Is the Sistine Chapel closed?

By Updated 11 min read

Is the Sistine Chapel closed? It is closed every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month and on a short list of holidays, and it is open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with final entry at 6:00 p.m.

Is the Sistine Chapel closed? Only on certain days, and the pattern is easy to learn. The chapel is part of the Vatican Museums route, so it is shut on ordinary Sundays and on a short list of holidays, and open the rest of the week. I will walk you through the exact days, the hours, the partial closures on the calendar right now and the quickest way to confirm your date.

Is the Sistine Chapel Closed on Sundays?

The Sistine Chapel is closed on Sundays, with a single exception: the last Sunday of each month. On that day the Vatican Museums, and the chapel with them, open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with free entry, according to the official opening times page.

The exception has its own exceptions. The official page says the free Sunday does not happen if it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December. In those months the chapel simply stays closed all Sunday.

Google Maps also shows the chapel as closed on Sundays, which matches the official rule. If your trip only has a Sunday free, my advice is to build the Vatican day around another day. If you can’t, check whether it is the last Sunday of the month and book a slot early.

Sistine Chapel Opening Days and Hours Explained

Sistine Chapel opening days run Monday to Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. The Vatican Museums publish those times on their days and hours of closure page, and the chapel has no separate schedule. You reach it through the Museums, and the entry ticket covers both on the day it is issued, per the official prices and tickets page.

Last Sunday of the month 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (free entry) 12:30 p.m.
Other Sundays Closed None
Listed holidays Closed None

Notice the last line of the hours rule: visitors are asked to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time. On a regular day that means you should be moving toward the exit by 7:30 p.m. Final entry at 6:00 p.m. gives you a window of about an hour and a half, and I would not use it on purpose.

One traveler described what a late arrival feels like:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

My advice is to enter well before the final slot. The chapel sits deep in the route, and a rushed visit is a poor way to see Michelangelo’s ceiling.

Sistine Chapel Closing Days: Which Holidays Is It Closed?

Sistine Chapel closing days are the annual closures listed by the Vatican Museums: 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. The Sistine Chapel is closed on all of them, as the official closure list shows.

Most of those dates match Vatican public holidays. The Nager.Date holiday list for Vatican City includes Epiphany on 6 January, the anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City on 11 February, Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March, Saint Joseph the Worker on 1 May, Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June, Assumption Day on 15 August, All Saints Day on 1 November, the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day.

Two details deserve care. First, 6 April on the 2026 list lines up with Easter Monday, which moves every year; the same holiday list puts Easter Monday on 29 March in 2027. Second, the official page links a museum calendar for 2026 to 2027. I would always open that openings and closures calendar rather than trust a date I read elsewhere, including this page.

If your trip falls around Christmas, the closures on 25 and 26 December come right after the 8 December closure. A December trip needs a bit more planning than a trip in other months.

Is the Sistine Chapel Closed for Part of a Day?

The Sistine Chapel is closed for part of a day on occasion. The official page has a table of temporary and extraordinary closures, and the Sistine Chapel appears in it. As of November 2026 it lists the chapel closing from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 4 December and again on 18 December, with last entrance at 5:30 p.m. on those dates.

Other sectors close too, and I mention them so you can read the table with confidence. The page lists the Vatican Museums as a whole closed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November, and other sectors, like the New Wing and the Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi, with their own periods. A partial closure of one sector does not close the chapel unless the chapel is the sector named.

My practical rule: if your slot is late in the day, check that table before you pay. An evening partial closure on your date can cost you the very room you came for. A morning slot avoids that problem completely.

The chapel is also the place where a new pope is chosen. Wikipedia describes it as the site of the papal conclave, and I would expect any closure linked to church business to appear on the official calendar first.

How to Check if the Sistine Chapel Is Closed Before You Go

To check if the Sistine Chapel is closed, use the Vatican Museums’ own pages, since they are the only authority on closures. Open the days and hours page for the regular rules and the temporary closures table, then the PDF calendar for the year.

Here is the order I recommend:

  1. Look at the weekday. If it is a Sunday, stop and see whether it is the last Sunday of the month.
  2. Compare your date with the annual closure list.
  3. Read the temporary closures table for your date and your time slot.
  4. Confirm your time before you pay.

Be careful where you buy. The official page warns that the only official site for online tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va, and it warns about look-alike sites that can charge far more. Tickets are also not refundable, which is why checking the date first matters.

If you are still deciding which ticket suits your dates, I compare every option on the Vatican tickets guide. For how the chapel fits in the wider visit, the page on the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel explains the whole route.

What Does a Ticket Cost If You Plan Around Closures?

A Sistine Chapel ticket costs EUR 20 at full price on the official site without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. The reduced ticket is EUR 10, about $11, or EUR 10 plus EUR 5 for the skip-the-line booking, about $17. The ticket is valid only on the day it is issued.

I do not have the full-price figure for the online skip-the-line booking, so confirm it on the official prices and tickets page. Prices and hours change, and that page is the one to trust.

The free routes matter if you are choosing a day. Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, for children under 7, and for visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, per the same page. Free tickets for disabled visitors and their companions are not booked online but issued at the desks in the entrance hall.

For anyone who wants a guaranteed slot on a normal weekday, the paid options below add a timed skip-the-line entrance. If you are weighing the cost of a ticket against a day you can’t change, you can also read how to buy Sistine Chapel tickets in detail.

I would pick the timed-entry ticket if your dates are fixed. It turns “open on paper” into a slot you actually hold. Remember, though, that a ticket does not reopen a closed chapel, so check the date first.

What If the Sistine Chapel Is Closed on Your Dates?

If the Sistine Chapel is closed on your dates, move the Vatican day. It is the cheapest fix, and the chapel is open six days a week. If you can shift by one day, do it before you buy anything non-refundable.

If you can’t move the day, you have three choices:

  • Go on the last Sunday of the month. Entry is free from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the official page says guided tours are possible by reservation.
  • Aim for a morning slot. Late-day partial closures, like the December evening closures, never touch it.
  • Spend the closed day outside the Museums. St. Peter’s Basilica is open on Sundays; Google Maps lists it from 7 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. every day. Opening times can change on church occasions, so check the basilica’s own site before you go.

Many travelers confuse the two sites. The Sistine Chapel is in the Vatican Museums, while St. Peter’s is a separate basilica with its own entrance. A closed chapel does not close the basilica, and the reverse is also true.

Sistine Chapel Closure Facts and Figures

Sistine Chapel closure facts start with the room itself, since a closure shuts one space, so the numbers below help you picture what you are waiting to see. They come from Wikidata for the Sistine Chapel, the ceiling record and Vatican City.

  • 40.9 m long and 13.4 m wide: the whole space is one hall, so a closure always means the full room.
  • 21 m high: the ceiling is far above your head, which is why most people stand and look up for a long time.
  • Begun in 1473: commissioned by Sixtus IV, the chapel is more than 550 years old, so conservation and care are a real reason for scheduled work.
  • Ceiling dated 1508: Michelangelo’s fresco is the main reason the room draws crowds.
  • 0.44 km² for all of Vatican City: the state is tiny, so the chapel, Museums and basilica are close, and a closed one is easy to swap for another.

Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512, and The Last Judgment between 1535 and 1541, according to Wikipedia. I find it helpful to remember that these are fresco works in a working chapel, not a gallery wall, and that is one reason the opening rules are strict.

Is the Sistine Chapel Closed to Photography and Late Arrivals?

Late arrivals at the Sistine Chapel are the real issue. A tour operator’s meeting rule in my picks says it plainly: the ticket is valid only for the reserved time, and latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot.

I do not have an official rule on photography in the brief, so I will not state one here. Confirm it on the Museums’ site, and note that the guards in the chapel are the authority on the day.

Another reviewer gave the best timing tip I have seen, and it fits a day when you want fewer crowds:

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”
Kíke · Google Maps review about Sistine Chapel

I would not rely on afternoon quiet alone, since final entry is 6:00 p.m. A better plan is a morning slot early in the week. If you want a guide, the tour below keeps the visit short enough for a late slot, and you can read what each option includes before you choose.

Is the Sistine Chapel Closed? A Short Plan to Finish With

Whether the Sistine Chapel is closed on your date comes down to three checks: the weekday, the annual closure list and the temporary closures table. If all three are clear, the chapel is open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6:00 p.m. and an exit request 30 minutes before closing.

My plan for most visitors is simple. Pick a weekday morning, avoid the listed holidays, and keep the first slot of the day for the Museums. The Sistine Chapel topic hub gathers my other guides, and when you are ready to book, book Vatican tickets online from a source that matches the official rules. Never assume the chapel is open because a listing says so; confirm it on the official hours page, which is the only source I rely on for closures.

Frequently asked questions

At what time does the Sistine Chapel close?

The Sistine Chapel follows the Vatican Museums, which close at 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6:00 p.m. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so plan to be out by about 7:30 p.m.

Is the Vatican museum free?

Yes, on the last Sunday of each month, when entry is free from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. Children under 7 and some other groups also enter free, according to the official ticket page.

What days should I avoid the Vatican?

Avoid ordinary Sundays and the listed holiday closures, because the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are shut on them. The official site lists the dates, including 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December.

What does Sistine mean in Italian?

In Italian the chapel is called the Cappella Sistina. The name comes from Pope Sixtus IV, who had the old Cappella Magna rebuilt between 1473 and 1481.

Is 2 hours enough for the Vatican?

Two hours is the short end of what the listed visits allow. The skip-the-line tours in my picks run from 2 to 4 hours, so I would plan at least 2.5 to 3 hours if you want the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.
