Entering Vatican City

By Updated 11 min read

Entering Vatican City means walking into a tiny sovereign state inside Rome, and you do it through one of two main visitor routes: the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano or the security check in St. Peter's Square. Both have rules on clothing and bags, so plan which one you need before you leave your hotel.

Entering Vatican City is easier than most visitors expect. The state is a walled enclave surrounded by Rome, and you cross into it on foot at St. Peter’s Square or at the museum gate. The real planning is about which door you use, what you wear and what you carry.

I’ll walk you through the two main routes, the checks you will pass, the clothing rules and the best way to organize a single day. If you still need to pick a ticket, you can compare Vatican tickets online once you know which door you want.

How Do You Enter Vatican City as a Visitor?

Entering Vatican City as a visitor happens on foot through one of two public routes: the security check in St. Peter’s Square for the basilica, or the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano. Plenty of people use both in a single day, yet each door has a separate queue and separate rules.

Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state, an enclave inside Rome ruled by the pope, according to Wikipedia. That sounds like a border crossing, but for a visitor it feels like walking from one street to the next. You do not pass a customs desk. You pass security.

The state was created by the Lateran Treaty, signed on 11 February 1929, and the same Wikipedia entry notes it is a de facto member of the Schengen Area. For a short trip, the useful fact is simpler: your ticket or your place in the security line is what gets you in.

My advice is to decide first what you want to see. St. Peter’s Basilica is the free-entry stop. The museums and the Sistine Chapel need a timed ticket. The dome has its own booking.

Which Entrance Should You Use?

The right Vatican entrance depends on your target: take Viale Vaticano for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, and the St. Peter’s Square checkpoint for the basilica and the dome. The two sit on different sides of the state, so picking the wrong one means a long walk.

Booking details in the tour data confirm the museum side: visitors are told to go directly to the Vatican Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, show the ticket to security, and then scan it at the online ticket desk. One partner’s meeting point says to take Metro Line A to Ottaviano, a 10-minute walk from its office.

The basilica side works differently. Before reaching the dome, everyone passes the security checks in St. Peter’s Square, and the same rule applies to the basilica itself.

Where you are going Where you enter What you need
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Museum entrance, Viale Vaticano Timed ticket, security check
St. Peter’s Basilica St. Peter’s Square checkpoint Security check, covered shoulders and knees
St. Peter’s Dome St. Peter’s Square checkpoint, assigned route Booked slot and QR code
Dedicated worship access Indicated entrance gate Identification at the gate

If you want a deeper look at the doors themselves, my guide to the Vatican City entrance covers them one by one. For the square, see St. Peter’s Square and what you cross to reach it.

One warning: do not tell a taxi to take you to St. Peter’s Square if you are heading to the museums. The two entrances sit on opposite sides of the state, so ask for the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano instead.

What Security Check Do You Pass When Entering Vatican City?

The Vatican security check applies to everyone heading into the main sights, and ticket holders get no exemption. A skip-the-line ticket cuts the ticket queue, but the security checks remain mandatory for all visitors.

At the museums, you show your ticket to the guards, then scan it at the box office desk after the security check. At the basilica, the check happens in the square before the doors.

If you book the dome online, the basilica explains that you receive your voucher first, then the QR codes, and a route assignment (Sobieski or Lambertini). Show the QR code on your phone or in print. If it does not arrive within 30 minutes, the basilica’s help page says to write to the booking address given there and check your spam folder.

Here is how one traveler described the basilica side:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

That matches what I’d tell a friend: go early, expect a line, and expect it to move.

What Should You Wear When Entering Vatican City?

The Vatican dress code asks you to cover your shoulders and knees and keep any hat in your bag. According to the official visitor information, sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted.

That rule applies to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens. The same page extends the rule to visible personal objects and distinctive signs, such as tattoos, that may offend Catholic morality or common decency.

The dome has the same requirement. Its help page says clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required, with shoulders and knees always covered.

My practical fix is a light scarf or shirt in your day bag. In summer you can wear shorts that reach the knee, then you never have to turn around at the gate. A refusal at the door wastes a booked slot, and a booked slot is the one thing you cannot rebook easily.

What Can You Bring Into Vatican City?

What you can bring into Vatican City is best limited to a small day bag, with anything bulky left behind. At the Vatican Museums, luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, packages and containers go to the cloakroom when staff consider them too large, and the cloakroom service is free.

Knives, scissors and metal tools of any type must also be stored there. Animals are not allowed in the museums, with the exception of guide dogs equipped with a muzzle and lead and animals for certified pet therapy.

There is one trap for people doing both sights in a day. The same page reminds visitors who continue to the basilica not to leave their baggage in the Vatican Museums. For the dome, the basilica says only small personal bags are permitted and there is no cloakroom there.

So pack light, carry water and a phone with your QR codes, and keep the rest at your hotel.

When Is Vatican City Open for Visitors?

Vatican City opening hours start with St. Peter’s Basilica, which opens at 7:00 a.m. every day. Its official opening hours page lists a 7:00 p.m. closing from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027, and 8:00 p.m. in the summer period that ended on 25 October 2026.

The dome opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. in the winter period. Guided visits run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Sundays and Vatican holidays from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The museums are listed by Maps as open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Hours change by season and holiday, so confirm them on the Vatican Museums site before you go. For a day-by-day breakdown, see Vatican Museum hours.

I’d arrive at the basilica first thing, when the line is shortest, then walk to the museums for a late-morning slot. Reverse it if your museum ticket is early.

Do You Need a Ticket to Enter?

A Vatican entry ticket is not required for the basilica itself, but the museums and the Sistine Chapel both need one. Free basilica entry is a good reason to make it your first stop.

Some tour listings state the limit plainly. One museum ticket lists St. Peter’s Basilica as excluded: it is free of charge, but access is not guaranteed and may vary due to crowd control. Another says its listing excludes the dome.

If you have not decided what to buy, book Vatican tickets online and match the ticket to the doors above. For the free side, my breakdown of whether St. Peter’s Basilica is free explains what costs money and what does not.

Entering Vatican City With a Tour or on Your Own

Entering Vatican City with a tour suits you if you want someone to handle the meeting point and explain the art, while a self-guided ticket gives you your own pace. Either way you pass through the same gates.

Self-guided buyers praise timed entry and the audio guide. One listing’s summary says timed entry makes access easier, though some travelers want clearer directions to the correct queue. Guided listings draw praise for guides and skipped lines, with some travelers wanting clearer detail on the basilica.

Read the meeting point before you pay. Some operators meet you at an office and walk you to the gate, which is not the same as meeting at the entrance. One says plainly that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point.

I’d book a timed museum entry if you want freedom, and a guided tour if the art matters more than the logistics.

How Do You Plan a Full Day Entering Vatican City?

A full Vatican day works best if you begin at the basilica when it opens, head to the museums for a booked slot, and end at the Sistine Chapel, which sits at the finish of the museum route. That order takes advantage of the short early line and stops you doubling back.

Two cautions come from the official pages. First, the cloakroom note: do not leave bags in the museums if you plan to continue to the basilica. Second, the dome ticket includes basilica entry, which should be done 90 minutes before the dome time, so book the dome for later in the morning.

Food is easy to find just outside the walls. One listed option is a pizza restaurant on Via delle Fornaci, open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, in the Maps data above.

If you also want to attend a service, read my page on Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Worshippers use a dedicated access path and identify themselves at an indicated gate, per the basilica’s hours page, then can return later through the standard entrances to sightsee.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City facts and figures give a sense of what you are stepping into. Every number below comes from Wikidata’s Vatican City record.

  • Area: 0.44 km². You can cross the whole state on foot, so distances inside are short; the long walks are the museum galleries.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. This is the date of the Lateran Treaty that created the modern state.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Almost everyone you meet inside is a visitor.
  • Currency: euro. Pay as you would in Rome.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and staff speak English at visitor points.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. That is why bags, clothing and conduct are policed.
  • Time zone: Central European Time (UTC+01:00). Match this when your QR slot says a time.

For the geography behind those numbers, see where the Vatican is inside Rome.

Your Checklist Before Entering Vatican City

Your Vatican entry checklist comes down to three things: book what needs booking, dress for a place of worship and pack light.

  1. Pick the doors you need: Viale Vaticano for the museums, St. Peter’s Square for the basilica and dome.
  2. Reserve museum and dome slots early, and keep the QR codes on your phone.
  3. Cover shoulders and knees, and leave hats off.
  4. Carry only a small bag; use the free museum cloakroom if staff ask.
  5. Check opening hours and holiday closures on the official sites the day before.

If you want the full picture of the state, my Vatican overview is the pillar guide, and the About Vatican City hub collects every page on the place itself. When you are ready to choose your slot, see every Vatican ticket type side by side and enter with a plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to visit Vatican?

I'd split it in two: reserve a timed slot for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, then walk to St. Peter's Basilica for its free-entry security line. Guided options add a host or guide, and the dome needs its own booking, which includes basilica entry.

What is the official website for buying tickets to the Vatican museums?

The Vatican Museums run their own site at museivaticani.va, and St. Peter's Basilica sells its dome and guided products at basilicasanpietro.va. Reseller listings, including the tours below, are separate from those official offices.

Is a guided tour of the Vatican Museum worth it?

It depends on how you like to visit. Reviewers of the guided options praise knowledgeable guides who explain the museums and Sistine Chapel, while self-guided ticket buyers like exploring at their own pace with an audio guide.

Can you walk from Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

Official guidance for the museums mentions visitors who continue their tour in the basilica, so the two are meant to be combined in one day. Plan on a separate security check at St. Peter's Square, and do not leave your bags in the museum cloakroom if you are going on.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Sunday is the day to plan around: map listings show the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel closed, and the basilica runs reduced guided-visit hours of 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Always check the official calendar for holiday closures.

Keep planning your visit
