Vatican City tours and tickets June 30 2019 is a search for a day that has already passed, so no booking can be made for it today. If you are trying to recover an old reservation, or you want to know what that Sunday looked like, this page explains it. If you are planning a real trip, the rules below still apply and the current options are laid out for you.

I’ll keep this practical. First I’ll cover how that particular Sunday worked, then what has changed, then which tickets and tours make sense now. Every figure here is the latest published as of November 2026, and I link each source so you can confirm it before you spend money.

Vatican City Tours and Tickets June 30 2019: What Happened That Sunday

Vatican City tours and tickets June 30 2019 fell on the last Sunday of June, the day after the feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29. Both facts matter, because the Vatican Museums run on a calendar with Sunday and feast-day exceptions.

On the official schedule, the Museums are closed on most Sundays. The exception is the last Sunday of the month, when they open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free. That exception does not apply when the Sunday coincides with Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

So a last Sunday in June is a free-entry day in principle. The page I am working from is the current schedule, and rules for a specific past year may have differed, so treat this as how the system works rather than a record of that exact day.

Vatican Museums Entry and Guided Tours on a Free Sunday

Vatican Museums free Sunday entry sounds like the best deal in Rome, yet it is also the busiest morning. The official schedule says guided tours are possible on those Sundays by reservation, which is the one way to add structure to a free day.

My advice is simple. If you want the free entry and can handle a crowd, go early and expect a long wait in line. If you would rather pay for a smoother visit, pick a weekday timed ticket instead and avoid the free Sunday crush.

Visitors must also leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time. On a 2:00 p.m. closing, that means you should be heading for the exit around 1:30 p.m., so a late arrival leaves very little real viewing time.

Were the Vatican Museums Open on June 30, 2019?

The Vatican Museums were open on June 30, 2019, in principle. They open on the last Sunday of the month unless it falls on one of the listed feast days, and June 30 is not one of them. The one date in June that always closes the Museums is 29 June.

That closure list is worth memorizing if you plan a trip around late June. The official page lists these closed days: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December, along with regular Sundays. Dates in the list are for 2026, and the Museums publish a separate openings and closures calendar for 2026-2027 that you should open before choosing a day.

Can You Buy Tickets for a Past Date Like June 30, 2019?

Tickets for a past date like June 30, 2019 cannot be booked, because each ticket is tied to a date and a time slot. If an old confirmation email brought you here, contact the company that issued it, because I cannot see or change anyone’s bookings.

If you want the same type of experience on a new date, the replacement is easy. You choose a date, pick a timed entry or a guided tour, and keep the voucher on your phone. For a plain comparison of what each ticket type includes, see every ticket type side by side on the main page.

For the cleanest route to a real booking, I would also read about buying official tickets directly so you know what the Museums sell themselves and what resellers add.

What Vatican Tickets and Tours Are Available Now?

Vatican tickets and tours available now come down to two broad choices: entry only, or entry with a guide. The table below uses the listed prices from the tours I reviewed. Prices are in US dollars as shown on the listings, and they can differ by date.

Option Listed price What you get Group size and length
Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 Skip-the-ticket-line entry, optional audio guide, booking fee Self-paced
Habemus Tours guided visit $65.91 Priority entry, assistance on arrival, guide if option selected 2.5 hours to 1 day
Towns of Italy tour $84.68 Skip-the-line ticket, licensed guide, headsets 3 to 3.5 hours, small-group option of 8
Gray Line I Love Rome tour $109.87 Entry, priority Sistine Chapel entrance, headsets 20 people maximum, 3 to 3.5 hours
Through Eternity tour with St. Peter’s $128.14 Museums plus Basilica fast-track entrance, guide Small group, 3 hours

If you only want to see the art at your own speed, the entrance ticket is my pick. If you want the story behind the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine ceiling, a guided slot earns its extra cost. I would book one of these Vatican tour tickets early in the week you travel, since popular slots sell out.

The tours above are affiliate links, and I never claim to be the official ticket office. I recommend them because the listings show clear inclusions and real review counts, not because they are the only way in.

What does the entrance-only ticket not include?

The entrance-only ticket leaves out a guided tour, the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, and a Basilica ticket. The listing notes that Basilica entry is free but not guaranteed, because crowd control can change access.

The meeting instructions are specific. You go directly to the Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, use the preferred GetYourGuide entrance, and show your ticket to security. You then scan it at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. Do not arrive outside your assigned time slot.

Is a Guided Tour Better Than a Ticket Only?

A guided tour suits most first-timers better, because the Museums are large and the best works are far apart. The reviews I found point the same way: one traveler wrote, as one visitor put it:

“Fantastic. Worth the money in skipping the queue. Valentina was a wonderful guide”
Stefanie, Australia, 2026-06 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Ticket-Line Tour

The price gap is real, though. Ticket-only entry is about $36, while the guided options start near $66. Whether that is worth it for guided tour tickets depends on how much context you want and how patient you are with crowds.

Here is how I decide. If you have visited before or you prefer reading placards, take the entrance ticket and an audio guide. If this is your first visit or you travel with teenagers, take a small group, because the Towns of Italy listing offers a maximum of 8 guests and the Through Eternity tour runs as a small group.

Guided tours of the Museums themselves are covered in more detail on the page for Vatican museum tour tickets. If your plans center on the whole city rather than one museum, the page on Vatican City tour tickets lines up the choices.

Is St. Peter’s Basilica Open and Free on a Sunday?

St. Peter’s Basilica is open every day, and entering is free of charge. The official site lists 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from June 1 to October 25, 2026, then 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from October 26, 2026 to March 28, 2027.

The official Basilica hours page also shows that guided visits run Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Sundays and Vatican holidays, guided visits run only from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., with last registration at 3:00 p.m. That is a big difference if your plan was a Sunday morning tour of the Basilica.

The dome has its own summer hours, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from 29 March to 25 October 2026. The Basilica also keeps a separate path for worshippers and celebrants, so if you are visiting for Mass, follow the staff to that entrance.

If you want to combine the Museums and the Basilica, the Through Eternity tour includes skip-the-line entry at St. Peter’s, though that is not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours ahead. Another option, the Towns of Italy listing, excludes a guide inside the Basilica.

  • Through Eternity Tours: the flower stand on the corner of Via Giulio Cesare and Via Leone IV.
  • Habemus Tours: the office at Via Del Mascherino 37/41, 30 minutes before departure.
  • Towns of Italy: Viale Vaticano 100, at the top of the stairs next to Caffè Vaticano.

Can You Join a Papal Audience on a Tour?

A papal audience tour is possible, since one listed tour reserves and collects the free audience ticket for you, then guides you through the security and crowds. It costs $41.23, runs 3.5 hours, and meets 15 minutes before 7:00 a.m. at the coffee shop in the middle of the square.

The inclusion note says the ticket is free except in August, when the Vatican does not print them. The tour excludes the Basilica and the Museums, so it is a separate morning from any gallery visit. Travelers say seating is open and that a close view is not guaranteed, which I think is fair to plan around.

Holidays and Closures to Check Around June 29 and 30

Vatican holidays and closures include the feast of Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, a public holiday, according to the Vatican holiday list for 2026 and 2027. It also closes the Museums, which matters most when you plan a trip around late June.

The same list shows other dates to watch: 15 August for the Assumption, 8 December for the Immaculate Conception, and 25 and 26 December. Italy has its own holidays too, such as 2 June for Republic Day. Since these change the crowd pattern, I would check the official calendar before choosing any day.

Temporary closures also appear on the schedule, such as a morning closure of all sectors on 10 November or evening closures of the Sistine Chapel on 4 and 18 December. These can catch you off guard, so read the page the week you book.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows a few facts that explain why a visit takes planning. The figures below come from Wikidata, and I added a line on what each means for you.

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you want to see sits inside a very small footprint, though the Museums are a long walk inside it.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. The Lateran Treaty created the modern state, as described on Wikipedia.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which is why entry is controlled and timed.
  • Population: 949 (2024), so the visitors far outnumber residents on a busy day.
  • Currency: the euro, so cards and euro cash both work at official counters.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin; staff speak English at the main desks.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00, so set your clock before a 7:00 a.m. meeting.

Planning a Late-June Visit: Weather, Money and Timing

A late-June visit to Vatican City means hot, bright weather. According to Open-Meteo, the 2016-2025 average June high is 29.5°C (about 85°F), the average low is 17.9°C, with 43 mm of rain and about 13.3 hours of sun per day. July is hotter, with an average high of 32.9°C.

That means you should book the earliest slot you can, bring water, and cover your shoulders and knees. Outdoor queues in midday sun are the main discomfort. A morning slot also puts you inside the galleries before the heat peaks.

For money, the official Castel Gandolfo reduced ticket is listed at 6.00 euros, about $6.70 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06, per the European Central Bank rates. The school-group reduced ticket is 5.00 euros, about $5.58. Those are for a different site, but they show that official prices are quoted in euros and that your dollar cost moves with the rate.

If a seller offers an unusually low price or an unclear voucher, stop and read whether a reseller is legit before paying. Hold on to the confirmation, and know that one reviewer called the entrance ticket good value:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”

Your Next Step After Vatican City Tours and Tickets June 30 2019

Vatican City tours and tickets June 30 2019 cannot be booked, but you can book the same visit for a date ahead. Start with the official Museums schedule, pick a day that is not a closure, and decide between entry only and a guided slot.

For a broader view of what each pass includes, read the guide to Vatican Museum tickets, browse the Vatican tickets hub, or book Vatican tickets online from the main comparison page. If you want my one-line rule: choose a weekday morning, take a small group if it is your first visit, and confirm every price on the official site before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Are the Vatican Museums free on the last Sunday of the month?

Yes. According to the official Vatican Museums schedule, entry is free on the last Sunday of each month, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. The exception is when that Sunday falls on Easter, 29 June, 25 or 26 December, or 31 December.

Can I get Vatican tickets without a tour?

Yes. A timed entrance ticket for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel does not include a guide, and one listed option offers an optional audio guide instead. St. Peter's Basilica has its own entrance and is not covered by that ticket.

How much is a guided Vatican tour compared with a ticket only?

Among the options in my research, a ticket-only entry is listed at $36.21, while guided tours run from $65.91 to $128.14. Prices change by date and group size, so check the live listing before you book.

Is the papal audience ticket free?

The audience ticket is free, and one listed tour reserves and collects it for you, except in August when the Vatican does not print them. That tour meets 15 minutes before 7:00 a.m., and latecomers miss it.

What time does St. Peter's Basilica open in summer?

The official Basilica site lists 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from June 1 to October 25, 2026. The dome follows a summer schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
