Tickets Al Vaticano

By Updated 12 min read

Tickets al Vaticano for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel cost EUR 20 for a full ticket on the official site, plus a EUR 5 skip-the-line booking fee for reduced tickets. Only tickets.museivaticani.va sells them officially, and resellers add their own fees for fixed entry times and extras.

Tickets al Vaticano usually means one thing for a first-time visitor: an entry ticket to the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. I’ll walk you through what each option costs, which one I’d book, and how to avoid the look-alike sites that charge more. All euro prices below come from the official pages, so confirm them on the Vatican Museums ticket page before you pay.

Which Tickets Al Vaticano Can You Actually Buy?

Tickets al Vaticano come in several kinds: a full or reduced entry ticket to the Vatican Museums, a ticket to the Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo, and a ticket for the Scavi, the excavations under St. Peter’s. The Museums ticket is the one most visitors want because it includes the Sistine Chapel.

The official Prices and Tickets page lists these categories:

  • Full entry ticket: EUR 20.00 without online booking.
  • Reduced entry ticket: EUR 10.00 without online booking.
  • Reduced ticket for schools: EUR 5.00 without online booking.
  • Reduced ticket for students: EUR 10.00 without online booking.
  • Castel Gandolfo: EUR 12.00 for a full ticket to the Papal Palace and Secret Garden.

The Museums ticket is valid only on the day it is issued. That matters if you plan a split visit, because you cannot return the next morning on the same ticket.

St. Peter’s Basilica is a separate building. Its entry does not need a Museums ticket, and I cover that difference further down. If you want a broader view of the options, my main guide to Vatican Museum tickets compares every route into the Museums.

How Much Do Tickets Al Vaticano Cost in Dollars?

Tickets al Vaticano cost EUR 20 for a full Museums ticket, which works out to about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. The skip-the-line booking adds EUR 5 to reduced tickets, so a reduced ticket with that booking comes to EUR 15, about $17.

I converted each price with the ECB reference rates, where EUR 1 equals $1.1165:

Ticket Official price About in USD
Full entry, no online booking EUR 20.00 $22.33
Reduced entry, no online booking EUR 10.00 $11.17
Reduced entry with Skip the Line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 $16.75
Reduced schools, no online booking EUR 5.00 $5.58
Reduced schools with Skip the Line booking EUR 5.00 + 2.00 $7.81
Scavi excavations ticket, guide included EUR 13.00 $14.51
Castel Gandolfo full ticket EUR 12.00 $13.40

The official page lists the Skip the Line booking as an extra for the reduced categories, and the excerpt I have does not state a separate fee for a full ticket booked online. Check the live price at checkout. Prices change, so the official site is the final word.

Where Is the Safe Place to Buy Tickets Al Vaticano?

The safe place to buy tickets al Vaticano is the official portal at tickets.museivaticani.va. The Vatican Museums call it the only official site for buying tickets online and warn that look-alike domains may charge significantly higher prices.

My rule is simple. Type the address yourself or follow the link from the museum’s own page, and check the domain before entering card details. If a site shows a price far above EUR 20 with no mention of a reseller fee or a guide, close it.

Authorized resellers are a different thing from scam sites. They sell their own products, such as timed skip-the-line entry, an escort from a meeting point, an audio guide or a guided tour, and they say so in the listing. Their price is higher than the face value because it includes a booking fee and services.

Not sure which route to take? Where to buy Vatican tickets? is answered in full on my homepage, with every ticket type side by side. Once you have chosen, a booking through the tours below keeps the whole process in one place.

Tickets Al Vaticano: Official Site or Reseller?

Tickets al Vaticano from the official site or a reseller come down to this: I’d pick the official site for flexible dates and a tight budget, and a reseller for a guaranteed entry slot, a guide or help at the door. The ticket itself is the same entry to the same Museums; you are paying for convenience and services.

Here is how the two compare, using only what each listing states:

  • Official site: the lowest price, with the Museums ticket valid only on the day it is issued, and no refunds.
  • Entry-ticket resellers: an entrance that skips the ticket line, often with an audio guide option. The top-rated entry ticket in my list has 4.48 stars from 160,009 reviews, and it asks you to go to the dedicated entrance on Viale Vaticano.
  • Guided tours: a group guide and priority entrance for the Sistine Chapel. One tour caps its group at 20 people and includes official Vatican Museums headsets.

One reviewer from Romania gave the case for timed tickets bluntly:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

I read that as one traveler’s experience, not a guarantee, since waits change by season and day. It does match why I lean toward a fixed slot in busy months.

What Do You Get With a Vatican Museums Ticket?

A Vatican Museums ticket admits you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day of issue. It does not include a guide, a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica or the climb up the dome.

Reseller listings add detail. One entry ticket lists skip-the-ticket-line entry, an audio guide if you select that option, and the booking fee. Its exclusions are a guided tour, a ticket to St. Peter’s Basilica, and access to the dome. The Basilica is free of charge according to that listing, but access is not guaranteed and may vary because of crowd control.

Inside, the highlight is Michelangelo’s fresco “The Creation of Adam” in the Sistine Chapel. Another tour lists the Raphael Rooms and the School of Athens. I’d plan your route around those two stops first, then wander if you still have energy.

Plan for time. A reviewer of a skip-the-line ticket says to expect around four hours inside if you want to enjoy the Museums properly. Treat that as one traveler’s estimate.

Can You Get Tickets Al Vaticano for Free?

Free tickets al Vaticano exist, but only in four cases. The Vatican Museums list free entry on the last Sunday of the month, for children below age 7, for certain museum professionals, and for visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%.

The last-Sunday rule is subject to the calendar of museum openings and closures, so check it before you go. The Maps listing shows the Museums as closed on regular Sundays, which is why this exception matters.

Free tickets for disabled visitors cannot be booked online. They are issued with proof of invalidity at the “Special Permits” or “Welcome Desk” desks in the entrance hall. The visitor and a companion are guaranteed priority skip-the-line entry when the visitor is not self-sufficient.

My advice on the free Sunday is to expect crowds. I wouldn’t plan a first visit around it unless the price is the deciding factor.

Who Qualifies for Cheap or Reduced Tickets Al Vaticano?

Reduced tickets al Vaticano at EUR 10 go to students up to and including 25 years old who carry a school or university document confirming enrollment for the current year. School groups use a separate EUR 5 category.

Be careful here. The official page says that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must purchase a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is cancelled and cannot be refunded. Bring the proof with you.

For a cheapest-possible visit, I’d rank the options like this:

  1. Free entry, if you qualify or arrive on an open last Sunday.
  2. The reduced EUR 10 ticket, if you hold valid student proof.
  3. The full EUR 20 ticket from the official site.
  4. A reseller entry ticket, when saving time is worth the extra cost.

The same logic applies if you are comparing Vatican City tickets from several sellers: the face value is the floor, and the rest is service.

What Are the Opening Hours and Where Is the Entrance?

The Vatican Museums opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm, with Sundays closed apart from the last-Sunday exception above, according to the Maps listing. Opening times and closures change, so confirm them on the official calendar.

Entry is on Viale Vaticano for the preferred entrance used by one reseller, and that listing says to show your ticket to security, then scan it at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. Other resellers use meeting points on Via Germanico and Via Sebastiano Veniero, then escort you to the entrance.

Latecomers can lose their skip-the-line access, so build in a margin. One listing asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before the start time. If you want to know how people arrive in Rome and reach this area, my page on Vatican Rome tickets covers the planning side from the city end.

Do Tickets Al Vaticano Cover St. Peter’s Basilica and the Scavi?

Tickets al Vaticano do not cover St. Peter’s Basilica or the Scavi: the Museums ticket is for the Museums and Sistine Chapel only. St. Peter’s Basilica is a separate visit, and the Scavi, the excavations beneath it, has its own booking.

The Maps listing shows the Basilica open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm. A visitor who arrived at 6:45 am found a line but got in quickly:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

The Scavi ticket costs EUR 13.00 per person, about $14.51, with the guide contribution included, and the Excavations Office states that no reductions are given for any reason. Its office lists the entrance fee window as Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 14:00. Reserve through the official Scavi reservations page rather than a third party.

If you are choosing between several sites, the practical split is simple: the Museums need a timed or same-day ticket, the Basilica needs only security and patience, and the Scavi needs a reservation.

Tickets Al Vaticano by the Numbers

Tickets al Vaticano are easier to place in context with a few figures. I pulled them from Wikidata’s Vatican City record:

  • Area: 0.44 km². It is a tiny state, so everything you want to see is within walking distance.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, when the modern state was established.
  • Population: 949 in 2024, which makes the number of daily visitors far larger than the residents.
  • Currency: the euro, so you pay in euros even though you are in a separate state.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin, though tickets and signs are available in English.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which explains why entry is controlled.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00, the same as Rome.

If your itinerary treats the Vatican as part of a day in the capital, the page on tickets for Rome, Italy shows what else to line up around it.

Which Option Would I Book?

The option I would book for most first-time visitors is a timed skip-the-line entry ticket, with the guide decision made separately. It removes the biggest unknown, the queue, without locking you into a group pace.

Here is how I’d pick:

  • You want freedom: an entry ticket with an audio guide option, such as the top-rated listing above.
  • You want the story behind the art: a small-group guided tour with headsets, which lists the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel.
  • You want more than the Museums: an entry ticket with optional reserved access to St. Peter’s Basilica, a Big Bus ride or a Vatican Gardens minibus tour.
  • You want the lowest price: the official site, with the trade-offs I described.

A resale price is only a fair deal if you know what it includes, so read the inclusions and exclusions before you pay. Travelers on these listings say clearer information on entry times would help, so read the meeting instructions twice.

Mistakes to Avoid When Buying Tickets Al Vaticano

Mistakes when buying tickets al Vaticano that cost the most are paying a look-alike site, assuming a ticket is refundable, and buying a reduced ticket without proof. Each one has a clear fix.

  1. Check the domain. The official portal is tickets.museivaticani.va; the museum warns that similar domains may charge much more.
  2. Treat tickets as final. The official page says tickets cannot be refunded, so confirm the date before paying.
  3. Bring proof for reduced tickets. A student needs enrollment documents for the current year.
  4. Keep your slot. Resellers that use timed entry may not admit latecomers with skip-the-line access.
  5. Match the ticket to the place. A Museums ticket does not open the Basilica dome or the Scavi.

One more point on wording: people search with phrases like Italy Vatican tickets or Vatican City Rome tickets, and the products behind them are the same. Judge any seller by what the listing includes, not by its title.

Your Practical Next Steps for Tickets Al Vaticano

Your next steps for tickets al Vaticano run in a fixed order: pick your date, check the official calendar, then choose between the official site and a reseller. That order stops you from buying a non-refundable ticket for a day the Museums are closed.

If you want the cheapest route and you qualify, go official. If you want certainty about timing, book a skip-the-line entry ticket and arrive early. For more ticket guides, browse the full set of Vatican ticket guides, or compare every option on the homepage. Then you can spend your energy on the Sistine Chapel instead of the line.

What are the cheapest Vatican tickets?

The cheapest paid option is the reduced ticket at EUR 10 (about $11) without online booking, and it is limited to eligible visitors such as students up to 25. School groups pay EUR 5. Everyone else pays the full EUR 20.

Can I get a refund on Vatican tickets?

The official Vatican Museums page states that tickets cannot be refunded. Reduced tickets bought without entitlement are cancelled and you must buy a new one at the full rate.

Is the Vatican official website the only place to buy tickets?

The Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for online tickets and warn about look-alike domains with higher prices. Authorized resellers also sell entry tickets, usually with a booking fee and a fixed time slot.

Do tickets al Vaticano include St. Peter's Basilica?

No. The Museums ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only. Several resellers state that St. Peter's Basilica is free of charge but access is not guaranteed, and the dome needs a separate ticket.
