Going to the Vatican

By Updated 12 min read

Going to the Vatican means visiting an independent city-state inside Rome, and you can simply walk in to St. Peter's Basilica for free. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel need a timed ticket, so book it before you travel.

Going to the Vatican is simpler than it sounds once you know that you are really visiting three things: the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the small state that holds them. Vatican City is a landlocked city-state inside Rome, so you reach it on foot or by metro, with no border checks to plan for. What needs planning is the timed Museums entry, because that is where most visitors lose hours.

I wrote this page as Giulia Romano, as a trip plan for a first visit. It covers how to get there, what costs money and what does not, which days work, and which ticket style fits you. Prices and hours change, so I point you to the official pages for the final check. If a booking attempt stalls, the Vatican online ticket troubleshooting page walks through fixes.

How Do You Plan Going to the Vatican Step by Step?

Going to the Vatican step by step starts with reserving a timed Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel slot, then building the free St. Peter’s Basilica visit around it. The Museums run on time slots, and the Basilica does not, so the Museums slot is the anchor of your day.

Here is the order I’d follow:

  1. Pick your day. Check the official opening hours and temporary closures before anything else.
  2. Choose your ticket style. Self-guided entry gives you freedom. A guided tour gives you stories and a shorter learning curve.
  3. Book a slot. If the first booking attempt fails, I explain what to do when the online ticket will not go through.
  4. Plan the Basilica. It is a separate stop and a separate line, so treat it as its own visit.
  5. Eat outside the walls. There are plenty of options in the streets nearby.

If you only want an overview of the main ticket types before choosing, see every ticket type side by side and come back here for the planning details.

Visiting Vatican City: What You Can Actually See

Visiting Vatican City mostly comes down to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica, which together cover most of what travelers come for. The official Vatican Museums site lists galleries such as the Pio Clementino Museum, the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, the Pinacoteca and Raphael’s Rooms, plus the Sistine Chapel and the Borgia Apartment.

Here is how I’d think about each stop:

  • Vatican Museums. A long route through many collections. One ticket option on the booking page promises more than 20,000 works of art by painters like Michelangelo and Raphael.
  • Sistine Chapel. The route ends here, and it is the room most visitors have in mind. It is where Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam is the highlight on the ceiling.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica. A church you can enter without a ticket, with Michelangelo’s Pietà inside. Tours also mention Bernini’s Baldachin.

You don’t have to see everything. I’d choose two or three galleries that interest you, then follow the route to the Sistine Chapel.

One traveler on Google Maps summed up the visit this way, and it matches what the data shows about the Museums:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

Can I Walk to the Vatican?

You can walk to the Vatican because it lies within Rome and has no border crossing. The Vatican sits on the west bank of the Tiber, and its coordinates are about 41.904, 12.453 on Wikidata.

The metro is the simplest way for most people. One tour operator’s meeting instructions say to take Line A and get off at Ottaviano, then walk about 10 minutes; those same instructions warn that St. Peter’s Square is not their meeting point. That is a good reminder to read your voucher before you leave.

Two entrances matter:

  • Vatican Museums: the entrance is on Viale Vaticano. Show your ticket at security, then scan it at the online-and-groups box office.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica: the entrance is from St. Peter’s Square, on the Piazza San Pietro side.

The two sites are in different spots, so don’t assume you can step from one into the other. I’d leave a buffer between them for walking and security.

Can You Enter Vatican City for Free?

Entering Vatican City is free, and that includes St. Peter’s Basilica. The Museums cost money, and a skip-the-line tour listing even notes that Basilica access is free of charge but not guaranteed, since crowd control can change it.

That distinction saves people money. Here is how the main stops compare:

  • St. Peter’s Basilica: free entry, though access can change with crowd control. The Google Maps listing shows it open daily, 7 am to 7:10 pm.
  • Vatican Museums: timed ticket required. The listing shows Monday to Saturday, 8 am to 8 pm, and Sunday closed.
  • Sistine Chapel: included on the Museums route, with the same hours and the same Sunday closure.
  • Basilica dome: a separate ticket, and one tour listing names dome access among the things a basic entry ticket leaves out.

One reviewer wrote that a free visit to the Basilica can be seen in about 40 minutes, and that other locations cost extra:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows, through these figures from Wikidata, why a visit feels unlike any other sightseeing day in Rome:

  • Area: 0.44 km². It is tiny, which is why the Museums, the Basilica and the square all sit so close together. You can browse more pages like this in the full page index.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. That is the date the modern state was set up.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Almost everyone you see inside is a visitor.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The collections are protected, which is part of why the rules are strict.
  • Currency: the euro. You pay for coffee in euros, as in Rome.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Expect signs in Italian.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope is the head of this absolute monarchy.

As Wikipedia puts it in its opening line:

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”

What Days Should You Avoid When Going to the Vatican?

The day to avoid when going to the Vatican is Sunday if you want the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, since the Google Maps listing shows both as closed then. The Basilica is listed as open every day, so Sunday is only a problem for the art.

Beyond Sunday, I can’t give you a safe list of “bad days” from my data. Closures for religious events and holidays are posted on the official Vatican Museums hours page, and that is the page to trust. Check it again two or three days before you go.

For crowds, my advice is a judgment call rather than a statistic. Early slots mean you reach the galleries before the day fills up, and a reviewer who arrived at 6:45 am at the Basilica said there was already a line but that they got in quickly. Late arrivals can be rushed: one Museums reviewer arrived around 5 pm and had to hurry through the galleries before closing.

Trip to the Vatican: Tickets, Tours and Prices Compared

A trip to the Vatican goes better with a booked slot than with turning up and hoping, since a timed ticket lets you build the whole day around one entry time. Based on the tour data I have, self-guided entry tickets cost less and guided tours cost more.

Option Price (USD) Rating Time Good for
Entry ticket with audio guide option (Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket) $36.21 4.48 Own pace Independent visitors
Skip-the-line entry with a host (Inside Out Italy) $53.48 4.42 2.5 to 3 hours People who want help at check-in
Museums, Chapel and Basilica tour (Enjoy Rome) $60.17 4.27 2 to 3 hours Visitors who want a guide
Guided tour with optional Basilica and dome (Crown Tours) $71.31 4.65 2 to 4 hours First-timers who want stories

Prices are what the booking pages show now and can change, so confirm them at checkout. If you want the lowest-cost route, start with the entry ticket; if you want a guide’s explanation, the tours below are the ones I’d compare first.

Self-guided or guided: how I’d choose

A self-guided visit suits you if you already know what you want to see, or if you are traveling with someone who needs a flexible pace. One traveler used an audio guide because a child was in a wheelchair, and still saw most of the sights:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

I’d go guided if this is your first time and you want the collections explained. Reviewers praise guides who bring the Museums and the Sistine Chapel to life, and that is where a guide earns the extra cost.

Read the inclusions before you pay. Several listings say the Basilica is optional or excluded, and one explicitly lists a guided tour of the Basilica as not included. Reviewers of some tours asked for clearer details about St. Peter’s, which is exactly the point to check.

Student tickets

Student tickets work like this on the official site: the reduced student ticket is for students up to and including 25 years of age with a document from their school or university confirming enrollment for the current year. If you buy it without being entitled, you must buy a new full-rate ticket, and the reduced one cannot be refunded.

What to expect at the door

At the door, expect a security check at the Museums entrance. Tour instructions describe showing your ticket (paper or mobile voucher) to the guards first and scanning it at the box office afterward. Arrive within your assigned slot, because one operator states that the ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line entry.

That same operator asks guests to arrive 15 minutes before the start time, which is a sensible habit for any booking. I’d also charge your phone before you leave, since a mobile voucher may be what gets you through the door.

Reading the fine print on a booking

The fine print on a booking matters, so compare what each listing says it includes before you pay. The entry ticket I mention above lists a booking fee and, if you select the option, an audio guide, while it leaves out a guided tour and the Basilica dome. The Inside Out Italy listing includes a host who meets you at an office and walks you to the entrance, but reviewers note that support often ends there.

Meeting points differ too. One listing sends you to Via Germanico, another to Via Sebastiano Veniero, and a third to Via Mocenigo. Save the address on your phone so you are not searching for it with a time slot ticking.

Where to Eat and What Is Nearby

Where to eat near the Vatican is outside the walls, where the surrounding streets have ordinary Roman restaurants and the walk back is short. One place from my Maps data is Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci, rated 4.7 from more than 18,000 reviews and open from 11 am to 11 pm daily.

A simple rhythm works well. Do the Museums in the morning, take a break and a meal, then visit the Basilica when you have energy left for a church of that size. If you book a tour that meets at a local office, leave a few extra minutes to find it, because those offices are on side streets such as Via Mocenigo and Via Sebastiano Veniero.

Going to the Vatican: Your Practical Wrap-Up

Going to the Vatican works out best if you settle three things beforehand: the day, the ticket style and the order of your stops. My recommendation is a timed Museums and Sistine Chapel entry in the morning, with St. Peter’s Basilica as the free add-on.

Here is the short version:

  • Skip Sundays for the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
  • Treat the Basilica as a separate, free stop with its own line.
  • Read your voucher for the exact meeting point, because the offices sit away from the main squares.
  • Confirm hours and rules on the official Vatican Museums website before you leave.

If you are still choosing between ticket types, start with the ticket options here. For the bigger picture of what the state is and how it runs, my guide to the Vatican is the next read, and the About Vatican City hub collects the rest. When you are ready to book, the tours below are the options I’d compare first.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to visit Vatican?

I'd book a timed Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel ticket ahead of time and add St. Peter's Basilica as a free second stop. If you want context for the art, pick a guided tour; if you like your own pace, an entry ticket with an audio guide works well.

Can I wear jeans to Vatican?

The Vatican sets its own dress rules for the Basilica and the Museums, and they can be enforced at the door. Check the official Vatican Museums website before you go, and choose clothes you would be comfortable wearing inside a working church.

Can you take photos in the Vatican?

Rules differ from room to room, and the Sistine Chapel is the place where staff are strictest. Follow the signs and the guards inside, and read the visitor rules on the official Vatican Museums website before your visit.

Is there a McDonald's inside the Vatican?

I can't confirm a fast-food chain inside Vatican City. The easy fix is to eat just outside the walls in Rome; Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is open from 11 am to 11 pm every day according to its Google Maps listing.
