost everyone in line is a visitor.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, so your card may charge a foreign-transaction fee.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00. Check the slot time against Rome time, not your home clock.
  • Top-level internet domain: .va. Official pages end in .va, which is a handy check against copy sites. The Museums’ pages are on museivaticani.va and the Basilica’s on basilicasanpietro.va.

That last point is my favorite shortcut for avoiding problems getting tickets on Vatican website copies. If the address does not end in .va and it claims to be official, be careful. The Wikipedia entry on Vatican City gives more background on how the state works.

Where Do You Enter, and What Do You Show at the Door?

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano: show your ticket at security, then scan it at the ticket desk. Paper and mobile vouchers are accepted for the GetYourGuide entrance, according to the listing, and you should arrive within your slot.

The map below shows the Museums, the Basilica and the CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI desk that appears in one listing’s instructions.

Your Plan for Problems Getting Tickets on Vatican Website

Your plan for problems getting tickets on the Vatican website runs in this order. Check that the address is tickets.museivaticani.va, then try a fresh session, another browser and another card. If that fails, test other dates and the official calendar before you assume it’s sold out.

If you still have no ticket, choose between a door ticket and a reseller. The door costs EUR 20.00 (about $22.33) for a full ticket, with queue time on top. A reseller costs more but gives you a fixed slot, which is why I’d book Vatican tickets online from a reseller when the date is fixed and you can’t afford to gamble. Take a screenshot of any error, and don’t pay twice until you’ve checked your email and bank.

You can find more on the subject in the Vatican tickets hub, where every question about booking, prices and entry sits together. Final advice from me: decide on your backup before you start the payment, so a failed checkout is an annoyance, not a ruined day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vatican tickets website legit?

Only one online shop is official: tickets.museivaticani.va, which the Vatican Museums name on their own prices page. The Museums warn that look-alike domains exist and may charge much higher prices, so check the address before you pay.

Why does the Vatican museum tickets website not work for me?

I can't see what is happening on your screen, so treat these as the usual suspects: a stale browser session, a card your bank blocks, or a date with no slots left. Try a fresh browser window, call your bank, and test a different day before you give up.

Can I buy Vatican Museums tickets at the door?

Yes. The official prices page lists a full ticket at EUR 20.00 and a reduced ticket at EUR 10.00 without online booking. Expect to queue, and remember that the ticket is only valid on the day it is issued.

Can I get a refund if I buy the wrong Vatican ticket?

The official Vatican Museums page states that tickets cannot be refunded. That is why I recommend checking the date, the time slot and the website address before you press pay.

Are there free Vatican Museums tickets I can't book online?

Yes. Free tickets for disabled visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% (and a companion where needed) are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall. They cannot be booked online.
