Why isn't April opened yet for Vatican tickets?

By Updated 12 min read

Why isn't April opened yet for Vatican tickets? Because the official ticket office releases dates on its own schedule, so a month that is not bookable yet is usually not released rather than sold out. Check the official calendar, then use a skip-the-line ticket from a reseller if you want a confirmed slot now.

Why isn’t April opened yet for Vatican tickets? In most cases the dates simply have not been released, and that is different from being sold out. Today is November 7, 2026, so April 2027 is still months away, and an empty calendar for that month is normal enough that I would not panic. The official site is the only place that can tell you for sure, so the first move is to check it and then decide whether to wait or book a skip-the-line option now.

I’ll walk you through what the missing dates really mean, what you can verify yourself, which April dates are closed, and how to protect your trip if you cannot wait.

Why isn’t April opened yet for Vatican tickets? The short answer

April not being open yet for Vatican tickets almost always comes down to release timing, not proof that the museums are full. The Vatican Museums sell timed tickets through one portal, and that portal controls when each date appears. The official prices page names https://tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for buying tickets online.

Here is what I can and cannot tell you. The official pages in my research do not publish a booking window, so I will not give you a “60 days” or “6 months” figure that I cannot back up. What I can say is that the ticket you buy is valid only on the day it is issued and cannot be refunded. That makes the date you choose a firm commitment.

So the practical answer is simple. If April is not showing, check back on the official portal, and do not trust a random site that claims to have April open when the official one does not. If you want to see every ticket type side by side, Vatican tickets online are explained on the main guide.

April Vatican Museums Tickets Not Released Yet: What You Can Check Today

April Vatican Museums tickets that have not been released yet can be diagnosed with three checks in about five minutes, and those tell you more than refreshing the page ever will. I do this in a fixed order so I do not waste time.

Why isn't April opened yet for Vatican tickets: visitors outside the Vatican Museums entrance waiting to enterBook aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36
  1. Open the official calendar. Go to the official ticket portal and look at the visit calendar. If earlier months show dates and April does not, the calendar has not rolled forward that far yet.
  2. Read the closure list. The official opening days and closures page lists closed days and links a 2026-2027 calendar of openings and closures. A date can look unavailable simply because the museums are shut that day.
  3. Test a nearby date. If a date in March shows slots and April shows none, you are dealing with release timing. If a date shows “sold out” on a day the museums are open, that is a different problem.

If the portal looks broken instead of empty, my guide to a ticket site that seems broken covers the usual causes. And if you see a single open day in April while the rest is blank, read why only one day is available in April, because it is a common pattern.

How Do Official Vatican Ticket Dates Work?

Official Vatican ticket dates work on timed, single-day, non-refundable tickets that come from one portal only. The prices page says the entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel solely on the day it is issued. It also warns that look-alike websites may charge significantly higher prices.

That scam warning matters most in months that are not open yet. When someone cannot find April on the official portal, a site with a similar domain is happy to “have” dates. My rule is to start from the official address, and only buy elsewhere from a named reseller that shows a clear meeting point and inclusions.

Two more rules shape the calendar. The museums open Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., according to the official hours page. And visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. If your slot is late in the day, you will have less time than the ticket suggests.

Are Vatican Tickets Sold Out or Just Not Released?

Vatican tickets that are sold out show a date with every slot taken, while tickets that are not released simply have no date on the calendar. The two look similar on screen, but they call for opposite responses, so learn to tell them apart.

  • The month is missing from the calendar: dates are not released yet. Check back, set a reminder, or consider a reseller ticket.
  • A date appears but every slot is gone: that day is sold out. Try the day before or after, or switch to a reseller.
  • A date is greyed out and the museums are closed: it is a closure or a Sunday. Check the closure list and pick another day.
  • The page errors out when you pick a date: it is a site or payment problem. Read the guide on a purchase that won’t process.

If your issue is a different kind of block, such as the checkout refusing you entirely, I have a separate guide for people asking why they can’t purchase tickets at all. For the broader picture of calendars that look empty, the page on Vatican tickets not bookable goes through every cause.

A related situation is when the site says no tickets are available in April but other months look fine. That is covered in the explainer on Vatican showing no tickets in April, which I would read next if the table above did not match what you see.

Which April Dates Are Closed or Special?

April closures and special dates at the Vatican are real, and they shift from year to year because Easter moves. The official list of closures includes April 6, which in 2026 is Easter Monday. The Vatican museums also close on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month, which is free.

For April 2027, Easter Sunday falls on March 28 and Easter Monday on March 29, according to the public holiday data for Italy. That means Easter itself lands in March, and April 2027 starts right after it. I would still check the official 2026-2027 closure calendar, because I do not want to guess which Easter-week days the Museums keep closed.

Other dates to know in April 2027, again from the same holiday data:

  • April 23: Saint George, listed as a Vatican holiday for the Holy Father’s name day.
  • April 25: Liberation Day, an Italian public holiday, and also the last Sunday of April 2027.

I can’t tell you from the sources I have whether April 23 changes the Museums’ hours, so verify it on the official calendar. If your trip touches the last Sunday, remember that free entry on the last Sunday comes with no online ticket, and crowds are the trade-off. The official hours page mentions guided tours on those mornings by reservation.

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

A traveler on one reservation page put the cost of queuing bluntly in the quote above. I would not plan a free-Sunday visit with small children or limited mobility unless you are ready for a long line.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows why one small state creates such tight demand for April dates. These come from Wikidata, and I have added what each means for you.

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you visit sits inside a tiny footprint, so the Museums, the Basilica and the Square are all close together.
  • Founded: February 11, 1929. The modern state is young, but its collections span thousands of years.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. That status is one reason access is managed so carefully.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. A very small resident population means almost every visitor in the Museums is a tourist.
  • Currency: euro. Prices on the official site are in euros, so your card may add a conversion fee.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope also appears in the dates you may see for audiences and ceremonies.

None of these numbers tells you when April opens. They do explain why a calendar that looks empty is not a sign that the site has forgotten you.

What Does a Vatican Museums Ticket Cost, and What Are the Booking Options?

Vatican Museums ticket costs start at 20 euros for the official full ticket without online booking, with reduced tickets from 10 euros. At the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on November 6, 2026, that is about $22.33 for the full ticket. Confirm every price on the official prices page, because they change.

Official ticket Without online booking With “Skip the Line” booking
Full entry 20 euros (about $22.33) Not listed on the page I checked
Reduced entry 10 euros (about $11.17) 10 + 5 euros (about $16.75)
Students up to 25 10 euros (about $11.17) 10 + 5 euros (about $16.75)
Schools 5 euros (about $5.58) 5 + 2 euros (about $7.82)

Students must carry a document showing enrollment for the current year, and the student ticket page warns that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must buy a new full ticket. The reduced ticket is not refunded.

If you already know you will arrive in April and cannot risk the wait for the official dates, I recommend a timed skip-the-line ticket from a reseller. I’d book one of these three, which you can compare below. If you want a full comparison of every option, book Vatican tickets from the main guide.

Prices on these cards are in dollars and include the reseller’s booking fee, which is why they sit above the official figure. I would pick the cheapest if you only want entry, and the one with the escort if you hate navigating alone.

Is Rome Busy in April, and What Is the Weather?

Rome in April is mild and sunny, which is exactly why travelers book it early. Open-Meteo’s archive for Vatican City over 2016-2025 shows an April average high of 19.6 C, an average low of 9.0 C, about 71 mm of rain and roughly 10.7 hours of sun per day, according to the climate data source.

Compare that with November, the month you are probably reading this in: an average high of 17.1 C, 165 mm of rain and 6.9 sunshine hours. April is drier and brighter, and that lines up with how many travelers want those dates.

I do not have a visitor count for April, so I will not tell you it is the busiest month. What I would say is that mild weather and a long outdoor queue are a bad combination only when you have no booking. With a timed slot, you walk past most of that line.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

The reviewer above arrived at about 5 p.m. and waited 30 to 40 minutes, then rushed through the galleries before closing. That is the cost of leaving it to chance, and it is my main reason to book a slot.

Where Do You Enter, and What Should You Watch Out For?

The Vatican Museums entrance sits on Viale Vaticano, and the ticket check happens at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after security. The tour listing for the standard entrance ticket tells you to go directly to the Viale Vaticano entrance, use the preferred entrance for your ticket type and scan at that desk.

Two practical warnings. First, arrive inside your slot, because tour listings say latecomers may not be admitted. One reseller asks you to arrive 15 minutes before the start. Second, check which meeting point your ticket uses. Some resellers meet you at an office, such as Via Germanico 8 or Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, before walking you to the entrance. That is fine, but it is not the official entrance, and the ticket in your hand belongs to that reseller, not the Museums.

If you are comparing a Museums ticket with a visit to the Basilica, remember that the St. Peter’s Basilica listing shows hours of 7 am to 7:10 pm daily, but the standard entrance ticket does not include it. Plan for the Basilica separately, and read why times are listed for tickets if the slot system confuses you.

Vatican Museums Tickets for April With a Guide

Vatican Museums tickets for April with a guide are the other route to a confirmed date if the official site stays closed and you want more than entry. The group tour from Gray Line I Love Rome lists a maximum group of 20, an official headset, a guide and priority entrance to the Sistine Chapel. It also lists the Raphael Rooms and the School of Athens among the highlights.

At about $110, it costs far more than an entry-only ticket. I would pick it for a first visit when you want the history explained, and skip it if you plan to wander at your own pace for four hours, as the reviewer I quoted earlier suggests you may want to.

Note the exclusions. The entry-only listings do not include a tour guide, and the dome of St. Peter’s is a separate ticket. Read the inclusions on each card so you do not pay for something you will not use.

Your Plan for April Vatican Tickets

Your plan for April Vatican tickets rests on one fact: the official portal controls release timing, and nothing on the official pages says a missing month is a problem. It has four steps.

  1. Check the official ticket portal today and note which months show dates.
  2. Read the closure calendar so you do not choose a closed day.
  3. If you must lock a date now, pick a skip-the-line ticket and read its meeting point twice.
  4. If you can wait, set a reminder to check the official site again, and never pay a look-alike site that claims to have April.

For the full set of ticket types and what each one includes, start with the guide to Vatican museum tickets, and browse the Vatican tickets topic hub for every other question about dates, prices and booking. When you are ready to compare options, Online Vatican Tickets keeps them side by side. We are an independent guide, not the official ticket office, so always confirm prices and hours on the official site before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vatican Museum free?

Yes, on the last Sunday of the month, as long as that day is not Easter Sunday, June 29, December 25, 26 or 31. Children under 7 and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% also enter free, according to the official prices page. April 2027 has its last Sunday on April 25.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Skip regular Sundays, because the Vatican Museums are closed on them, and check the official closure list for holidays such as April 6 in 2026. I would also avoid the free last Sunday if you hate crowds, since entry costs nothing that day. Always confirm the dates on the official calendar before you book.

Is Rome busy in April?

I do not have a visitor count for April, so I can't give you a number. What the data does show is mild weather, with an average high of 19.6 C and about 10.7 hours of sun a day. Mild weather and Easter timing are the usual reasons slots fill quickly.

Why are Vatican tickets so expensive?

The official full ticket is 20 euros without online booking, and a skip-the-line booking adds a fee on top for reduced tickets. Resellers charge more because they bundle a booking fee, a host, an audio guide or a guided tour. The tours on this page range from about $32 to about $110.

Can I just show up without a ticket?

Yes, the official price list shows an entry price without online booking, so you can buy at the door. The catch is the queue, and one reviewer on this page reported that a skip-the-line ticket saves at least 2-3 hours of waiting. For April, I would book ahead once dates appear.
