Vaticaan Bezoeken Tickets

By Updated 13 min read

Vaticaan bezoeken tickets (tickets to visit the Vatican) start at €20.00 for a full-price Vatican Museums entry, about $22, and the only official online shop is tickets.museivaticani.va. Skip-the-line and guided options from partners cost more but save hours in the queue.

Vaticaan bezoeken tickets are the entry passes you need to see the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and the full adult price is €20.00 without online booking on the official Vatican Museums price page. At the ECB rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro, that is about $22. The phrase is Dutch (“visit the Vatican, tickets”), and this guide answers it in English with the prices, rules and booking steps you need.

I’m Giulia Romano, and my aim is simple: help you pick the right ticket the first time. Most problems I see come from three mistakes. People buy from a look-alike website, pick the wrong day, or assume one ticket covers everything inside Vatican City. It does not, and I’ll show you why.

Vaticaan Bezoeken Tickets Explained: What Is Actually for Sale

Vaticaan bezoeken tickets can mean three separate things, and each one follows its own ticket logic.

  • The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. This is the paid visit. The Vatican Museums ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day the ticket is issued.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica. Entry is free. A traveler’s review on Maps said that a free visit can be seen in about 40 minutes, and that you pay extra for the other locations.
  • The Scavi (excavations) under the Basilica. This is a separate booking with its own office, covered further down.

For a deeper breakdown of the main product, see my guide to Vatican Museum tickets. If you want every ticket category in one place, the tickets hub lists them.

One more point before prices. Vatican City is a tiny state inside Rome, and Wikipedia describes it as both the smallest country by area and the least populous. So there is no single “Vatican ticket”. You buy entry to individual sites, and you plan around them.

What Does a Vatican Visit Cost?

A Vatican visit costs €20.00 at full price for the Vatican Museums without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 on 2026-11-06 (ECB rates). Reduced tickets are €10.00 (about $11), and the Skip the Line booking on the official site adds €5.00 to a reduced ticket.

Here are the official numbers side by side. Prices come from the official price page and the Scavi entrance fee page. Always confirm them before you pay, since prices change.

Ticket Official price Approx. USD Notes
Full entry, Vatican Museums €20.00 $22 Without online booking
Reduced entry €10.00 $11 Without online booking
Reduced with Skip the Line €10.00 + €5.00 $11 + $6 Booked on the official site
Reduced, students €10.00 (+ €5.00 Skip the Line) $11 (+ $6) Up to and including age 25, with enrolment document
Reduced, schools €5.00 (+ €2.00 Skip the Line) $6 (+ $2) School groups
Scavi excavations €13.00 $15 Includes the guide, no reductions
Castel Gandolfo Papal Palace and Secret Garden €12.00 $13 Full entry

Two things stand out. First, the official page lists the full ticket at €20.00 “without online booking”, and it does not state the exact booking fee for a full ticket, so check the checkout screen for the final number. Second, the price on a partner site is usually higher than the official one, because it bundles a host, an audio guide, a guide or a different entry route.

What the partner prices look like

Partner vaticaan bezoeken tickets on GetYourGuide currently start at $32.31 for a skip-the-line ticket (rated 4.23 from 13,313 reviews) and climb to $109.87 for a guided small-group tour. In between sit a $36.21 entrance ticket and a $40.11 skip-the-line option, so I’d compare what is included before looking at price alone.

How Do You Get Into the Vatican With Vaticaan Bezoeken Tickets?

Getting into the Vatican Museums means buying a timed ticket, heading to the entrance on Viale Vaticano, clearing security and scanning your ticket at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. You can buy on the official site or through a partner. Either way, arrive for your slot and not before or after it.

The official Vatican Museums notice is blunt: the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va. It warns about sites with similar domains that may charge much higher prices. My rule is to type the address yourself instead of clicking an ad.

The simple booking path

The simple booking path takes five steps, in this order:

  1. Pick your date before anything else, because tickets are valid only on the day they are issued.
  2. Choose between the official site and a partner ticket, using the section below.
  3. Check the entry time. One partner states the ticket is valid only for the reserved time, and latecomers may lose skip-the-line access.
  4. Save the voucher on your phone and keep a paper copy as backup. One GetYourGuide ticket accepts both.
  5. Go to the entrance with ID. Names on the ticket may be checked.

Official site or partner ticket?

The official site is my pick when the date is close and you only want entry. I’d choose a partner when you want a host at the door, an audio guide or a bundled extra. The Online Vatican Tickets homepage compares the main options side by side if you want a quick view.

Remember what the official ticket does not do: it is not refundable. That matters when your flight plans are uncertain. If you want flexibility, read the free-cancellation terms on any partner ticket you consider before booking.

Vatican Visit Tickets: Skip-the-Line, Entry-Only or Guided?

Vatican visit tickets come in three styles: skip-the-line saves the most time, an entry-only partner ticket gives you freedom, and a guided tour gives you context. Which fits depends on how much you already know and how long you want to stand in queues.

Here is how the four tours I’d compare differ, based on the data in each listing:

  • Entry only, around $32 to $36. The entrance ticket (id 62214) lets you explore at your own pace and pick up an audio guide at a dedicated desk if you add one. It has no guide, and it does not include St. Peter’s Basilica or the dome.
  • Skip-the-line with a host, around $32 to $53. Several partners meet you near the entrance, hand over the ticket and escort you to the door. They do not guide you inside.
  • Skip-the-line with extras, about $40. One option can be upgraded to include reserved access to St. Peter’s Basilica, a Big Bus hop-on, hop-off tour or a Vatican Gardens minibus tour.
  • Guided small group, about $110. A professional guide leads a group of 20 maximum through the Museums, the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, with priority entrance and headsets.

My advice: if this is your first visit and you care about the art, book the guided group. If you already know what you want to see, take an entry-only skip-the-line ticket and use an audio guide.

Travelers on the tickets above are consistent about one thing. As Rares put it in a review:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

That review matches the pattern I see across the listings. The time saved at the door is the point of paying extra. For a wider look at city-wide options, my page on Vatican City tickets covers the other sites.

Is the Sistine Chapel Free With Vaticaan Bezoeken Tickets?

The Sistine Chapel is not free on a normal day, since it forms part of the Vatican Museums visit and you need a Museums ticket. The Museums become free on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the official calendar of museum openings and closures.

The official price page lists who else enters free:

  • Children below the age of 7.
  • Directors of museum institutions, managing boards and other bodies engaged in protecting archaeological, historic and artistic heritage.
  • Visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%. A companion enters free if the visitor is not self-sufficient.

Free tickets for disabled visitors cannot be booked online. They are issued at the “Special Permits” and “Welcome Desk” counters in the entrance hall after you show certification, and the visitor and companion get priority skip-the-line entry.

Should you use the free last Sunday?

The free last Sunday is an option I would think hard about before choosing. Free days draw crowds, and a review on Maps describes tickets as hard to get online and a 30 to 40 minute wait at the desk when the visitor turned up around 17:00. That visitor made it through the galleries before closing, but felt rushed.

The review is one person’s experience, and I’d treat it as a warning, not a rule. If you go on a free day, expect a long queue and confirm the date in the official calendar of openings and closures.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

What Is the Best Day to Visit Vatican City?

The best day to visit is a weekday morning when the Museums are open, as they run 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and are closed on Sunday, according to Maps data. Avoid Sunday for the Museums unless it is the free last Sunday, and check the official calendar for closures.

St. Peter’s Basilica is open 7 am to 7:10 pm every day on the same Maps listing. That helps with planning: you can see the Basilica on a Sunday and the Museums on another day. A traveler who arrived at 6:45 am found a line, but got in quickly.

Here is how I’d build a two-day plan:

  • Day one, Museums. Book the earliest slot you can get, then walk into the Sistine Chapel when you are still fresh.
  • Day two, Basilica and Scavi. Go to the Basilica early. If you booked the excavations, remember they run Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 and on Saturday from 9:00 to 14:00, per the Scavi office.

For exact public holidays I can’t give a date list from my data, so check the official calendar linked above before you lock in a day. And if you also want other tickets in the city on the same trip, my page on tickets for Rome and Italy shows what to combine.

Some partners ask you to collect your ticket at their own office first. One meets on Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, another at Via Germanico 8, and the guided option at Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono. The addresses differ by ticket, so read the meeting point of your own voucher and allow 15 minutes. That small detail causes more missed slots than anything else.

If you search for a ticket seller on the street, be careful. The official notice warns about websites that imitate the official one, and I’d extend the same caution to touts on the walk to the entrance. Buy ahead and arrive with the voucher on your phone.

Castel Gandolfo, the Scavi and Other Add-Ons

Castel Gandolfo and the Scavi are the two add-ons the official pages list besides the Museums. The Scavi excavations under St. Peter’s cost €13.00 (about $15), including the guide, with no price reductions for any reason. The Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo cost €12.00 for a full entry ticket (about $13).

The Scavi visit is a booking in its own right. You reserve through the Scavi office, which is run by the Fabbrica di San Pietro. I’d book it first, because it is the item you cannot improvise.

Castel Sant’Angelo is outside Vatican City but close to it. A partner entry ticket with a digital audio guide costs $25.07 and is rated 4.57 from 9,341 reviews. It is a good half-day pairing with the Basilica, since the castle’s rooftop terrace gives a view of the Rome skyline.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers gives you a few facts to size up what you are visiting. I took these from Wikidata and added what they mean for your plan.

  • Area: 0.44 km². You can cross the state on foot, so the hard part is the queues and not the distance.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. The modern state dates from the Lateran Treaty of that year, per Wikipedia.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. That explains the protection and the strict entry rules.
  • Population: 949 (2024). The visitors outnumber the residents on a busy day by a wide margin.
  • Currency: euro. All official prices on this page are in euros, and a card is easiest at the counters.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Expect Italian signage first, with English on the ticketing sites.

The head of state is Leo XIV according to the same entry. I mention it because audio guides and tours often describe the current papacy, and you will hear the name in the Basilica.

Which Tickets Should You Book?

Which tickets to book is a question of order: Scavi first if you want it, then the Museums slot, then anything flexible. My short answer is a skip-the-line Museums ticket with an audio guide, because it removes the biggest risk, which is the queue.

The vaticaan bezoeken tickets below are the ones I’d compare for a first visit. For the full comparison across ticket types, return to Online Vatican Tickets and use it as your shortlist.

As one traveler put it:

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”
Keri, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket

If you only want a quick answer on vaticaan bezoeken tickets: choose the official site for a simple entry, and a partner for a host, a guide or an extra. Both are legitimate. The mistake is a third option, an unknown seller with a look-alike address.

Your Vaticaan Bezoeken Tickets Checklist

Your vaticaan bezoeken tickets checklist puts the decisions in the order I’d make them. Pick the day, confirm the Museums are open, choose official or partner, and save the voucher before you travel. If you want more detail on any step, the Italy Vatican tickets page goes through the planning side, and the Vatican Rome tickets page covers the Rome logistics.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Vaticaan bezoeken tickets for the Museums are valid only on the day issued and cannot be refunded.
  • The only official online shop is tickets.museivaticani.va. Type it in yourself.
  • Reduced tickets need proof of entitlement. Students must be 25 or younger and enrolled this year.
  • The Museums are closed on Sunday except the free last Sunday, which is crowded.
  • Prices and hours change, so confirm them on the official price page before you pay.

Choose the ticket that fits how you like to travel, and your Vatican day becomes a good one. Shopping for vaticaan bezoeken tickets does not need to be stressful when you know which sellers are official and what each pass includes.

Frequently asked questions

Wat te doen in Vaticaan? (What is there to do in the Vatican?)

The two big visits are the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. The Basilica is open 7 am to 7:10 pm daily according to Maps data, and the Museums run 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday. You can add the Scavi excavations under the Basilica for €13.00 if you book ahead.

Is de Sixtijnse Kapel gratis? (Is the Sistine Chapel free?)

Not normally. Your Vatican Museums ticket includes the Sistine Chapel, and the full price is €20.00 without online booking. The Museums are free on the last Sunday of the month, for children below 7 and for some visitors with disabilities.

Are Vatican Museums tickets refundable?

No. The official Vatican Museums page states that tickets cannot be refunded and are valid only on the day they are issued. Check your date and time slot carefully before you pay.

Who can buy reduced Vatican tickets?

Students up to and including 25 years of age with a document from their school or university confirming enrolment for the current year can buy the reduced ticket. It costs €10.00, or €10.00 plus €5.00 with Skip the Line booking. Buying a reduced ticket without entitlement means paying the full price again.

Is St. Peter's Basilica free to enter?

The Basilica is free to enter, though entry is not guaranteed because crowd control can change access. One GetYourGuide ticket page says the same about its exclusions. Climbing the dome is a separate ticket.
