Vatican City calendar planning: St. Peter's Square and the dome seen on an open visiting day

Vatican City Calendar

By Updated 12 min read

The Vatican City calendar that matters for most visitors is the Vatican Museums schedule: open Monday to Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, and shut on a short list of feast days. Check the official closure list before you buy anything, because holidays and one-off closures can remove your preferred date.

Vatican City calendar questions usually come down to one thing: which day can I actually get in? For most visitors the answer sits in the Vatican Museums opening days and closures page, which lists the regular hours, the closed feast days and the temporary closures. I use it as my first stop before I choose a date for a trip.

The rest of this guide turns that official schedule into a plan you can use. I cover the weekly pattern, the feast days that close the museums, the free last Sunday, the holiday lists for 2026 and 2027, and what to do about papal events. For a wider picture of the city-state itself, my guide to Vatican City collects the related topics in one place.

What Is on the Vatican City Calendar for Visitors?

The Vatican City calendar for visitors is built from three layers: a weekly opening pattern, fixed feast-day closures, and one-off closures added during the year. The Vatican Museums publish all three, and the official page also links a PDF of museum openings and closures for 2026 to 2027.

The weekly pattern is simple. From Monday to Saturday the museums open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 8:00 p.m., and the last entry is at 6:00 p.m. Visitors are asked to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time, so a 6:00 p.m. entry gives you very little time inside. I would not plan to arrive after 4:00 p.m. if you want to see the Sistine Chapel properly.

Sundays are the exception. The museums are closed on Sundays, apart from the last Sunday of each month. The calendar also has a second kind of date: the days when a church feast, not the day of the week, decides whether doors open.

There is a third thing the calendar does not show well: how busy a day will be. A calendar tells you what is open, not what is calm. That is why I look at it together with the ticket slots, which I explain further down.

Which Days Are the Vatican Museums Closed?

The Vatican Museums are closed every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month, plus a fixed list of feast days: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. I took these dates from the official closure list, and the 6 April entry matches Easter Monday in 2026.

Here is how the closure dates line up with the Vatican public holidays in the brief’s holiday list. The holiday names come from the Nager.Date public holiday data for Vatican City.

Date Feast or holiday Museums
1 January Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God Closed
6 January Epiphany Closed
11 February Anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City Closed
19 March Saint Joseph’s Day Closed
6 April (2026) Easter Monday Closed
1 May Saint Joseph the Worker Closed
29 June Saint Peter and Saint Paul Closed
14 and 15 August Assumption Day (15 August) Closed
1 November All Saints Day Closed
8 December Immaculate Conception Closed
25 and 26 December Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day Closed

My advice is to read this table as a pattern, not as a full legal list. Easter moves, so the April date changes from year to year, and the official page can add new dates. Always trust the live page over any summary, including mine.

The practical lesson: never buy a ticket for a feast day without checking it first. Tickets for the museums cannot be refunded, according to the official prices and tickets page. A wrong date is an expensive mistake.

When Is the Free Last Sunday at the Vatican Museums?

The free last Sunday at the Vatican Museums means no entry fee, with doors open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and the final entry at 12:30 p.m. The opening is skipped if that Sunday coincides with Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

By that rule the last Sundays left in 2026 fall on 29 November and 27 December, but please confirm both on the official closure list, because I worked those dates out from the rule and not from a published schedule. Guided tours can be reserved for that day through the official Sunday reservation page.

Free does not mean easy. I would expect a long line and a crowded Sistine Chapel, and one reviewer who tried to get in late on a regular day described the rush well:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

If you want a calm visit, I would pay for a timed slot on a regular weekday instead. If budget is the main point, the free Sunday is real value, and the next section shows how much you save.

What Does Entry Cost on Other Days?

Entry on other days costs EUR 20.00 for the official full ticket without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on 2026-11-06. The reduced ticket is EUR 10.00, about $11.17, and the official “Skip the Line” booking adds EUR 5.00 to a reduced ticket, about $5.58.

Children below the age of 7 enter free, as do visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%. Prices change, so confirm them on the official page before you pay.

Which Holidays Appear on the Vatican Holiday Calendar?

The Vatican holiday calendar for 2026 holds 15 dates, running from 1 January (Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) to 26 December (St. Stephen’s Day). The 2027 list repeats the same 15 dates, with Easter Monday on 29 March instead of 6 April, according to the public holiday data.

Here are the ones that affect a trip most:

  • 1 and 6 January: New Year and Epiphany, both closure days at the museums.
  • 11 February: the anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City, on the closure list.
  • 19 March: Saint Joseph’s Day.
  • Easter Monday: 6 April 2026 and 29 March 2027. Easter Sunday itself is 5 April 2026 and 28 March 2027 on the Italian list.
  • 29 June: Saints Peter and Paul, a feast tied to the city’s two patron apostles.
  • 15 August: Assumption Day.
  • 1 November: All Saints Day, closed in Vatican City and a public holiday in Italy.
  • 8 December: the Immaculate Conception.
  • 25 and 26 December: Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day.

Italy has its own public holidays too, such as Liberation Day on 25 April and Republic Day on 2 June. These are not on the museum closure list, but I would expect more people in Rome around them. That is my own planning judgment, not a published figure.

One more date matters: the Vatican list includes the anniversary of the election of the pope on 13 March and the pope’s name day on 23 April. They are marked as Vatican holidays, but the museum closure list does not include them, so the museums stay on their normal schedule unless the official page says otherwise.

How Do Temporary Closures Change the Vatican City Calendar?

Temporary closures on the Vatican City calendar are brief, specific and easy to overlook, and they can upset a plan even when the date looks open. The official closures table currently lists several for the coming weeks:

  • 5 November: the New Wing is closed from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • 9 November: the Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi is closed from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with last entrance at 4:30 p.m.
  • 10 November: all Vatican Museums sectors are closed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
  • 4 December and 18 December: the Sistine Chapel is closed from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with last entrance at 5:30 p.m.
  • 7 December: the Castel Gandolfo museum complex is closed from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Two of these catch people out. A late-afternoon Sistine Chapel slot on 4 or 18 December would end early, and the 10 November early closure of all sectors affects the very first entry slot. I would book mid-morning on those days.

The page also changes over time, so treat this list as correct as of November 2026, not as a permanent schedule. If your trip is more than a few weeks away, check the page again closer to your date.

What Are the Opening Hours Day by Day?

Vatican opening hours run 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday for the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, which are closed on Sunday, while St. Peter’s Basilica is listed as open 7 am to 7:10 pm every day. Those hours come from the brief’s map data for the sights, and the official page remains the reference for the museums.

The difference matters when you build a day. The basilica is open on Sundays, so it is the natural choice when the museums are shut. I would pair a Sunday in Rome with the basilica and keep the museums for a weekday. The basilica’s own site is the place to confirm service times and any closures on liturgical days.

Remember that the Sistine Chapel is part of the museum route and follows the museum hours. One entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, and that entry cannot be moved to another day.

Where Do I Find Papal Liturgies and Audience Dates?

Papal liturgies and audience dates are announced by the Vatican on its own channels rather than on the museum closure list, so I send readers to the official Vatican website. I do not publish audience dates on this page, because dates I cannot source would only get you into trouble.

What I can say is how the two calendars interact. A papal event can change crowds in St. Peter’s Square and around the basilica, even when the museums run their usual hours. The current head of state of Vatican City is Leo XIV, according to Wikidata.

If a papal event is the reason for your trip, plan the museums for a different day. Combining both on one morning is possible but tiring, and I would not do it with children or on a tight schedule.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows why the schedule is built the way it is, since a few facts about the state explain a lot. Every figure below comes from Wikidata.

Wikipedia describes the state like this:

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”

How Should I Book Around the Vatican City Calendar?

Booking around the Vatican City calendar starts once you have an open date: reserve a timed ticket as early as you can, because the date is the one part of the plan you cannot fix later. If you want to see every ticket type side by side, my page on Vatican tickets compares them and shows which suits a first-time visit.

The official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va, and the museums warn about copycat websites that charge much higher prices. I am an independent guide and not the official ticket office. The tours below are partner listings on GetYourGuide, and their prices in the brief run from about $32 to about $71, depending on whether a guide is included.

For a first visit I would take an entry ticket only if you are comfortable walking the galleries alone, and a guided option if you want the Sistine Chapel and the museums explained. Guided options in the brief include St. Peter’s Basilica as a selectable extra, so read the inclusions before you pick one.

If you are still comparing dates, my page on the official Vatican Museums booking calendar explains how the booking side works. Is the date you want actually bookable? That is the question to settle before you pay.

What Should I Check Before I Pay?

Checks before you pay come down to four for me. First, the day is not a Sunday and not on the feast-day list. Second, no temporary closure touches my time slot. Third, the ticket is for the right date, because it is valid only on the day it is issued. Fourth, the seller is the official portal or a clearly labeled partner.

That takes five minutes and prevents almost every calendar mistake I know of.

Planning Wrap-Up: Using the Vatican City Calendar Well

The Vatican City calendar works best as a filter rather than a list to memorize. Start with the museum hours, remove Sundays and the feast days, check the temporary closures, and only then pick your date and ticket. If your trip falls near the last Sunday of the month, decide whether the free entry is worth the crowds.

For the wider picture of how the state works, the Vatican overview is the place to start. My full page list shows the other guides on this site, and about this guide explains who writes it. When you are ready to choose a ticket, see the official booking calendar explained once more, then lock in your slot and keep the official closure page open until you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a papal audience calendar I can follow?

Papal audiences and liturgical celebrations are scheduled separately from museum hours, and the dates are announced by the Vatican. I do not list audience dates here because they are not in my sources, so check the official Vatican website before you plan around one.

Is there a Vatican Mass schedule I can use?

Services at St. Peter's Basilica and other churches run on their own timetable, which is separate from the museum calendar. For a visit, remember that the basilica is listed as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm, and confirm service times on the basilica's official site.

Does the Vatican calendar show the same closures every year?

The list of closed feast days is fixed by date, such as 1 January or 25 December, but a few entries move with the year. Easter Monday is one example: it falls on 6 April in 2026 and 29 March in 2027, so I always recheck the official museum calendar.

What are the public holidays in Vatican City in 2027?

The 2027 list includes 1 January, 6 January, 11 February, 13 March, 19 March, 29 March (Easter Monday), 23 April, 1 May, 29 June, 15 August, 8 September, 1 November, 8 December, 25 December and 26 December. Not every holiday closes the museums, so check the museum closure list.

Can I enter the Vatican Museums on a Sunday?

Only on the last Sunday of the month, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free. Other Sundays the museums are closed, and the last-Sunday opening is skipped when it falls on certain feast days.
