Not Being Able to Buy Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tickets

By Updated 13 min read

Not being able to buy Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets usually comes down to a closed date, a time slot that has not opened or filled up, or a look-alike website instead of the official portal. Check the official closure calendar, try neighboring dates, and book a skip-the-line ticket from a reseller if the official slots are gone.

Not being able to buy Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets is almost always a date, timing or website problem, not a sign that the Museums are fully shut. I see the same few causes again and again, and each one has a quick fix. This page walks through them in the order you are likely to hit them, then gives you a backup plan so your trip is not lost.

The Sistine Chapel is not sold on its own. It sits at the end of the Vatican Museums route, so every fix below is really about getting a Museums ticket.

Why Can’t You Buy Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tickets Online?

Buying Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets online fails when the date you picked is closed, the slots for that day are gone, or you are not on the official portal. Work through those three checks first, in that order, because the first one takes thirty seconds.

Start with the date. The Museums close on every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month, and they also close on a list of holidays that I cover below. If your calendar shows nothing bookable, you may simply be clicking a closed day.

Next, look at the time of day. The official hours are Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m., according to the official opening hours page. A late slot in the evening will not exist, even if the day is open.

Finally, check the address bar. The Vatican Museums say the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va. If you are somewhere else, you are on a reseller or a copycat, and the next section matters.

A quick checklist before you give up

  • Is the date a Sunday that is not the last Sunday of the month?
  • Is the date on the closure list?
  • Did you try a different day, even by one?
  • Did you try a different time slot, earlier in the morning?
  • Are you on the official domain?

This quick checklist should catch most blockers, and if every answer is “no problem here,” the slots for that day have likely sold out. That is when the backup options near the end of this page become useful.

Is the Official Website the Only Safe Place to Buy?

The official website is the only site the Vatican Museums themselves name as official for online tickets. Their prices and tickets page warns that websites with similar domains may charge significantly higher prices, so always confirm you are on the real portal.

This does not mean every other seller is a scam. Licensed resellers sell skip-the-line entry with a service fee, and I explain how to read those listings in the booking section. The danger is a site that pretends to be the Museums. If the page looks official but the domain is not the one above, close it.

There is another trap worth knowing about. On November 5, 2026, the Governorate of Vatican City State published a notice that a traveling photographic show called “Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition” was not authorized, endorsed or supported by its Directorate of Museums and Cultural Heritage. The notice names stops in Columbus, South Jersey and Las Vegas. If you see “Sistine Chapel tickets” for one of those cities, you are buying a photo exhibition, not entry to the real chapel in Vatican City.

For a side-by-side view of the real options, where to buy Vatican tickets? is the page I would open next.

Are the Vatican Museums Closed on Your Date?

Vatican Museums closures fall on Sundays (except the last Sunday of the month) and on a fixed list of holidays. A closed day is the most common reason a calendar looks empty, so check this before anything else.

According to the official hours page, the closures are:

  • January 1 and 6
  • February 11
  • March 19
  • April 6
  • May 1
  • June 29 (Saints Peter and Paul)
  • August 14 and 15
  • November 1
  • December 8, 25 and 26

The same page lists some short closures coming up. All sectors close on November 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The Sistine Chapel closes from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on December 4 and December 18, with last entrance at 5:30 p.m. Plan around those, and use the official openings and closures calendar for 2026-2027 for the full year.

One more rule: on the last Sunday of the month, the Museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free. Free does not mean easy. I would not count on that day if you are short on time, because the whole month’s free-entry crowd lands in one morning. The exception is when that Sunday falls on Easter, June 29, December 25, 26 or 31, when the Museums stay closed.

What Do Official Tickets Cost When Booking Works?

Official Vatican tickets cost 20 euros for a full ticket without online booking and 10 euros for a reduced one, according to the official price page. Booking a skip-the-line slot online adds a fee on the official site.

At the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on November 6, 2026 (see the ECB reference rates), the figures convert roughly like this:

Official ticket Price in euros Approx. in USD
Full entry, no online booking 20.00 about $22.33
Reduced entry, no online booking 10.00 about $11.17
Reduced entry with Skip the Line booking 10.00 + 5.00 about $16.75
Students, no online booking 10.00 about $11.17
Schools, no online booking 5.00 about $5.58

The page also lists free entry for children below age 7 and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, who get priority skip-the-line entry. Their tickets cannot be booked online, but are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall. Prices change, so confirm them on the official page before you travel.

Can You Buy Sistine Chapel Tickets at the Door or on the Day?

Buying Sistine Chapel tickets at the door works if the Museums are open that day and you arrive before final entry at 6:00 p.m. The official page lists the full ticket at 20 euros without online booking, which is the walk-up price.

The catch is the wait. One reviewer wrote that getting tickets online was a nightmare, so they turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited 30 to 40 minutes at the ticket office. They also said the visit was a rush before closing.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That matches the official rule that visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time. If you buy at 5:30 p.m., you will have very little time in the galleries before you are asked to head out. My advice is to treat a door purchase as a morning plan or a last resort, not an afternoon plan.

Timing helps in both directions. Another traveler suggested going after 3 p.m., when most cruise-ship groups have left, while a skip-the-line reviewer warned that without a timed ticket you might add two to three hours of waiting.

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”

Does a Vatican Ticket Include the Sistine Chapel?

A Vatican ticket includes the Sistine Chapel, since the official site states that the entry ticket for the Vatican Museums entitles you to visit the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, solely on the day the ticket is issued. There is no ticket in the official price list for the chapel alone.

This is why searches for a standalone chapel ticket go nowhere. The chapel is a room on the Museums route, so you need a Museums ticket and then walk through the galleries to reach it. My separate page on Sistine Chapel tickets explains what to expect on that route.

Two other facts matter for your planning:

  • Tickets cannot be refunded. If you pick the wrong date, you lose the money.
  • A ticket is valid only on the day it is issued. You cannot save it for a later morning.

Because of the non-refundable rule, I always tell readers to check the closure list first, then pay. It prevents the most painful mistake.

Trouble Buying Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tickets: Your Backup Options

Backup options for Vatican tickets start with a skip-the-line ticket from a reseller, the most reliable choice when official slots are gone. These cost more than the official price because they include a booking fee, and some add an audio guide or an escort to the entrance.

I would choose a ticket based on what you need most. Here is how the options in this brief differ:

  • Lowest price, entry only: a basic skip-the-line ticket at about $32 to $36 gives timed entry and lets you explore on your own.
  • Entry with a host: the Touristation and Inside Out Italy options include a meeting point and an escort to the entrance, with the possibility of adding St. Peter’s Basilica access on one of them.
  • Entry with audio: the City Wonders ticket offers an optional audio guide app in seven languages.

The ticket “Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket” is rated 4.48 out of 5 across more than 160,000 reviews on GetYourGuide. It includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and an audio guide if selected. It excludes a guided tour and St. Peter’s Basilica dome access.

I recommend choosing a slot as early in the day as you can. That gives you time to reach the chapel at the end of the route before the evening wind-down.

Whichever you pick, arrive on time. The Tours And Tours listing says the ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers will not be guaranteed skip-the-line entry. That same listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes early at Via Germanico 8.

If your concern is that the line seems impossible, the page on how to buy official Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets helps you tell the safe sellers from the risky ones.

Should you book a guided tour instead?

A guided tour is worth booking if the entry-only slots are full, because guided tickets often sit in a separate inventory. The Gray Line I Love Rome tour runs about 3 to 3.5 hours with a maximum group of 20 people and includes the entrance ticket, priority entrance for the Sistine Chapel and headsets. It costs about $110, which is far above entry-only prices, so I would book it only if you want the guide anyway.

As one traveler put it after using a reseller ticket:

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”

Where Are the Entrances and Offices You Need?

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, while resellers use different meeting points nearby. Check your voucher carefully, because the meeting point depends on the product.

For example, the GetYourGuide entrance ticket sends you straight to the Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, where you show your voucher and then scan it at the CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI box office after the security check. City Wonders meets at the bottom of the steps next to Caffè Vaticano, at the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.

Using the right meeting point matters, because missing the assigned time slot is the second most common reason people get turned away after a closed date. The Museums and chapel are both open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday on the map listing, with Sunday closed in that listing. Remember the last-Sunday exception from the official page.

St. Peter’s Basilica is a different visit. It is free to enter, and several tour listings mention that access is not guaranteed because of crowd control. If you also want the basilica, plan it on a different part of the day.

Vatican and Sistine Chapel Ticket Troubles by the Numbers

Vatican and Sistine Chapel facts help you judge how much time and effort the visit deserves. Each figure comes from Wikidata, linked on the number.

  • Sistine Chapel length: 40.9 m. It is a long room, so plan time to walk and look up.
  • Sistine Chapel height: 21 m. The ceiling is far above you, which is why the Creation of Adam is easy to miss in a rush.
  • Chapel built: 1473, commissioned by Sixtus IV. This is the date the building began.
  • Michelangelo’s ceiling begun: 1508, in fresco. The ceiling is why most visitors want this ticket.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km². It is tiny, so one entrance can handle most of your day.
  • Vatican City population: 949 in 2024. The crowds are almost entirely visitors.

The Sistine Chapel entry on Wikipedia notes that the chapel is also where papal conclaves are held, which is why it can occasionally be affected by closures. Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512 for Pope Julius II.

“The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Italian: Soffitto della Cappella Sistina), painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

What Should You Do If Not Being Able to Buy Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tickets Still Blocks Your Plans?

If you still cannot buy tickets, switch dates, move to a reseller, or plan a walk-up visit on a quiet morning. Do these in that order, and do not pay on any site you are unsure about.

My plan, step by step:

  1. Check the official closure list and pick an open weekday.
  2. Try the official portal again for a nearby date and an earlier slot.
  3. If it is still full, book a skip-the-line reseller ticket for the same day.
  4. If you are already in Rome, go early to the ticket office and buy the 20 euro walk-up ticket.
  5. Keep the receipt, because official tickets cannot be refunded.

For a final look at ticket types and prices in one place, you can see every ticket type side by side on the main guide. If you want a wider look at the topic, the Vatican tickets hub collects the related pages. And if you were hoping to buy the moment you land, the page on where to buy Vatican museum and Sistine Chapel tickets shows the safest places.

I would not let one failed checkout end the trip. The Museums are open six days a week, and one open slot or one skip-the-line ticket is usually enough.

Prices, hours and closures can change, so always confirm them on the official Vatican Museums price page and the official opening hours page. These figures are the latest published as of November 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy Vatican tickets at the door?

Yes. The official price list shows a full ticket at the door for 20 euros without online booking, and one traveler's review describes arriving around 17:00 and waiting 30 to 40 minutes to buy. Expect long lines in busy periods, and remember that the last entry is at 6:00 p.m.

Does a Vatican ticket include the Sistine Chapel?

Yes. The official site says the Vatican Museums entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, but only on the day the ticket is issued. There is no separate Sistine Chapel-only ticket in the official price list.

Can you buy Sistine Chapel tickets on the day?

You can, if the Museums are open that day and you arrive before the final entry at 6:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Skip-the-line slots are often the first thing to run out, so the on-the-day ticket line is your fallback.

Is the Vatican website the only official place to buy tickets?

The Vatican Museums name tickets.museivaticani.va as the only official site for online tickets. They warn that look-alike domains may charge significantly higher prices.

Are Vatican tickets refundable if I buy the wrong date?

No. The Vatican Museums state that official tickets cannot be refunded. Double-check the date against the closure calendar before you pay.
