Petersdom

By Updated 13 min read

Petersdom is the German name for St. Peter's Basilica, the papal church inside Vatican City in Rome. A map listing shows it open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm, and a museums-ticket listing describes entry as free of charge, though access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it.

Petersdom is the German name for St. Peter’s Basilica, the papal church that rises over St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. English speakers, Italians and Germans all mean the same building, even when a map, a tour listing or a guidebook uses a different spelling. This page explains what the Petersdom is, where it sits, when it opens, how entry works and which tours include it.

I’m Giulia, and I write this guide as an independent planner, not as the ticket office. My aim is to save you from the usual mix-ups: the wrong name, the wrong entrance and a museums ticket that quietly leaves the basilica out.

What Is the Petersdom?

The Petersdom is St. Peter’s Basilica, a headline attraction of Vatican City and the most famous church in the Catholic world. Wikipedia’s article on Vatican City puts St. Peter’s Basilica at the top of its list of religious and cultural sites in the state, ahead of the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums.

The same article gives the background that explains why the church is where it is. Catholic theology holds that Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus and considered the first pope, was crucified on Vatican Hill in Rome during the 1st century AD. The Petersdom stands in that area today, which is why pilgrims and sightseers both treat it as a destination in its own right.

On Google Maps the church is listed as “Saint Peter’s Basilica” in the category Basilica, with a rating of 4.8 from 185,703 reviews. That is the highest score among the Vatican places I track on this site, ahead of the Sistine Chapel at 4.7 and the Vatican Museums at 4.6. It tells you the church satisfies most people who go in.

For the full picture of the church itself, my main guide to St. Peter’s Basilica goes deeper. Treat this page as the Petersdom entry point for readers who searched by the German name.

Why Do People Say Petersdom Instead of St. Peter’s Basilica?

People say Petersdom because that is how German names the church, while Italian says “Basilica di San Pietro” and English says “St. Peter’s Basilica.”

The mix of names causes real planning trouble. A ticket listing might say “Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica,” a map pin might say “Saint Peter’s Basilica,” and a German guidebook might say “Petersdom.” All three point to the same church on the western side of the museums complex. If you see one of these names on a booking, you are looking at the same building.

One more naming point matters for sorting out your day. The Petersdom is not the same place as the Vatican Museums or the Sistine Chapel. They are separate visits with separate entrances, and I explain the difference in the section on tours below.

Where Is the Petersdom?

The Petersdom is located in Vatican City, at Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano, per its Google Maps listing. To get to the church you cross St. Peter’s Square, and the museums are not on the route.

The state around it is tiny. Wikidata gives Vatican City an area of 0.44 km², so the Petersdom, the square and the museums all sit within a short walk of each other. Because the museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, one tour listing tells visitors to go directly to that entrance, and that is not the same side as the square.

If you want a plain answer about the location, I wrote a separate page on where St. Peter’s Basilica is, including how it relates to Rome. In short, you cross an Italian city to reach a separate country, then walk a few minutes inside it.

Petersdom by the Numbers

Petersdom figures below are taken from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City, the state the Petersdom belongs to. They are here to help you plan, and I give no number that is missing from the record.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The whole state is smaller than many city parks, so the walk from the square to the museums is short.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. The Wikipedia article ties this to the Lateran Treaty, which settled the “Roman question.”
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Very few people live here, so you are visiting a working state, not a theme park.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The designation covers the state as a whole.
  • Currency: euro. Bring a card or cash in euros for cafes and shops.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Do not expect German or English signs everywhere, though tour staff speak several languages.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00. Match your phone’s clock to this when you read slot times.

The head of state is listed there as Leo XIV, which explains why the area around the square is also a place of ceremony and why some days differ from the usual pattern.

Petersdom Opening Hours and Best Time to Go

Petersdom opening hours on Google Maps run every day from 7 am to 7:10 pm, Sunday included. That gives it more flexibility than the museums, which the same listings show as closed on Sunday and open 8 am to 8 pm on the other six days.

In the same listings, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel both show 8 am to 8 pm from Monday to Saturday and “Closed” on Sunday. The basilica is the only one of the three that stays open all seven days.

Hours on a map listing are a starting point. They can shift with religious services, ceremonies and the season, so use the basilica’s official website to confirm before you go. For the museums, my page on Vatican Museum opening hours covers the schedule and closures in more detail.

Timing is where a smart plan pays off. A reviewer of the basilica wrote this about an early start:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That traveler arrived at 6:45 am and found a line already, but got in quickly. My advice follows the same logic: go as soon as the doors open and leave the museums for later in the morning, since they only open at 8 am and are closed Sunday. If your trip falls on a Sunday, the Petersdom is the one big Vatican sight you can still plan around.

Is the Petersdom Free to Enter?

Entry to the Petersdom is free, as a Vatican Museums entry-ticket listing describes St. Peter’s Basilica as free of charge, but it warns that access is not guaranteed and may vary due to crowd control. So a standard walk-in carries no ticket price for the church, yet the wait and the entry conditions can change on the day.

The same reviewer who arrived early gave a useful estimate of the time involved: for a free visit only, they said you can see most of it in about 40 minutes, and they suggested paying extra for the other locations. I treat that as one traveler’s experience, not a rule. A slow walk, a stop at the altars and a long security line will all stretch it.

If you want the full explanation, I answer the question in my page on whether St. Peter’s Basilica is free. The short version is that the church can be free, while the extras and the guided options are not. The dome, for example, is a separate visit that I cover on the page about St. Peter’s Basilica dome tickets.

Because the entry can change with crowd control, I would not build a tight schedule around it. Leave a buffer before your next timed slot, such as a museums entry later in the day.

Do Vatican Museums Tickets Include the Petersdom?

Vatican Museums tickets mostly do not include the Petersdom. The entry-ticket listing for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel leaves out a ticket to St. Peter’s Basilica, the dome and a guided tour, and it restates that the basilica is free but not guaranteed. It is the clearest example of a ticket name that sounds broader than it is.

Guided tours behave differently. Several listings include basilica access, but only when you select a specific option. If the Petersdom is a must-see for you, read the inclusions line before you pay. The table below summarizes five listings from the tour data.

Listing Price (USD) Length Petersdom status
Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 1 day Basilica excluded
Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica Tour (Enjoy Rome) $60.17 2 to 3 hours Skip-the-line access if option selected
Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica Tour (Crown Tours) $71.31 2 to 4 hours Entry with select options; dome by elevator optional
Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica Access (Real Barcelona Tours) $67.97 2.5 to 3 hours Optional direct entry
Museums and Sistine Chapel skip-the-line ticket (Tours And Tours) $32.31 1 day Basilica and dome excluded

Prices are the listed amounts in US dollars and change with date and option, so check the live page. If you want to compare every ticket type before you decide, you can use our main ticket comparison and then come back here for the basilica details.

I would book a soft combination only if you have the energy for it. A museums visit is long and tiring, and the Petersdom comes after a security check of its own. If your legs are the limit, split the two across different mornings.

Which Petersdom Tour Should You Choose?

A Petersdom tour with the basilica as an option is, for most visitors, the easiest way to see the church with context, while a museums-only ticket costs less if the church gets its own morning. The right pick depends on whether you want a guide, your budget and how much walking you can manage.

Guided tours with a basilica option. The Enjoy Rome listing at $60.17 lists a 2 to 3 hour walking tour with skip-the-line access to the museums and Sistine Chapel, and to the basilica if the option is selected. It names Michelangelo’s La Pietà at St. Peter’s Basilica as a highlight. The Crown Tours listing at $71.31 mentions the Pietà and Bernini’s Baldachin, and offers a self-guided dome visit by elevator with select options. Reviewers of the first tour praise knowledgeable guides and skipped lines, but several ask for clearer details about the basilica part.

Tickets with a host and no guide. The Real Barcelona Tours listing at $67.97 offers optional direct entry to the basilica to see the Pietà and the Baldachin, and its guests praise the guide but ask for clearer basilica coordination. That listing says the meeting point is an office, and that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point. Read that line twice, because the number one mistake is to walk to the square and wait for a guide who is elsewhere.

Museums-only tickets. The $36.21 listing and the $32.31 listing both leave the basilica out. They are the right pick if you plan to visit the church on its own schedule. A guest wrote this about the cheaper entry ticket:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

For a longer comparison of guided options focused on the church, my page on a St. Peter’s Basilica guided tour lists what to ask before you pay.

One guest on the Enjoy Rome tour noted a practical point about access:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

That family could not take the guided version because of a wheelchair, and did the visit on their own with an audio guide, still seeing most of the sights. If anyone in your group has limited mobility, tell the seller before booking, since listings differ on what they allow.

What Else Is Near the Petersdom?

Near the Petersdom you can walk to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the pizza places along Via delle Fornaci. Map data lists the museums and the Sistine Chapel at 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, and a pizza restaurant, Ristorante Pizzeria Castello, open 11 am to 11 pm every day.

That restaurant is rated 4.7 from 18,643 reviews and sits at Via delle Fornaci 27, outside the Vatican. Because it is in Rome, not in the state, you leave the Petersdom area to reach it, so factor in the walk and the security line if you plan to return to the church.

For a quick orientation, the three places above show how a day might flow: the basilica first, since it opens at 7 am, then the museums when they open at 8 am, and lunch afterward. The Sistine Chapel is part of the museums visit, and one Google Maps reviewer of the museums said tickets bought on the day involved a wait of 30 to 40 minutes at around 5 pm, and the galleries felt rushed before closing. That is one person’s account, but it supports booking ahead and not leaving the museums for late afternoon.

If you are interested in services, my page on Mass times at St. Peter’s Basilica explains what to check for religious services.

Students and Reduced Tickets

Reduced tickets for students are available for museums visitors aged 25 and under, who need a school or university document confirming enrolment for the current year. The rule comes from the Vatican Museums’ reduced ticket page for students.

The warning on that page is strict. A visitor who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must buy a new ticket at the full rate, the reduced ticket is cancelled, and a reduced ticket already booked or purchased cannot be refunded. This applies to museums tickets, not to a walk-in visit to the Petersdom, but it matters if your day includes both. Carry the student document with you and do not guess your eligibility.

Plan Your Petersdom Visit

Plan your Petersdom visit for first thing in the morning, confirm the hours on the official site and keep the museums for a separate slot. That gives the church your best energy and stops the security check from cutting into a timed ticket.

Here is the checklist I would follow:

  1. Use the right name. Petersdom, St. Peter’s Basilica and Basilica di San Pietro are the same church.
  2. Check hours on the day. The map listing shows 7 am to 7:10 pm daily, but services and ceremonies can change that.
  3. Arrive early. A traveler who reached the doors at 6:45 am still found a line, so allow for it.
  4. Read the inclusions. A museums ticket may leave out the basilica, and a tour may include it only as an option.
  5. Leave a buffer. Entry is described as not guaranteed, so do not stack a tight timed ticket right after.
  6. Carry student proof. It is required for any reduced museums ticket.

If you want help choosing between ticket types, start with the options on Vatican tickets and then compare the church-focused guides in the St. Peter’s Basilica hub. Whether you call it the Petersdom or St. Peter’s, a little planning on timing and inclusions makes the visit much smoother.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Petersdom the same as St. Peter's Basilica?

Yes. Petersdom is the German name for the church English speakers call St. Peter's Basilica, and it stands in Vatican City, which Wikipedia describes as a landlocked city-state enclosed by Rome. Maps, tours and official pages use the English, Italian or German name for the same building.

What are the Petersdom opening hours?

A map listing for Saint Peter's Basilica shows 7 am to 7:10 pm every day of the week, including Sunday. Hours can change with services and the season, so confirm them on the basilica's official website before you go.

Is the Petersdom free to enter?

A Vatican Museums entry-ticket listing describes the basilica as free of charge, but says access is not guaranteed and may vary due to crowd control. A reviewer who arrived at 6:45 am found a line but got in quickly.

Where is the Petersdom?

The map address is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano, Vatican City. That puts it at the edge of St. Peter's Square, inside a state of about 0.44 square kilometers.

Does the Vatican Museums ticket include the Petersdom?

Not by default. One standard museums ticket listing excludes the basilica ticket and the dome, while several guided tours list skip-the-line basilica access only with a selected option.
