How to go to Vatican City from Rome?

By Updated 13 min read

How to go to Vatican City from Rome is simple because the city-state sits inside Rome, so you just travel to the right entrance. Head to St. Peter's Square for the Basilica or to Viale Vaticano for the Vatican Museums, and the Ottaviano stop on Metro Line A serves both areas.

How to go to Vatican City from Rome comes down to a single decision: which entrance you need. The city-state is no day trip out of town. It is an enclave inside Rome, so you head to the right gate, clear security, and you are inside.

I’ll walk you through the entrances, the metro stop most tour operators use, the meeting points that confuse people, and the days when your plan can fall apart. If you only want the ticket side, you can compare Vatican tickets online once you know where you are headed.

How to Go to Vatican City From Rome: The Short Answer

To go to Vatican City from Rome, ride Metro Line A to the Ottaviano stop and walk to the entrance for the attraction you want. St. Peter’s Square is the gate for the Basilica, while Viale Vaticano is the gate for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

That answer comes from how the operators on this page describe their own starting points. The Gray Line meeting point is in Piazza del Risorgimento, 400 meters from the Ottaviano metro stop on Line A. Another operator describes the same stop as a 10-minute walk to its office.

I’d treat Ottaviano as your anchor. From there, the walk splits into two short routes depending on whether you want the church or the museums.

Is Vatican City Inside Rome?

Vatican City is inside Rome, and Vatican City is an enclave within the city of Rome that works as a sovereign city-state ruled by the pope. Reaching it from a Rome hotel needs no train and no long transfer.

The ground itself helps explain the layout. The old Roman name for the area, the Ager Vaticanus, was a stretch of land on the west bank of the Tiber across from the city center, according to the same Wikipedia article. So from most central neighborhoods, your route crosses the river and heads toward the Vatican Hill.

Vatican City covers only 0.44 square kilometers, which is why one metro stop can serve most of it. That small size is also why the entrances matter so much. The Museums and the Basilica are on different sides of the walls, and mixing them up costs you time.

Which Vatican Entrance Do You Need?

The Vatican entrance you need depends on what you plan to see: St. Peter’s Square for the Basilica and Dome, Viale Vaticano for the Museums and Sistine Chapel. Each has its own queue and its own security check, so showing up at the wrong one means a long walk around the walls.

The table below pulls the starting points from the official pages and the tour meeting instructions for this guide.

What you want Where to go Notes

What Is the Best Way to Visit the Vatican From Central Rome?

The best way to visit the Vatican from central Rome is the metro to Ottaviano followed by a short walk, since every operator on this page treats that stop as its reference. A taxi also works if you start early or travel with luggage-free kids or limited mobility, but the sources I have give me no fare or journey time.

Here is how I’d decide:

  • Going for the Museums: Ride to Ottaviano, then follow the walls toward Viale Vaticano, or meet your tour host at the address on your voucher.
  • Going for the Basilica: Ride to Ottaviano and walk toward St. Peter’s Square, where the security checks begin.
  • Starting early: Be at your entrance before your slot opens, not just before your time. Lines form first at the Basilica.
  • Traveling with a stroller or wheelchair: Look at your operator’s access notes before you book. One traveler with a child in a wheelchair did the visit independently with an audio guide rather than with a guide.

For a second take on the route options from a central hotel, there is also a shorter breakdown at another route breakdown for Rome visitors. I wrote the two pages to answer slightly different questions, so read whichever matches your starting point.

Can You Walk From Rome to Vatican City?

You can walk from Rome to Vatican City, because no border town or transfer lies in between. The Vatican sits inside Rome, so your walk just ends at St. Peter’s Square or at the Museums wall.

I can’t give you a reliable walking time from the sources I have, since it depends on where you start. A better habit is to open a map, set your hotel as the start point, and check the route to St. Peter’s Square or Viale Vaticano. The two end points are far enough apart that you should choose before you leave.

The Basilica and the Museums are also not next to each other in the sense that matters. Many visitors plan the Museums and Sistine Chapel in the morning and walk to the Basilica afterward. If you try to do both in a rush, expect a long walk along the outside of the walls.

Can I Just Walk Into Vatican City?

Walking into Vatican City is possible at St. Peter’s Square and, in principle, the Basilica, though security comes first. The Museums work differently: they require a ticket for a timed visit and have a separate entrance.

The Basilica rules are the strictest part. For the Dome, security checks in St. Peter’s Square are mandatory for all visitors, and clothing suitable for a place of worship is required, with shoulders and knees covered. Only small personal bags are allowed, and the official FAQ notes that large backpacks and bulky luggage are not.

Entry to the Basilica is described by one tour listing as free of charge, but access is not guaranteed because of crowd control. That matches what one reviewer said: she arrived at 6:45 am, found a line already forming, and still got in quickly.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

If you want to skip the guesswork around tickets, I explain the options in how to go to the Vatican without tickets. My own advice is to book the Museums ahead and treat the Basilica as a free, early-morning stop.

How Do You Get a Ticket Once You Arrive in Vatican City?

A Vatican ticket is best bought before you travel, ideally a timed one for the Vatican Museums. Ticket desks do exist at the site, but walking up costs you a long wait and a rushed visit.

One reviewer on Google Maps put it plainly. They found online booking hard, arrived around 5 pm, waited 30 to 40 minutes for tickets, and then had to hurry through the galleries before closing time. I’d avoid that plan, because the Museums list a daily closing time and they close on Sundays.

If your goal is simply to get through the gate with less stress, a skip-the-line entry ticket is the straightforward choice. These listings from the tour data use different formats, so read what each includes before you pick. The first set below are the entry-ticket style options with no live guide:

The cheapest of these, the entrance ticket with a dedicated entrance, runs from the Viale Vaticano gate and shows your voucher to the guards at the entrance. The Gray Line option is escorted entry to the Museums, not a guided tour, so travelers should not expect commentary. A review of it put it simply: the guide walked the group all the way inside.

“Our guide was amazing! I did not get his name but he walked us all the way until we got inside the Vatican Museum! Gray Line tours”
Michelle, United States, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Skip-The-Ticket-Line Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Entry

I’d choose between them on one question: do you want to find the gate yourself, or do you want a host to meet you near the metro? If you want to see how every ticket type compares, you can see every ticket type side by side before you commit.

Where Do You Meet Your Tour When You Go to Vatican City?

Your tour meeting point is printed on your voucher, and most tours do not begin at the Vatican gate. Several operators run offices a few minutes away, and one states outright that St. Peter’s Square is not where you meet.

These are the ones that confuse people most:

  • Crown Tours: Their office is on Via Mocenigo 15, about 2 minutes from the Museums. The instructions tell you to head down the stairs across from the large white marble Museum exit.
  • Inside Out Italy: Check in at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, where a host escorts you to the entrance and through security.
  • Real Barcelona Tours listing: The meeting point is the local partner’s office. By metro, get off at Ottaviano, about a 10-minute walk away, and do not go to St. Peter’s Square.
  • Enjoy Rome: Meet your guide at the Tours About office.

The pattern is the same everywhere: arrive early enough to find the office and check in, not just early enough for the slot itself. For a guided option with the Basilica included, these three are the ones that mention it:

Ratings and prices are shown in each listing, and the Basilica part is optional on several of them. If you prefer a guided visit built around the Basilica and Dome, I’d choose a tour that names the Dome access in its inclusions, and then read the meeting instructions twice. For a fuller plan across the whole site, my guide on how to plan the whole visit covers the order of the sights.

What Days Should You Avoid When Visiting the Vatican?

The days to avoid at the Vatican include Sunday if the Museums and the Sistine Chapel are your priority, since Google Maps shows both as closed then. The Basilica is listed as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm, which makes it the Sunday option.

Here are the listed hours in one place:

  • Vatican Museums: Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm; Sunday, closed.
  • Sistine Chapel: Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm; Sunday, closed.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica: Every day, 7 am to 7:10 pm.

These are the hours shown on Maps, not a promise. The official site has a banner that switches between open and closed, and it links to opening hours and temporary closures, so check it the week you travel. Church events and holidays can change what is open.

I’d also build in a buffer for the security line. The Dome FAQ says everyone must pass the checks in St. Peter’s Square, and a reviewer reported a line at 6:45 am. So the best day is not just a day when the doors are open. It is a day when you arrive before the crowd.

If your trip is about prayer rather than sightseeing, my page on how to go to Mass at the Vatican covers that separate path.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City facts help you picture where you are headed, and each one below comes from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City:

  • Area: 0.44 km². It is small enough that the walk between sights is short, and the real delays are queues, not distance.
  • Founded: February 11, 1929. That is the inception date for the modern city-state, so the “country” you are visiting is under a century old.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Very few people live inside, which is why almost everyone you meet in the square is a visitor.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The listing covers the whole city-state, so the Basilica and Museums share one designation.
  • Currency: euro. Bring a card or euros for the same purchases you would make in Rome.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs at the gates are usually in Italian, so a translation app helps.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope rules the city-state as an absolute monarchy, per Wikipedia.

As Wikipedia puts it:

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”

Places near the Vatican entrances are easy to build a plan around, since the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica all share the same small area. One well-rated pizzeria also sits a short way outside the walls.

Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is listed as open 11 am to 11 pm every day, with a 4.7 rating from over 18,000 reviews. I’d use it as a post-visit stop, not a pre-visit one, because arriving hungry at your gate is a bad plan. Eating first also means you may run into your slot time.

The Museums are rated 4.6 on Google Maps from over 213,000 reviews, the Basilica 4.8, and the Sistine Chapel 4.7. Those are traveler ratings, not official ones, but they show how much traffic each place carries. More traffic means more reason to arrive early.

Your Plan for Getting From Rome to Vatican City

Getting from Rome to Vatican City works best with a short plan. Ride Metro Line A to Ottaviano, walk to the entrance that matches your goal, and book the Museums ahead.

  1. Decide what you want most: the Museums and Sistine Chapel, or the Basilica and Dome.
  2. Book a timed Museums slot, and confirm hours on the official Vatican Museums site.
  3. Read your voucher for the exact meeting point, since several operators sit a few minutes from the gate.
  4. Cover shoulders and knees, and carry only a small bag.
  5. Arrive before your slot, and go to the Basilica early if you want a short line.

Prices and hours change, so use the operator and official pages as your final check. When you are ready to book, book Vatican tickets online from the options above, and remember that we are an independent guide, not the official ticket office.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy tickets at the Vatican?

Yes, ticket desks exist, but waits can be long. One traveler who arrived around 5 pm reported waiting 30 to 40 minutes and then rushing through the galleries before closing. I'd reserve a timed ticket online and confirm current rules on the official Vatican Museums site.

How much does a train ticket from Rome to Vatican City cost?

I can't give a verified fare, because the brief for this guide has no official figure, and fares are set by the transport operators. You don't need a train at all for most trips. The Ottaviano stop on Metro Line A is the stop the tour operators on this page use as their reference point.

Can you walk from Vatican City to Rome?

Yes. Vatican City is an enclave inside the city of Rome, so there is no separate town to cross. Walking time depends on where in Rome you start, so check your own route on a map before you leave.

Can I just walk into Vatican City?

You can walk to St. Peter's Square, but security checks apply before you enter the Basilica or climb the Dome. The Museums need a ticket and entry through their own gate on Viale Vaticano. Shoulders and knees must be covered for the Basilica and Dome.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sunday if the Museums and Sistine Chapel are your goal, because Google Maps lists them as closed that day. The Basilica is listed as open every day. Check the official opening hours page for closures on holidays.
