Sistine Chapel Entrance

By Updated 11 min read

The Sistine Chapel entrance is the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, because the chapel has no separate ticket of its own. A single Vatican Museums ticket, €20 at the official price, covers both the museums and the chapel on the day it is issued.

Sistine Chapel entrance questions almost always have the same short answer: you walk in through the Vatican Museums. The chapel sits inside the Apostolic Palace, the pope’s official residence in Vatican City, and the Vatican Museums price page says the museums ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. There is no separate door or ticket for the chapel alone.

That simple fact causes most of the confusion I see. Visitors look for a “chapel gate” near St. Peter’s Square and end up on the wrong side of Vatican City. In this guide I’ll show you which door to use, what the ticket costs in dollars, when the doors open, and which booking option I’d pick for your situation.

Where Is the Sistine Chapel Entrance?

The Sistine Chapel entrance is the Vatican Museums door on Viale Vaticano, a short way north of St. Peter’s Square. The tour data names the museums entrance on Viale Vaticano as well, and Google Maps puts the Porta Musei Vaticani at Viale Vaticano 100 in Rome.

St. Peter’s Basilica is a different building with a different entrance, in Piazza San Pietro. Walking into the basilica does not get you into the chapel. For a street-level walkthrough, see where the Vatican Museums entrance sits on Viale Vaticano.

If you booked through GetYourGuide, the first tour below tells you to go directly to the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, show your ticket (paper or mobile) to the security guards, then scan it at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after the security check. Other tours use a meeting point away from the door, so read your voucher before you set off.

Sistine Chapel Access Through the Vatican Museums

Sistine Chapel access comes only through a visit to the museums first. The chapel belongs to the Vatican Museums collections, which count it among their sectors next to Raphael’s Rooms and the Pinacoteca.

That means the price of “getting into the chapel” is the price of a museums ticket. I’d plan your day around the whole visit, not around one room. If you want to understand what you’re walking toward, read about the chapel inside Vatican City before you go, and keep the broader Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel visit guide open as your planning base.

The official page adds one rule that matters: the ticket is valid only on the day it is issued, and tickets cannot be refunded. Pick your date carefully.

How Much Does Sistine Chapel Entrance Cost?

Sistine Chapel entrance costs €20.00 for the official full ticket without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Reduced tickets cost €10.00, and the “Skip the Line” booking on the official site adds €5.00 for reduced tickets.

Here are the official ticket types, with approximate dollar values at 1 EUR = 1.1165 USD. Prices and rules change, so confirm them on the official Vatican Museums ticket page before you pay.

Ticket type Official price Approx. USD
Full entry ticket €20.00 $22.33
Reduced ticket €10.00 $11.17
Reduced with “Skip the Line” booking €10.00 + €5.00 $16.75 total
Students €10.00 $11.17
Schools €5.00 $5.58
Schools with “Skip the Line” booking €5.00 + €2.00 $7.82 total

The official site is the only one I’d trust for online purchases. The museums warn that the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va, and that sites with similar domains may charge much more. If a page asks for far more than €20 without calling itself a tour, close it.

Official ticket or guided entry?

An official ticket is the cheapest way in, though you wait in the regular queue unless you book a slot. A third-party entry ticket costs more since it bundles a time slot and extra services. The GetYourGuide entry ticket listed below is $36.21 and includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and a booking fee, with an audio guide if you select that option. It has a 4.48 rating from 160,009 reviews.

My advice: if your dates are fixed and the official slots are sold out, a reputable third-party entry ticket is a sensible fallback. If you can book early on the official site, compare the totals first. You can see every ticket type side by side and decide from there.

What Time Does the Sistine Chapel Open and Close?

Sistine Chapel opening hours run from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, as the chapel follows the museums, with final entry at 6:00 p.m. According to the official days and hours page, visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time.

On the last Sunday of the month the hours are shorter: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m. That opening is free, and guided tours can be reserved.

The same page lists closed dates. Besides regular Sundays, the museums close on 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. The chapel also has two early closures listed: on 4 December and 18 December the Sistine Chapel closes at 6:00 p.m., with last entrance at 5:30 p.m. Check the official 2026-2027 calendar before you lock in a date.

I’d treat 6:00 p.m. as your real deadline, not 8:00 p.m. If you arrive at the final entry time, you will have little time left before the staff start clearing the halls.

Is Sistine Chapel Entrance Free?

Free Sistine Chapel entrance applies on the last Sunday of each month, subject to the official calendar. Admission is also free for children under 7 and for disabled visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, according to the museums’ ticket and price page.

Free tickets for disabled visitors and a companion cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and those visitors get priority skip-the-line entry. Bring documentation of the disability or the European Disability Card.

The free Sunday is a trade-off. You save the ticket price, but you will share the galleries with everyone else who had the same idea. As one reviewer wrote about the Sistine Chapel, “the crowds are brutal,” so I’d choose a paid weekday if crowds matter more to you than savings.

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”

How Do You Get In Quickly at the Door?

Getting in quickly means reaching the entrance ahead of your time slot, never after it. One GetYourGuide entry ticket warns you not to arrive outside your assigned slot, and the Through Eternity tour says its skip-the-line basilica entry is not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours in advance.

A traveler on a Google Maps review of the museum gate advised arriving 30 minutes before opening to avoid big queues. I’d borrow that idea: if you hold a morning slot, aim to be at the door early rather than on the dot.

“I loved the place I came there during my your of Angels and Demons, try to arrive 30 minutes before the opening to avoid big queues”
Francisco · Google Maps review about Porta Musei Vaticani

Guided options change the experience at the door. A skip-the-line ticket with a host means someone meets you near the entrance and walks you through security. A full guided tour puts a guide in front of you from the meeting point. If you’d rather not work out the queues yourself, book Vatican tickets online with an option that fits your group.

Here is how the entry-focused options compare:

  • Entry ticket with audio guide option: you go straight to the dedicated entrance and explore alone. Reviewers say timed entry makes access easier, though some wanted clearer directions to the correct queue.
  • Skip-the-line with host: the Inside Out Italy ticket has you check in at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, where a host escorts you to the museums entrance. Support often ends at the door, so don’t expect a guide inside.
  • Guided tour: the City Wonders tour meets at the steps opposite the entrance, next to Caffè Vaticano on the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.

One reviewer of the host-escorted ticket put it plainly:

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”

Which Sistine Chapel Entry Option Should You Book?

The best Sistine Chapel entry option depends on what you value most: price, speed, or storytelling. If price matters, buy the official €20 ticket. If speed matters, choose a skip-the-line entry ticket. If you want context for the frescoes, take a guided tour.

The three guided and bundled products below show the range, with prices as listed by the tour operators.

The City Wonders tour is $76.88, rated 4.63 from 10,439 reviews, and includes a guide, headsets and access to the chapel, plus St. Peter’s Basilica unless you pick a “No Basilica” option (the basilica is not accessible on Wednesday mornings). The official Vatican guide tour is $52.37 and includes the museums ticket and an official guide, but not the basilica. The Through Eternity small-group tour is $128.14 for three hours and includes a fast-track basilica entrance.

I’d book the official-guide tour if you want a guide at a middle price, and the small group if you value a quieter pace. For more on pairing the two buildings, see my notes on how the Vatican and the chapel fit into one day.

Sistine Chapel Entrance by the Numbers

Sistine Chapel entrance numbers below come from Wikidata and give you a picture of what waits past the door. Each figure links to its Wikidata entry for the Sistine Chapel.

  • Length: 40.9 m. That is the long axis you walk along once inside.
  • Width: 13.4 m. A narrow hall, which is why it feels crowded even with a few hundred people.
  • Height: 21 m. The ceiling is far above you, so tilt your head back.
  • Inception: 1473. Building began under Pope Sixtus IV, who gave the chapel its name.
  • Architect: Baccio Pontelli. The designer of the original Renaissance chapel.
  • Michelangelo’s ceiling: 40.93 m by 13.41 m. The fresco, begun in 1508, spreads across almost the whole vault.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km². The entire state is tiny, so short walking times between sights are normal.

Wikipedia adds that the ceiling was painted between 1508 and 1512 and that the chapel is the site of the papal conclave. The frescoes, in its words, are a “cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

“The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Italian: Soffitto della Cappella Sistina), painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

You can read more in the Wikipedia article on the Sistine Chapel, and the official history of the chapel explains that Julius II inaugurated Michelangelo’s ceiling with a solemn Mass on 1 November 1512.

What to Know Before You Go

Before you go, a few practical rules decide whether your entry runs smoothly. First, tickets are tied to one day and are non-refundable, so check the calendar and the early closures for the chapel before paying. Second, the chapel hours follow the museum hours, so a late arrival cuts into your time.

Third, keep your voucher and ID handy for the security check and the ticket scan. Fourth, if you plan to see St. Peter’s Basilica the same day, remember that it has its own entrance and that tour operators say basilica access can vary with crowd control. Google Maps lists the basilica as open 7 am to 7:10 pm.

If you’re also planning Rome sightseeing around your visit, my overview of the chapel in a Rome itinerary helps you place it between other stops. For all my guides on the chapel in one place, visit the Sistine Chapel topic hub.

Planning Your Sistine Chapel Entrance

Planning your Sistine Chapel entrance starts with the right door: the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, using one museums ticket that includes the chapel. I’d confirm the date on the official calendar, buy the official ticket if slots are open, and choose a skip-the-line or guided option if they are not.

Remember that the official price is €20, about $22.33, that final entry is 6:00 p.m. on regular days, and that the chapel can close early on a few dates. Once you know your ticket type, the entry ticket options page and the museums and chapel entry ticket guide will help you compare the details. I’m an independent guide, not the official ticket office, so always confirm final prices and hours on the Vatican Museums site.

Frequently asked questions

At what time does the Sistine Chapel close?

From Monday to Saturday the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, are open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, and the chapel closes early on a few dates such as 4 and 18 December at 6:00 p.m.

How much is the Sistine Chapel to enter?

The official full ticket is €20.00 without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Booking a skip-the-line slot online adds a fee, which the official page lists for reduced tickets as €5.

How to visit the Vatican?

Buy a Vatican Museums ticket on the official site or through a tour, then go to the entrance on Viale Vaticano at your time slot. The ticket is valid only on the day it is issued, and the Sistine Chapel is included.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

The museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, and on dates such as 1 January, 1 May and 25 December. The free last Sunday is open but draws large crowds, so I'd avoid it unless free entry matters most.

Is the Sistine Chapel entrance free?

Yes, on the last Sunday of each month, for children under 7 and for visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%. Free tickets for disabled visitors are issued at the desks in the entrance hall.
