Sistine Chapel Timings

By Updated 11 min read

Sistine Chapel timings follow the Vatican Museums: Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. The chapel is closed on most Sundays and on a short list of holidays, so check the official calendar before you pick a date.

Sistine Chapel timings are the same as the Vatican Museums timings, because the chapel is the last stop inside the museum route and has no separate ticket or door. The standard schedule is Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., according to the official opening days and times. That page also lists the Sundays and holidays when the doors stay shut.

I’ll walk you through the exact hours, the last-entry rule that catches people out, the closure dates, and the times of day I would choose. Everything here reflects the official schedule as published in November 2026, so confirm your date on the official site before you book.

Sistine Chapel Opening Hours at a Glance

Sistine Chapel opening hours follow the two regular schedules that the Vatican Museums publish, and the table below sets them side by side.

Day Opening hours Final entry Cost
Monday to Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Full ticket EUR 20
Last Sunday of the month 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 12:30 p.m. Free
Other Sundays Closed None None

One more rule matters. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time, so on a regular day you are asked to be out of the galleries around 7:30 p.m. The final-entry time and the leave-the-halls time are not the same thing, and I would not cut it close.

The ticket price is EUR 20 for a full ticket without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. The same official prices page says the ticket covers the museums and the chapel only on the day it is issued, and that tickets cannot be refunded.

The chapel sits at the end of the route. If you enter at 5:30 p.m., you will not have time to enjoy the earlier galleries and still reach Michelangelo’s ceiling before the halls empty. For that reason I treat 6:00 p.m. as a technical limit, not a plan.

Are Sistine Chapel Timings Different on Sunday?

Sistine Chapel timings on Sunday apply to just one day a month, the last Sunday, when the doors open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. On every other Sunday the museums and the chapel stay closed.

The last-Sunday opening is free, and the official page notes that guided tours can be reserved for that day. There are exceptions. The last Sunday does not open if it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June (Saints Peter and Paul), 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

I would be honest about the trade-off. Free entry is attractive, but the shorter five-hour window squeezes a whole day’s visitors into a tight space. If your trip lets you choose, a weekday is a calmer way to see the chapel. If the free Sunday is the only date that works, arrive early and read the official calendar first.

Is the Sistine Chapel Open on Saturday?

The Sistine Chapel is open on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., exactly the same schedule as Monday through Friday.

The official hours list no Saturday or Wednesday exceptions. Saturday does tend to attract visitors who work during the week, so I would pick an early slot and plan to be in the chapel before the midday rush. If you want help choosing between day-of-week options, the Sistine Chapel tickets page compares the ways to enter.

Which Days Is the Sistine Chapel Closed?

The Sistine Chapel is closed on every Sunday apart from the last one of the month, and on a fixed list of holidays. The museums’ own schedule gives these closure dates:

  • 1 and 6 January
  • 11 February
  • 19 March
  • 6 April
  • 1 May
  • 29 June
  • 14 and 15 August
  • 1 November
  • 8, 25 and 26 December

On top of those, the museums list short temporary closures. The Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 4 December and again on 18 December, with last entrance at 5:30 p.m. Every sector of the museums is closed from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November.

Those short closures are the kind of detail that ruins a late-afternoon plan. If your visit falls near a date above, I would book a morning slot and re-check the Vatican and Sistine Chapel planning notes before you travel. Closure lists change, so the official calendar always wins.

Sistine Chapel Visiting Times: When to Go

Sistine Chapel visiting times tend to be calmest in the first slots after opening and again in the late afternoon. One Google Maps reviewer advised going after 3 pm, when most cruise ship tours are over.

“If you can, you need to visit this place. The relics and treasures are just incredible. You definitely need more than one day to take it all in. The crowds are brutal so try and go after 3pm when most of the cruise ship tours are over.”
Kíke · Google Maps review about Sistine Chapel

I agree with the logic, with one warning. Late slots look appealing, but the 6:00 p.m. final entry and the 30-minute leave-the-halls rule mean you will be moving fast. Another traveler on Google Maps arrived near 5:00 p.m., waited 30 to 40 minutes for tickets, and called the walk through the galleries a rush.

Here is how I would rank the options:

  1. 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. You enter with the first group and have the most time. This is my top choice if you can be at the door on time.
  2. After 3:00 p.m. Fewer large groups, but you must keep an eye on the clock.
  3. The free last Sunday. The cost is zero and the window is short, so expect crowds.

If you want the exact route from the entrance to the chapel, the Rome Vatican Sistine Chapel guide covers what you pass along the way.

How Much Time Do You Need Inside?

The time you need inside the museums and the Sistine Chapel together is about two and a half to three hours at a steady pace. That fits the durations listed for the guided and entry-ticket options below, which range from about 2 hours up to 4 hours with the basilica.

The chapel itself is a single large room, and its size is worth knowing. The Wikidata record gives it as 40.9 m long and 13.4 m wide. You will spend less time in it than in the galleries leading there, so do not budget your whole afternoon for the room alone.

My rule is simple: count backward from the last-entry time. For a 6:00 p.m. entry, I would not expect to enjoy the visit unless I already have a plan for the shortest route.

Booking a Slot Inside the Timings

Booking a time slot is the surest way to protect your Sistine Chapel timings, since a reserved entry lets you bypass the ticket queue. The only official ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va, and the museums warn about look-alike sites that charge much higher prices.

Official reduced and student tickets are EUR 10 without online booking, or EUR 10 plus EUR 5 with the Skip the Line booking. That is about $11 and $17 in total at the ECB rate of 2026-11-06. If you want to compare every option in one place, see every ticket type side by side.

Resellers sell timed entry as well. The tours below are entry tickets without a guide, which suit you if you want to set your own pace.

These tickets are sold with a start time, and the rule is firm. One operator’s instructions tell visitors to arrive 15 minutes early and say latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access. Another says not to arrive outside your assigned slot. Treat your slot as a hard appointment.

Prefer context while you walk? A guide is worth it for a room this dense with history. The options below include a licensed guide and optional St. Peter’s Basilica access.

One traveler who could not take a group guide because of a wheelchair did the visit alone with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

Sistine Chapel by the Numbers

The Sistine Chapel by the numbers gives you a few facts to picture what you are rushing toward, drawn from Wikidata and the ceiling’s own record.

  • Length: 40.9 m. A long hall, so give yourself time to walk its full length.
  • Width: 13.4 m. Narrow for the crowd it holds, which is why the room feels packed.
  • Height: 21 m. Look up; the ceiling is the point.
  • Built: 1473 inception date. The chapel is named for Pope Sixtus IV, who commissioned it.
  • Ceiling begun: 1508. Michelangelo painted it in fresco.
  • Ceiling size: 4,093 cm by 1,341 cm. That is about 41 m by 13 m of painted surface.

According to Wikipedia, Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512 and it is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.

Why the Chapel Has No Separate Hours

The chapel has no separate hours, even though many searchers expect its own timetable, like a church with a Mass schedule. The reason is practical: the Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums route, and the official prices page says the museum ticket covers the museums and the chapel together on the day it is issued.

The chapel also keeps a working religious role. Wikipedia describes it as the place where a papal conclave is held to choose a new pope, and as the chapel of the Papal Chapel, one of the two bodies of the papal household. That is why the museums can add short closures to the chapel alone, such as the evening closures on 4 and 18 December, even when the rest of the museums stay open.

For you, this means two things. First, any date that closes the museums also closes the chapel. Second, a sector-specific closure can still hit you even on an ordinary weekday, so look at the temporary closures table on the official page rather than only the holiday list. I make this check the last thing I do before I confirm a booking, and again the evening before I travel.

Quick Planning Checklist

This quick planning checklist turns the timings into a plan:

  • Choose a day from Monday to Saturday unless the free last Sunday is your only option.
  • Open the official calendar and confirm that no closure falls on your date.
  • Pick an entry slot and arrive before it, because late arrivals can lose skip-the-line access.
  • Remember that you must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so do not rely on the final-entry time.
  • Keep the chapel for the end of the route, and keep time for it.

Getting There Before the Doors Open

Getting there before the doors open means heading for the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano. If you take Metro Line A, one operator says the Ottaviano stop is only a 10-minute walk from its office, so I would leave a buffer on top of that. Check the gate and queue name on your voucher, because some travelers report that clearer directions on the correct queue would help.

Once you are through security, the walk to the chapel is inside the museum route. For an overview of how the chapel fits into the Vatican, see this guide to the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City and the wider Sistine Chapel hub.

If you have energy afterward, St. Peter’s Basilica is listed on Google Maps with different hours (7 am to 7:10 pm daily), so check its official site before you plan it.

Plan Your Visit Around the Sistine Chapel Timings

Sistine Chapel timings are easiest to manage with four habits, in my experience. Pick a Monday to Saturday date, aim for an opening or late-afternoon slot, count back from the 6:00 p.m. final entry, and check the closure list before you buy anything.

Book a timed ticket through the official site or a reseller, arrive early for your slot, and keep the confirmation handy. For the full picture of how the chapel and the museums fit together, my Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel guide is the best next read.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go into Vatican City on a Sunday?

The Vatican Museums, which include the Sistine Chapel, are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of each month. On that day they open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m. St. Peter's Basilica is listed on Google Maps as open every day, but confirm on its official site.

Is the Vatican museum free?

Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the official opening calendar. Children below age 7 and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% also enter free. Everyone else pays a full ticket of EUR 20 without online booking.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid planning around Sundays and the listed holiday closures, because the museums and the chapel are shut on those dates. The free last Sunday is open but is likely to be the busiest day, so I would skip it if you want space to look up. Weekday mornings and late afternoons are my picks.

How do I get to the Vatican museum?

The entrance is on Viale Vaticano. If you take Metro Line A, the Ottaviano stop is about a 10-minute walk from the meeting points several tour operators use. Allow extra time so you arrive before your reserved slot.

Keep planning your visit
