Vatican place overview: St. Peter's Basilica and the walls of Vatican City inside Rome

Vatican Place

By Updated 12 min read

Vatican place usually means Vatican City itself, a walled city-state of 0.44 square kilometers inside Rome, or one of its sights such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. You can visit the museums, the chapel and the basilica, and the museums and chapel close on Sundays while the basilica stays open.

Vatican place is a search phrase with two meanings, and I want to cover both. Some people want to know what kind of place Vatican City is, and others want a list of the places inside it that they can actually enter. This guide answers both, in the order a visitor’s questions usually arrive: what it is, where it is, what you can visit, and how to plan the day.

What Is the Vatican Place Everyone Talks About?

The Vatican place most people have in mind is Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe. It sits as an enclave within the city of Rome and serves as the administrative center of the Catholic Church, as Wikipedia’s entry on Vatican City describes.

It is also a real city-state with its own government, not just a district of Rome. The pope rules it as an absolute monarch, and it uses the euro, issues its own euro coins and is a de facto member of the Schengen Area, per the same article.

The modern state dates to the Lateran Treaty, signed on 11 February 1929. Before that, the pope had declared himself a “prisoner in the Vatican” after the Kingdom of Italy captured Rome in 1870. The treaty settled that dispute and created the state you can visit today.

Vatican Place Names and Sights Explained

Vatican place names and sights fall into three groups: the state itself, the buildings that make up the Holy See’s seat, and the museums you buy a ticket for. Knowing which is which keeps you from booking the wrong thing.

Vatican place overview: St. Peter's Basilica and the walls of Vatican City inside RomeBook aheadVatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica TourCheck availability · from $60

Wikipedia lists the main sites as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums. Vatican City as a whole is designated a World Heritage Site. Of these, three are open to ordinary visitors in a normal visit: the museums, the Sistine Chapel (which you reach through the museums) and the basilica.

I treat the Vatican place you visit as three separate stops with three separate queues. The museums and the chapel share one ticket and one entrance. The basilica has its own entrance at St. Peter’s Square, so it needs its own plan.

If you want a wider overview of the whole city-state, my Vatican overview goes through the history and the structure in one place, and the About Vatican City hub collects every page on the subject.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers comes down to a handful of figures, because the state is so small. They come from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City, and each one tells you something practical:

  • Area: 0.44 km². You can walk across it in minutes, so the time you spend is inside the buildings, not between them.
  • Inception: 1929-02-11. This is the date of the Lateran Treaty, the point where the modern state began.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. The whole city-state is protected, which is why rules on dress and behavior are strict.
  • Population: 949 (2024). The residents are a tiny group compared with the visitors who pass through.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, the same as in Rome.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and staff will mostly use Italian, with English help at visitor desks.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope is both the religious leader and the ruler of the state.

Note that Wikipedia’s prose gives a slightly different area (0.49 square kilometers) than Wikidata’s 0.44. Both describe the same tiny territory, and I use the Wikidata figure here for consistency.

Is Rome Part of the Vatican, or the Other Way Round?

Rome is not part of the Vatican, but Vatican City sits inside Rome. Wikipedia describes it as an enclave within the city of Rome, so Italian territory surrounds it completely.

For a visitor that has one practical consequence: you can walk from a Roman street into the Vatican place without a passport check at a normal visitor entrance, but you will pass airport-style security at the museums and the basilica. Bring a bag small enough to be searched quickly.

The name itself goes back to the Roman Republic. Wikipedia says “Vatican” comes from an Etruscan settlement called Vatica or Vaticum, in the area Romans called Ager Vaticanus, a marshy area on the west bank of the Tiber.

Where Is the Vatican Place on the Map?

The Vatican place on the map is found at coordinates 41.904, 12.453, on the west bank of the Tiber and just west of central Rome, according to Wikidata. The main visitor points lie about a ten-minute walk apart along the outer wall.

Here are the three anchor points I use when I brief a friend:

  • St. Peter’s Basilica opens onto Piazza San Pietro. The Maps listing for the basilica gives its address as Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano.
  • The Vatican Museums are entered from Viale Vaticano, according to the meeting details of the museum ticket. The street is on the north side, away from the square.
  • The Sistine Chapel is inside the museums. You do not enter it from the street, so a museum ticket is also your chapel ticket.

The two entrances are on different sides of the walls, so do not plan to pop between them. Treat them as two separate trips, and my page on the best place to buy Vatican tickets explains how to line up the museum slot first.

Which Places in the Vatican Can You Visit?

Places in the Vatican you can visit are the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. The Apostolic Palace and the Vatican Library belong to the Holy See’s working buildings, so I would not plan on them.

The table below uses the hours listed on the Maps pages for each place. Hours change, so confirm them on the Vatican Museums official site and the basilica’s official site before you go.

The most important detail for planning is the Sunday gap. The museums and the chapel close, while the basilica stays open. If your only free day is a Sunday, I would put the basilica first and book the museums for another day.

What Is Inside the Sistine Chapel?

The Sistine Chapel is both a working chapel and a painted room, and the official museums page explains why it matters. It takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480.

The wall frescoes of the 1480s were painted by a team that started with Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Cosimo Rosselli. Work on those frescoes began in 1481 and ended in 1482, and Sixtus IV consecrated the chapel on 15 August 1483.

Michelangelo came later. Julius II entrusted him with the ceiling in 1508, and the work finished in October 1512, when Julius II inaugurated the chapel with a solemn Mass on All Saints’ Day. The nine central panels show the Stories of Genesis, which is where the famous Creation of Adam appears.

This is the one Vatican place where I would not rush. Give yourself time in the galleries beforehand, because you walk a long route to get there and the room fills quickly.

Why Is It Called the Holy See, and Is It the Same Thing?

The Holy See and Vatican City are related but not identical. Wikipedia states that Vatican City is governed by the Holy See, the episcopal see of the Diocese of Rome and the central authority of the church worldwide. The Holy See is itself a sovereign entity under international law.

In practice, the Holy See is the government of the church and the one that holds diplomatic relations. It maintains them with 180 states and is an observer state of the United Nations, per Wikipedia. Vatican City is the territory it governs.

You do not need this distinction to buy a ticket, but it explains why official notices come from different offices. The museums, the basilica and the state’s own services each have their own websites, which is also why I send you to the museum site for hours and to the basilica site for the church.

Where Can You Eat Near the Vatican Place?

Eating near the Vatican place works best inside the museums for convenience, and outside the walls for a proper sit-down meal. The museums have a restaurant area, and the Caffetteria Centrale is annexed to the Self Service corner there. It suits a quick coffee at the bar or a slower breakfast at the table.

At lunch time, the same page says the café offers sandwiches, pizzas, fruit salads and desserts, and it names the Self Service and the Pizzeria as the other options. That is enough for a break in the middle of a long visit.

If you would rather leave the walls, Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is a pizza restaurant rated 4.7 from 18,643 reviews, with listed hours of 11 am to 11 pm every day. It is a short walk from the basilica side.

For a Vatican place that is so full of art, my rule is simple: eat before or after, not during. The queue for food at midday can cost you more time than the museum entrance did.

How to Book the Best Way to Enter Each Vatican Place

The best way to enter each Vatican place is a timed skip-the-line ticket booked in advance for the museums and the chapel. The basilica needs no ticket, so a ticket plan is really about the museums.

The entry-only options differ from the guided ones. The museum entrance ticket in the tours below includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and an audio guide if you select it, but not a guided tour, per its listing. It lists a price of $36.21 and a 4.48 rating from 160,009 reviews. The same listing says St. Peter’s Basilica is free but access is not guaranteed, and that the dome is not included.

My advice: if you know the collections already, take an entry ticket. If you want the galleries explained, take a guided tour. If the queue is your main worry, the Online Vatican Tickets compares every ticket type side by side.

One traveler summed up the entry-ticket experience as follows.

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”

Is the Vatican a Place of Worship or a Tourist Spot?

The Vatican as a place of worship and a tourist spot are one and the same, so behave as if you are in church. The Sistine Chapel is described by the museums page as a place whose paintings “render the truths expressed in the Holy Scriptures more understandable,” in the words of the homily quoted there. The basilica is a church, and the Wikipedia article calls the Holy See the central authority of the church worldwide.

That is why I tell people to cover shoulders and knees and keep their voices low. I would not rely on a last-minute purchase of a scarf at the gate, and I do not want you refused because of a dress code. Check the dress rules on the official sites before you go.

For visitors who want a quieter angle, the Vatican Gardens are a separate experience. The museums have offered a family tour called “Capturing Nature” for children between 6 and 12, and the official announcement says it runs in English and Italian and is fully accessible to people with sensory, motor and intellectual disabilities. After the tour you can visit the museums independently at no additional cost.

Can You Skip the Queue at the Basilica?

Skipping the queue at the basilica is possible, but only partly. The basilica is free, so the wait is security, not a ticket. One visitor wrote that they arrived at 6:45 am, found a line already there, and still got in very quickly.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

The same visitor said a free visit can show you most of the basilica in about 40 minutes and that other locations cost extra. That fits my own planning rule: give the basilica a short morning slot and save the afternoon for the museums.

If you want history explained rather than just walking through, a basilica tour with a guide covers the Pietà and the papal grottoes. The tour by Gyash Tours is listed at $17.77 with a 4.59 rating, but its listing excludes skip-the-line for the basilica, so read the details first. For more on sellers, see the best place to book Vatican tickets, and ask yourself which is the best place to buy Vatican tickets online? before you pay a reseller more than you need to.

Planning Your Visit to Every Vatican Place

Planning your visit to every Vatican place is easiest in three blocks: the basilica early, the museums with a timed ticket, and food outside the walls. Begin with the free stop while the line is short, then move to the ticketed one.

Here is the order I would use, based on the listed hours and the Sunday closure:

  1. Pick a day from Monday to Saturday so the museums and the chapel are open.
  2. Book the museum slot first, because that is the one that sells out. My guide to the best places to purchase Vatican tickets shows what to compare.
  3. Put the basilica in the morning, when the line is shortest, per the early-morning reviewer.
  4. Eat at the Caffetteria Centrale or leave the walls for a pizzeria.
  5. Check hours and closures on the official sites the day before.

Dollar prices on third-party listings are already in USD. For any official euro price, the ECB reference rates show about 1.1165 dollars per euro as of 2026-11-06, which is the rate I would use to estimate.

If you came here asking what kind of place the Vatican is, the short version is a tiny walled city-state inside Rome with three main stops for visitors. If you came for the list of places, you now have the three that matter, their listed hours and the order I would visit them. When you are ready to choose a ticket, the Online Vatican Tickets is where I compare them, and the best place to get tickets for Vatican City is the next page I would read.

It is both. Vatican City is officially the Vatican City State, a landlocked sovereign city-state and an enclave within Rome. With an area of 0.44 square kilometers per Wikidata, it is the smallest country by area.

What is the population of Vatican City?

Wikidata lists a population of 949 for 2024. Almost all residents are clergy and other church staff, so most people you meet inside the walls are visitors.

Can you provide a map of Vatican City?

Vatican City sits at about 41.904, 12.453 on the west bank of the Tiber. The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, St. Peter's Basilica opens onto Piazza San Pietro, and the Sistine Chapel is reached through the museums.

Can I visit St. Peter's Basilica for free?

Entry to the basilica is free, but access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it. One visitor reported that a free visit takes about 40 minutes to see most of it, and that paid extras cost more.

Are the Vatican Museums open on Sundays?

Maps data lists the museums and the Sistine Chapel as closed on Sundays and open 8 am to 8 pm the other days. Check the official museums site before you go, because opening days and hours change.
