Vatican Gardens Ticket Price

By Updated 11 min read

Vatican Gardens ticket price is not listed as a separate fare on the official Vatican Museums price page, which shows a €20 full museum ticket (about $22) and lower reduced fares. Gardens visits happen with a tour guide, so confirm the exact fee on the official site or compare the booked options, such as a tour listed at $40.11.

Vatican Gardens ticket price is the first thing most visitors want to pin down before planning the green side of Vatican City, and the honest answer has two parts. The official Vatican Museums price page does not list a standalone fare for the Gardens, so I will not print a number I cannot source. What I can give you is every official fare that is published, converted to dollars, plus the booked options that include a Gardens visit.

What Is the Vatican Gardens Ticket Price in Dollars and Euros?

Vatican Gardens ticket price has no separate line on the official Vatican Museums price page. What it does show is a €20 full Vatican Museums ticket without online booking, worth about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (EUR 1 = USD 1.1165).

That museum fare is the only full-price number I can source, so I treat it as the anchor for budgeting. The Gardens are a different product. According to Wikipedia, the gardens are private grounds owned by the Pope, opened to the public in 2014, and visited with a tour guide. A guided visit has its own price, and the official Museums fare table does not break it out.

So the Vatican Gardens ticket price you actually pay depends on one choice: do you buy the combined option on the official site, or a booked tour that bundles the Gardens with other entry? I cover both below, with the numbers that are published.

Prices and hours change, so use the official ticket portal as the last check before you pay.

Here is how I read the situation. A visitor who sees “€20” on the official page may assume that is the Gardens fee, but it is the full museum fare. A visitor who sees a reseller listing at $40.11 may assume that is the Gardens fee, but it is the base ticket with the Gardens as an option. Keeping those two numbers apart is the whole trick to budgeting well, and it stops you from comparing prices that do not cover the same thing.

Vatican Gardens Entry Fees at a Glance

Vatican Gardens entry fees are not printed anywhere I can source, so the table below gathers the fares that the official pages do publish, with dollar equivalents at the ECB rate of 2026-11-06. The Gardens line says not listed, because I will not guess it.

Source for the euro figures: the official price page. The dollar column is my conversion, so your card may charge a slightly different amount.

Two details in that table save people money. First, the extra €5 for “Skip the Line” applies to the reduced ticket on the official site, and the page treats it as an add-on to the base fare. Second, the museum entry ticket entitles you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued only, and the page states that tickets cannot be refunded. Choose your date with care.

Do You Need Separate Tickets for the Vatican Gardens?

Separate tickets for the Vatican Gardens are what I would plan on. The official page says the museum entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel solely on the day it is issued, and it never mentions the Gardens.

Because the Gardens are visited with a guide, I treat them as their own reservation rather than a free extra. That matches what the booked listings show: one Rome ticket from a Vatican-area host is museum entry only, while the Touristation listing lists a Vatican Gardens Minibus Tour as a selectable option you add on top.

If you want both museums and gardens in one plan, read my guide to the combined museum and garden ticket option. If you only want the Gardens, my page on buying Vatican Gardens tickets online walks through the booking steps.

For the museum side of the trip, the Vatican Museums ticket guide explains every entry type and when each one makes sense.

Who Pays Less: Reduced and Free Entry Rules

Reduced and free entry rules on the official page apply to the Vatican Museums ticket, and I want to be clear that they are museum rules. I cannot confirm that they carry over to a Gardens visit, so check the Gardens booking page before you assume a discount.

Here is what the official museum page says:

  • Free entry on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the museum opening and closing calendar.
  • Free entry for children below the age of 7.
  • Free entry for visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, with a companion also free for visitors who are not self-sufficient. These tickets are issued at the desks in the entrance hall, not online.
  • Reduced ticket at €10 for students up to and including 25 years of age who hold a document from their school or university confirming current enrollment.

A warning I give every student: if you buy a reduced ticket without entitlement, the official page says you must buy a new ticket at the full rate and the reduced one is cancelled. Bring your enrollment proof.

The same logic applies to school and pilgrimage groups at Castel Gandolfo, where the official page asks for a letter on headed paper with the official stamp and signature, and the reduced ticket is granted to all group members up to a maximum of 30 people. Paperwork, not charm, decides who gets a reduction, so prepare it before the day.

If you want a broader view of how these fares compare, my guide to museum entry fees in euros lists them in one place.

Vatican Gardens Admission: Official Site or a Booked Tour?

Vatican Gardens admission comes down to two practical routes: reserve through the official ticket portal, or book a listing that bundles the Gardens or museum entry. I’d pick based on how much of the Vatican you want to cover in one day.

The booked listings below carry their own prices in dollars. The Touristation ticket is listed at $40.11 and offers the Vatican Gardens Minibus Tour as an option, along with a reserved St. Peter’s Basilica upgrade. The price shown is the base listing, so open the option menu to see what the Gardens add-on costs on your date.

The first listing has 8,954 reviews at a 4.23 rating. The second, the dedicated-entrance museum ticket, sits at $36.21 with a 4.48 rating from 160,009 reviews, but it excludes a guided tour and does not list the Gardens. Choose it if the Gardens are not a priority.

One reviewer who took the Gardens tour put the case for the bus plainly:

“I thoroughly recommend booking the gardens tour. Whilst you are on a bus and not walking, this is somewhat a blessing (if you’ll pardon the pun!) as the gardens are on steep hills. But they are very very beautiful and you get a full tour, including to the helicopter pad and railway station.”
Michael · Google Maps review about Gardens of Vatican City

That matches the layout. The gardens cover about 23 hectares and the highest point is 60 metres above sea level, per Wikipedia, so a seated minibus loop makes sense if you do not want to climb. For another angle on the same garden, see my notes on tickets for the Gardens of Vatican City.

If you are still comparing, I’d compare Vatican tickets side by side before you commit, because the same museum entry can cost very different amounts depending on what is bundled.

Where to Buy Without Overpaying

Buying without overpaying starts with tickets.museivaticani.va, which the Museums name as their only official site for online tickets. They also caution against lookalike domains that charge much higher prices.

My rule is simple: if the page you are on does not sit on that domain, it is a reseller. Resellers are not wrong to use, but then you are paying for a bundle, a host, or an audio guide, and you should know what you are buying.

The reseller listings in this brief make their extras explicit:

  • The museum ticket at $36.21 includes a booking fee and an optional audio guide, and you collect it at a dedicated desk inside the Museums.
  • The ticket at $32.31 includes a host who walks you to the entrance, and you should arrive 15 minutes early because the ticket is valid only for the reserved time.
  • The ticket at $53.48 includes a host and a check-in at an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, with a guide not included.
  • The guided option at $109.87 includes a small group of up to 20 people, headsets and a professional guide.

Time is the other cost. One traveler on the $32.31 ticket wrote:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

I would not treat one review as a measurement, but it matches why many visitors pay for timed entry. If you want to see the full spread of fares for the whole city, my page on Vatican ticket prices puts them in one table, and the topic hub, all Vatican ticket guides, links every ticket question I cover.

Vatican Gardens by the Numbers

Vatican Gardens by the numbers helps you judge what the price buys. These facts come from Wikidata, and each figure links to its record.

  • Area: the Gardens cover 23 hectares. Wear comfortable shoes, or take the bus option, because that is a lot of ground.
  • Founded: 1279, when Pope Nicholas III enclosed the area with walls, according to Wikipedia. This is a medieval garden with Renaissance redesign, not a modern park.
  • Elevation: the highest point is 60 m above sea level. Expect slopes, which is why many visitors prefer the minibus.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km², so the Gardens are about half of the whole state.
  • Population: 949 people in 2024. It is a working state, which explains why access is controlled.
  • Currency: the euro, so every official fare above is quoted in euros.

When Are the Gardens Open, and Where Do You Start?

Vatican Gardens opening hours are listed as 9 am to 6 pm Monday through Saturday, with Sunday closed, at Viale Vaticano, 00165 Rome. The Vatican Museums listing shows 8 am to 8 pm on the same days, also closed Sunday. Treat those hours as a guide only, since the official page points to a calendar of museum openings and closures for the exact day.

There is one Sunday exception for museums: the last Sunday of the month is free entry, subject to that calendar. If you want the Gardens on a Sunday, I would confirm directly with the official site first rather than assuming.

If you book a timed ticket through a reseller, the meeting point matters. The Museums listing says to go directly to the entrance on Viale Vaticano and scan your ticket at the box office labeled CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after the security check. The listing also asks you not to arrive outside your assigned time slot.

If your trip includes a second garden, the official page also sells a full ticket at €12.00, about $13.40, for the Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo, with a reduced fare of €6.00, about $6.70. That is a separate site outside Rome, so it is a different outing from the Vatican Gardens.

For a wider look at how Roman prices stack up, I keep a page on what Vatican City tickets cost in total that groups the fares the way a visitor would budget them.

Vatican Gardens Ticket Price: My Practical Wrap-Up

My practical wrap-up on the Vatican Gardens ticket price is simple. Take the €20 museum fare (about $22) as your baseline if you also want the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, then check the official site for the Gardens booking and compare it against a bundled listing around $40 that offers the Gardens Minibus Tour as an option.

Book the earliest slot you can, because tickets are tied to a date and are not refundable. Bring your student document if you rely on a reduction, and do not plan a Gardens day for a Sunday.

When you are ready to choose, you can book Vatican tickets online and compare the museum-only and guided options before you pay. Whatever you pick, confirm the final Gardens price on the official site on the day you book, since fares and hours can change.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have to pay to enter Vatican Gardens?

Yes, plan to pay, but the amount depends on how you book. The official Vatican Museums price page does not list a standalone Gardens fare, so check the official site before you buy. Booked tours that include the Gardens are listed with their own prices.

Is it worth going to the Vatican gardens?

I think so if you want the quieter, greener side of Vatican City. The gardens cover about 23 hectares, roughly half the state, and were laid out from the Renaissance and Baroque eras with fountains and sculptures. One reviewer on the Gardens tour called them very beautiful and said the bus ride helps on the steep hills.

Can anyone go to the Vatican gardens?

The gardens were opened to the public in 2014. Individuals and pre-formed groups of sixteen or more may visit, but only with a tour guide, so you cannot simply wander in.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays for the Gardens and the Museums, since the listed hours show both closed. The one exception on the official page is the last Sunday of the month, when museum entry is free subject to the opening calendar, so check it before you go.
